I meant to say "doesn't stuff like this normally happen," meaning players playing out a position because of a team's lack of depth or, like Bogaerts' case in the WBC, having too many players of a certain position on the team.

One cannot stop Mookie. One can only hope to contain him.

Him playing SS tells me they might be putting it out there for some team. I mean if a team thinks he can play SS then he is a pretty valuable prospect, not that I think he's not a valuable prospect but a SS with his a skill-set is a pretty damn good commodity. Nothing is lost in the mean time while he plays SS so not a lot of downside.
Perhaps I'm reading too much into this.

I think we'll have a better understandings of Boston's approach with Betts in the AFL once he's played a good number of games. One inning as a defensive replacement at short isn't very telling, obviously.
If he plays a few more games at short, then you're assessment might be more justifiable, pedroelgrande. I wouldn't be surprised if he plays at different positions, including the outfield, though.
I'm keeping track of what positions each Red Sox prospect plays in the AFL, so be on the look out come November.

Cant believe how fast Betts has turned into what he's become.

Is there a website or spanish language station that airs any winter league games? Most interested in watching Dominican Winter League.
Also, is Manuel Margot on a winter league roster? Don't see him listed on the Fall/Winter post, but surprised he didn't sign on anywhere post instructs.

Don't see him listed on the Fall/Winter post, but surprised he didn't sign on anywhere post instructs. Players aren't eligible for the DWL draft until they reach full season ball. He'll get drafted next year for sure, and likely pretty high. Question then becomes if he's good enough to play - you'll notice nobody in the DWL from the Sox is below Salem, and that nobody below Triple-A is getting regular playing time. I guess they could have sent him to the Liga Paralela, but that's probably beneath him at this point.

I was wondering what other positions Cecchini & Betts could play? They are both very athletic & would be nice to keep both.

Mookie rips a hard liner to LF for an out. Showed off his very good bat speed and quick wrists in that at bat. Hit the ball hard.

Mookie with a frozen rope right to the left fielder. Damn I'm watching this over my Pitt Panthers (partially because they suck), but more due to the baseball hangover I'm still experiencing. How many days till pitchers and catcher report?

Quick, quick bat on Betts! Rocket right at the left fielder.

Cecchini just took a middle-middle fastball out. Still didn't look like a swing that'd generate a ton of power in the bigs.

I have been trying to come up with a MLB player comp for Garin Cecchini all season and it's been hard. But, I think I finally have one.. Matt Carpenter. I think Cecchini will be that type of player in the pros. Not a ton of power, but sound approach, always a tough out, sprays the ball to all fields and can work a walk. I have been bullish on Cecchini for a long time now, I just think he has all the tools + intangibles that make for a long successful MLB career.

I'm not a real believer in the idea that any player compares closely to any other. In this case, while the numbers in the minors aren't too far apart, the years are. Carpenter's buzz really only started in the last two years. The guy is already 27 so those numbers reflected a player who was quite age-advanced for the leagues he played in. He's the product of a farm system which likes to highlight the fact that it shoehorn's players into doing it their "way". Getting that down can take a while, apparently. By contrast, Cecchini won't be 23 till next season, and he'll already be in AAA. Like a few others on the board, I think he has a better than even chance of developing some power, perhaps enough to hit 20 home runs or so in an average year, maybe a bit more at his peak. They aren't built the same, either. Not that it means all that much. Ryan Sweeney looked like he should be able to hit the ball a mile, but the bat came across like David Eckstein's:

Disgusted.. fell asleep around the 4th inning. Got to see betts hit a smoking liner to left and hoped it would hit the gap, but was almost directly to the left fielder.
Mesa is on MLB Tuesday at 9pm Eastern think it is. Will correct this and make a new post once verify later on for all interested parties.
