Please rule it out. No need to risk anything.

Please rule it out. No need to risk anything. Yeah I'm on board with this school of thought. He's the perfect 6th starter for next year IMO. I would trust him (if healthy) as the 5th starter already, and wouldn't want to expect more than that out of him as a rookie, so I don't see too much benefit of putting him back out there this year if there's any doubt he's fully healthy.

Sounds like it's not going to be a long term issue: link

Sure, the doctors say he doesn't need surgery, but people yelling on the internet say that he does. I don't know who to believe?

Did the people yelling on the internet get that one right? I think so. Last I checked the Yankees were a mess of an organization who had ruined Tanaka in a year they weren't going to compete anyway. But I've been a little tuned out this year, I may have missed a detail or two.

Toronto sweeps the Yanks. Only 1.5 out.
If James the mod makes 3 posts in a row without snark, it will be a good thing.
My bad. thought I hit the non sox thread, will leave it here.

Soxprospects.com don't have any moderators named James. Masahiro Tanaka doesn't need Tommy John surgery Neither does Brian Johnson. I guess that means I failed?

For the record, James is not a moderator. As a reference for everyone, the moderators are listed on the site's About page, which lists the full SoxProspects.com staff, both editorial, forum-based, web-based, and otherwise. Posters are reminded that the ground rules prohibit both attacks against other posters and baiting other members into arguments. Thanks everyone!

I know he's hurt, but what about the possibility of moving Johnson to the bullpen for next year? He seems to be able to control his breaking ball pretty well and maybe his fastball plays up better in bullpen. He's already proven all he can in minors and no real spot for him in major league rotation. He'd be a big upgrade on Breslow.

Sure, the doctors say he doesn't need surgery, but people yelling on the internet say that he does. I don't know who to believe? So it's much like the Tanaka case. Did the people yelling on the internet get that one right? Supposedly Johnson's problem is ulnar nerve irritation and not a UCL tear. Nerve irritation is surgically correctable (translocation), but it's also riskier, the success rate is less predictable, and it's more amenable (usually) to conservative therapy. So the two issues are a lot more different than would appear on the surface. I definitely agree with shutting him down for the season, because while a ligament won't usually heal much (or quickly), nerve sheath inflammation/irritation should, with no lasting sequelae.

After a relatively normal offseason, he can expect a relatively normal ST. Yayy. What excellent depth in Pawtucket as he works off the rust and gets his strength and control/command back. Meanwhile, MLB SP depth can be built around him, be it Hill or Owens or Cuevas or Escobar.

Great news! Of all of the disappointments this season, and there were a lot, Johnson being shut down and not being able to show what he could do was big for me. I like his chances of being a SOLID rotation guy. Who knows where he slots, but he is the kind of pitcher that would look good every 5th day and eat lots and lots of innings. I actually got to the place were I preferred him to Henry Owens. Now who knows. Henry got his chance and showed some real potential to contribute, and Brian has to wait.....again (remember his baseball meets face episode?).

The re injury risk is probably pretty real here still.

Great news. I assumed he had spent the last three months in Dr Andrews waiting room.

Or Johnson himself, which I think is the most likely scenario.

In my opinion Brian is Boston's number four starter right now. I'd trade Owens to a big ball park team like San Diego. I'd package him with JBJ or Castillo. Owens is a fly ball pitcher which has never worked well long term in Fenway. I wonder what Washington would take for one of their pitchers? By July 31 I see a totally different team, Sam Travis at first, Shaw at third, Xavier at short, Dustin at second, JBJ in right (assuming he's not traded) Castillo (assuming he's not traded) and Mookie in center. I have mixed feelings about Catcher as I am really high on both. Obviously Henley and Panda are a forgotten memory

Pitcher fragility and volatility make depth a priority, every year. Having Johnson, Buchholz and Wright, Koji, Taz back from the DL makes this rotation and pen much better and deeper. After watching top FA David Price, previously unheralded Jake Arrieta and normally unhittable D. Betances in the playoffs. Bannister's elevated role in pitcher evaluation provides hope for Dave's offseason plans to re-inforce Sox pitching.

Moved all the posts that had nothing to do with Johnson into the Hanley/Sandoval thread.
