I'd rather acquire another lefty reliever before they attempt to screw up Johnson even more by throwing him in the bullpen. Throwing him in the bullpen is a horrible idea after everything he's recently been through. I'd rather see him compete for a job in the rotation this year or next year if he doesn't feel comfortable with that idea. I love how fans can just throw ideas around with forgetting what just happened a month ago with Johnson. What the carjacking stuff? Thats why he is having anxiety?

It's pretty tough to attribute the liner to the head to him starting. What exactly is your point? That the liner to his head is the reason he averages a little over 100 innings a year for the last 4 years? You said a move to the bullpen would help keep him healthy for an entire year. Anxiety and a line drive off the head aren't due to being a SP. I'm just saying if you are moving him to the bullpen, that shouldn't be your reasoning. Also, having only seen televised games of his, I may be misinformed, but I thought the scouting on him suggested that he could be a back of the rotation innings eater. Yes, staying healthy is part of that, but I'm not ready to say that he still can't achieve that potential. Moving him to the bullpen would signal the end of those hopes.

No the anxiety is what I'm pointing to. Fans just want to throw Johnson into high leverage situations without taking his anxiety into account. That's the worst possible situation for him this year imo. Keep him at starter.

I wish him well but that is something a ton of people deal with, they get some meds and help and move on with life. You make it sound like he lost a child or something along those lines. Per Globe article dwelling on past and up coming starts was a big part of his problem. So pitching more often might help him, not hurt him. Please explain how he is going to compete for rotation spot this year? That's very funny. Even next year I don't think he will be able to compete for a rotation spot. His only chance next year at starting is if someone gets injured.

No one wants to make him a closer, taking Layne innings is not putting him in high leverage situations. You want him starting in majors, that would put a ton more pressure on him than a relief role .

Per the Globe article starting very well could have been an issue with Anxiety, as he was dwelling on bad starts and mistakes, while worrying about up coming starts. In a relief role he would have less time between games he pitches in, it could very well help him.

You've been warned about this kind of stuff before-- cut out the nonsense. Thanks.

The Sox need a good Brian Johnson in the future, not a messed up one because they're pushing him to come back into a bullpen role. You act like it's easy for a guy to come in with runners on and do a job he's never done before. That's right after he just came off anxiety issues. You also act like every mental problem is one and the same. Stop it with your phyco analysis Mr. Psychiatrist. You have no idea how bad his issues are.

You want him starting in majors, that would put a ton more pressure on him than a relief role . Layne comes into high leverage situations with runners on base more often than you think too. You act like every situation Johnson would be in is a low leverage situation, it's not. Every single person in that bullpen role has to be suited for the bullpen. That means coming into situations that a starter doesn't normally come into. Johnson is a lifelong starter. He is best used in this spot. Taking him out reduces his value and his innings that he needs to build back up.

It's also very funny how the Sox just had a loaded bullpen and now 75% of those bullpen pieces are down with injuries (Kimbrel, Koji, Smith). Injuries happen. It's reality.

Your all over the place, if you had just said keep him minors I wouldn't have a problem with that, but you said have him compete for rotation spot this year. Make up your mind! Last time I checked a starter had to pitch with runners on base, usually a bunch of times during a single start. I don't consider simple having runners on base high leverage. The Sox could be up 10 runs, still think that's high leverage? How do I act like every mental problem is one and the same? I only talked about anxiety which is a very common problem that millions of people deal with. As it is Johnson took 2 months off, something an average person would never be able to do. So if he's not ready and needs to be handled with kid gloves like you say we have a problem. Also per Globe article we have a very good idea how bad he is, he outlined his problems.

Not to turn this thread into even more of a dumpster fire, but all this animosity towards Johnson for being courageous enough to seek treatment for a very real affliction and disease is a prime example of why mental illness is still a taboo to most people. Despite how much money he's making/will earn from playing a sport, and despite how many other people deal with anxiety, those two things don't lessen Brian's problems, nor do they need to be said at all, in any way. I don't want to derail this thread away from Brian, but just thought I'd speak my mind, especially after dealing with bouts of deep depression in the last couple years of my college life. It's not a matter of pulling yourself up from your bootstraps and to quit complaining; if anything, bravery in the face of mental illness is dealing with it head-on and seeking treatment, which is exactly what he has done. That speaks insanely highly of his character, and not that he just got some sort of two-month-long vacation. He did, and is doing, what he had to do, and he should be proud of himself for doing what's best for his health and life.

Zack Greinke dealt with anxiety issues a few years ago as well if I remember correctly. It can be overcome. For Brian's sake and the sake of the Red Sox let's hope he is back on track. He has pitched well thus far in rehab. Not sure this is too off base, but I have always thought of him as a Mark Buehrle type. Not really over powering, good pitch mix with solid command and control.

at the end of the day this man is receiving treatment so props to him. He's not worth much in the trade market so we need to be very patient with him and let him figure it out.

Per Evan Drellich, Johnson will get the start on 4/18 in Toronto after Eduardo Rodriguez's wife gave birth to a baby boy on Sunday. Beyond the off-field stuff (which is all awesome) it also seems like a positive on the on-field side. Johnson gets a turn in the major league rotation on his regular day of work against a team that is really slumping, after a pair of strong Triple-A starts. Rodriguez gets to skip an early season road start and limit those innings. Johnson gets back into the majors after a rough 2016. Rodriguez gets family time.
