How about we look at picking up a speedy right handed, plus-defensive outfielder (that is consistently healthy)? Doesn't even need to have a good bat. That to me would be more helpful than Carp, even though I love the guy. We could use that in late innings or to rest victorino/play him in right when Shane is injured. This goes back to my November/December arguments about going after a guy like Bourjos or Rajei Davis. *sigh* This really had to be seen as a likely issue ahead of time. This "we just won the WS with Nava in RF" crap is just plain crap. Especially when you consider the likelihood of Nava regressing at the plate. The .364 BABIP vs RHP last season is due to fall. This all goes to my overarching off-season point/edict for every off season: If you did not get better you got worse. This team got worse. I am not saying they became the Mets, and people will point to the pythag saying they had some room to get worse. Regardless, OF was an off season weak spot and continues to be so now with the loss of Ells, Vitorino's injury history, expected decline (whatever it is decline IS expected) in Nava/Gomes, Bradley's uncertain offense, and very little help in AAA. This was among the biggest off season concerns - and if anyone says "Grady Sizemore" I would submit that they entered into that deal thinking it was a big if "Rocco Baldelli-type signing. Lottery ticket at best. For now the numbers look like they're coming in, but it's very early (and like every Sox fan I also hope this is the PowerBall jackpot). Catcher was another point of concern - and really, if you were willing to settle for a projected .280ish OBP at the position why not just go with Vazquez or Butler and get the plus D and spend that money elsewhere? - and the pen. They did spend in the pen. Everything else was left more or less static or "according to plan" with a level of "acceptable" decline and uncertainty built-in (i.e. Starting Pitching Staff, uncertainty of Middlebrooks-Xander defensively, Middlebrooks/Bradley offensively). Personally, I think the team knew it and gambled (not knowing Dempster would opt out) looking at this year with a bit of a "World Series Mulligan." It will be interesting to see how they proceed as the season unfolds. Lots of moving parts to consider, not the least of which will be Lester's contract status, the health of Victorino, Sizemore, Papi, Middlebrooks, and Buchholz all affecting moves (or non-moves). They didn't really get better, save for the pen (maybe - Mujica was the big pick-up there). Some other teams did. It will be interesting to see if such measured decline/maybe adjust before the deadline gamble pays off.

Jake Peavy pitched so well in this game. Come on, let's score more runs to get safe win! No more GIDP, please.

Not sure what you mean by "maybe not". I don't think that article has Sizemore in CF and JBJ in LF. There are no quotes that specify that. That would be unbelievably stupid especially in Fenway. My Bad - wrong link: “They definitely wanted to develop Jackie Bradley Jr. and they believe he is, if not the best defensive center fielder in the American League, they think he could be,”? Olney said. “They want to get him established. Shane Victorino, has probably played right field better than any Red Sox player since Dwight Evans. Then you put Grady in left and you potentially have a shutdown outfield. I think the biggest question at that time was of course whether Grady was going to hold up, and I think that’??s going to be a question all season.”

Does it concern anyone else that Pedroia and Nava have one walk between them this year? When was the last time Pedroia went 8 1/2 games without a walk?

One more inning for Peavy then, Taz and Uehara for close out if the score still 1-0. No Andrew Miller, please!

That was an incredibly slow trot to 2nd base. Come on Papi, this is a one-run game...

I'm watching from Gameday @ work. I wanted to know why they cannot hit Ross with 50/50 as strike/ball counts. The whole team is having trouble hitting.

Hey, he is Big Papi, also dealing with some calf issues. Also age and weight. Besides he never was going to make a triple.

Or hitting into 6 double plays in 11 innings. Seriously, what is the Red Sox GB% with runners on 1st and less than 2 outs? This has to normalize at some point, right? Stealing or bunting is an option. Especially when your batter is a double play machine. Swinging away is a good idea with Nap or Ortiz but with Roberts at the plate you gotta be realistic about the chances of a hit vs DP. This is the definition of cutting off your nose to spite your face. Relax, weird stuff happens in small samples, no need to overreact.

We need to get use to it for awhile, while they sort out the outfield situation, X-Man gets more experience and reps, and Papi and Dustin find their bats. ( Dustin had some swing and miss ks on balls outside of late). Haven't too good a feeling about catching right now either. Don't forget they are not playing now with Ellsbury, Shane, Drew, and even Salty. Instead going with youth, including some in the wings ( catching).

No way that would have hit him if he wasn't swinging.

What? The line up couldn't get more than one run by 6 walks issued from Ross and got only 2 hits off him. Both Lester & Peavy couldn't even get win with lack of run support from the RS hitters so far.

Nava making a run at the sombrero de oro. Have I mentioned that I hate it when he starts vs. LHP?

Is JBJ pushing Pedroia for the smartest player on the team yet?
Yeah, I am aware of Breslow's background. It's a joke. JBJ keeps making great decisions. Playing winning baseball.

Farrell pinch hitting a catcher in the 8th inning? Seems like a desperation move by his standards.
