Russell Carlton at BP has written a lot about how teams should spend more money on higher salaries and benefits for minor league players. He has another article out today on the subject, though it's subscription-only. I'll drop a few interesting tidbits. $4m a year is a good chunk of change, even for a deep-pocketed organization like the Red Sox. But with a flood of new TV money and increasing restrictions on where teams can spend, investing that money in the development of your minor leaguers seems like a pretty good bet.

So what are the odds there is a Barret Loux type thing with Aiken and he becomes a free agent? I know he has a fallback option of attending school where Loux didn't, but that would certainly be an interesting turn of events.

This is blowing up all over tweeter world.
Callis thinks he'd get $25m+ as a free agent.
Somewhere in the back of my brain, I'm thinking Aiken's father is a lawyer. I'm also thinking that if the Astro's don't sign Aiken that there was another signing that would then be in jeopardy because of cap limits.

Has there been any fallout for the Phillies in this draft because of the crap they pulled last year? I haven't seen any stories.

Has there been any fallout for the Phillies in this draft because of the crap they pulled last year? I haven't seen any stories. Actually the fallout was the other way. The guy they charged dropped in this year's draft, supposedly because he reneged on the draft agreement last year with the Phillies.

Also don't forget, it was the Astro's who blew it with offering a minor league player (Springer) a major league contract and were going to have a player's union grievance filed if they didn't call him up before service and super two time. The Pirates, on the other hand, did it properly with Polanco and successfully brought him up after super two day. . . . Jim Callis ?@jimcallismlb 51m Unless Aiken signs for $5 mil or less well in advance of deadline, highly unlikely enough time for @astros to sign Mac Marshall. @mlbdraft . . . Aaron Fitt ?@aaronfitt 2h Good rundown by @ken_Rosenthal on the latest in the Brady Aiken saga. The Aiken & Nix camps sound quite displeased: msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/casey-close-calls-foul-on-astros-and-mlb-in-negotiations-with-no-1-draft-pick-brady-aiken-071414 …

He either goes to UCLA and gets drafted in three years or can go to a JuCo and reenter next year. I'd guess he does the latter. No reason to risk blowing your arm out for longer than necessary if you literally can't even improve your draft position.

Astro's offered 40% of slot value, Casey Close said that was the only offer they received. So (I believe) that is why he would not become a free agent.

My question is not if he is eligible or not, it is why is he not eligible. He is not eligible because they offered him 40%. IE if they did not offer him 40% he would become a free agent.

No. There is no scenario in which he becomes a free agent. Even if they offer him less than 40 percent. He either signs or he goes to college (either UCLA or JuCo). Under no circumstances will he become a free agent.

Maybe Houston can draft him again next year. What the hell is wrong with them? This is where the draft just sucks sometimes. They are screwing him over.

As stated before he did get a 40% offer so he still will not become a free agent, but....

Imagine if Boras was his agent. He'd probably start a new league. Close is an under the radar guy, so if he spoke out before the deadline I couldn't imagine what Boras would be doing right now.
