One of the more interesting AFL rosters in recent history, I think. All guys who have a legitimate shot of sniffing the majors in the next year or two (OK, maybe Gibson is more of a long shot).

Apparently it will be a loaded AFL. Buxton, Baez, Bryant, Soler, Russell are on rosters.

Not to mention Colin Moran, Austin Hedges, and Corey Seager. I will be out there the first week of November, was planning on just following the Surprise team, but I may have to jump around some.

and is it just me or is the pitching relatively shallow? There are some decent arms, I kinda expected a Jonathan Gray to go to because he might have a shot at an opening day roster for the Rockies next year.

Alex Speier ?@alexspeier 24m Sox also have a TBA infield spot on AFL roster. Likely Sean Coyle, who needs ABs after missing 2 months, if he's healthy enough to play

Hopefully Cechini can continue his progress vs LHP out there. He has an ops over .800 vs them in AA. I know its a small sample though.

Generally more of a need to get guys at-bats than innings. There was a bumper crop of pitching in 2011 I think, but that was an exception. Also, one of the more predictable sets of guys they've sent, I think.

One of the more interesting AFL rosters in recent history, I think. All guys who have a legitimate shot of sniffing the majors in the next year or two (OK, maybe Gibson is more of a long shot). Gibson's a tease. I don't think I'm paying extra attention to him, and yet once or twice a year I notice something like him hitting .343 / .425 / .486 over 11 games, as he did from July 26 to August 9. Of course, he then hit .139 / .244 / .139 in his next 11 (which consisted of a 3/5, BB game, a 2/3, BB, HBP game, and 0/28, 2 BB in the others). And is currently 4 for his last 7, BB. Again, I don't think I've singled him out: in this case, it was his BA in the box scores going from .236, the neighborhood it had been in all year, to .255, that grabbed my attention. That doesn't seem to be happening for the other failed prospects. So, do we sense a flicker of hope here? Not quite -- but I do think it's a pilot light.

When we drafted Gibson I had high hopes for him. I love fast guys at SS, as the range should be above average, but he has never really produced. And I don't quite understand why. Sometimes I think it is just eyesight or something we can do little about like that.
I hope they give Coyle a shot. He could benefit from it a lot.

Well, if my main man Couch is pitching in this thing it will make me miss ML baseball a little less.

I'm going to go with "hitting is very difficult" for why he has never produced. As for Coyle, it does look like he may have tweaked something after all, as he has not played since Monday. I wonder if he wouldn't be better served by getting healthy, and I wonder if Betts would be the one to take his place. Other option would be Marrero.

Ruiz had a balk as well. He had a rough AFL season debut. Pena threw 28 pitches, 19 for strikes. Of those 28, 21 (!) were fastballs which sat 89-91 (per MLB gameday -- man I wish they had pitch FX for the minors). He had one swing and miss, but he was pounding the inside against lefties and outside against righites with regularity. Here's the pitch location from his lone strikeout (I trust MLB Gameday, it's usually solid -- at least more so than MiLB Gameday): Also from Gameday, re: Betts at short: Not particularly positive news, but -- to be fair -- he hasn't played short since 2012 when he was in Lowell (and we didn't see the plays). My goal is to provide updates of the AFL on Twitter. They're usually on when I'm on break from school, hence why I was able to follow today's game closely.

Do we have any details about Betts at SS. Im assuming it was a planned switch but wanted to rule out him being thrown in as an injury replacement as a stop gap.

He replaced Jonathan Schoop, and there's no news on Schoop being injured yesterday. I'm certain Orioles outlets would be all over a Schoop injury. It seems like a planned switch. We'll see moving forward how much playing time he gets outside of second.

Worth noting that Betts didn't quite light the world on fire after entering. There were 2 infield singles to short after he entered (not necessarily meaningful) and he made a throwing error. Tough to take much from that without context, admittedly.

Doesn't stuff normally happen in the AFL? Like you said, it's not necessarily meaningful. Schoop did suffer an injury in September, so I'd assume he can't go all nine yet. This is why I should defer to you, Chris.

Gibson is only on the taxi squad. He'll only play on Wednesdays and Saturdays. As for today, Travis Shaw went deep. Ramirez faced the minimum, giving up a single but erasing him on a GIDP. I'd missed Keith Couch pitching out of the bullpen yesterday. I'd assumed he was going to start. Wonder if the Sox are going to transition him to a true bullpen role - even early in the year this year when he was pitching in relief, he was mostly piggybacking, or at least in long relief.
