Derrick Goold ?@dgoold 26m
@coachowsley @ddaviscns @jaysonst asking prices are vastly different. Cardinals not looking to part with top OF/SP prospects for Peavy.

Derrick Goold ?@dgoold 26m @coachowsley @ddaviscns @jaysonst asking prices are vastly different. Cardinals not looking to part with top OF/SP prospects for Peavy. SMH Edit: Think this is taken out of context. Here is the full conversation: Shane Owsley ?@coachowsley 44m @dgoold @ddaviscns @jaysonst Any idea of the asking price?? Also is David Price an option? Derrick Goold ?@dgoold @coachowsley @ddaviscns @jaysonst asking prices are vastly different. Cardinals not looking to part with top OF/SP prospects for Peavy. So I think the difference in asking prices are between Peavy and Price, not the Red Sox and Cardinals.

Red Sox Stats ?@redsoxstats 2m
A million speculation tweets about Peavy and Allen Craig. Would have to think the Sox would need to include more, but that's a good deal.
I haven't seen any of the million speculative tweets that said this but...

St. Louis generally is a team the Red Sox match up really well with (they need SP, Boston needs OF). It wouldn't surprise me if these Peavy talks end up morphing into something bigger/different involving Lester and/or Lackey.
I like the idea of buying low on Craig. Playing LF in Fenway would hide some of his range/arm issues, and this year aside, he's been a pretty great hitter who does not have huge platoon splits. He would give you the option for the following OF next year:
LF: Craig CF: Betts RF: Nava/Victorino platoon BN: Bradley
...which seems pretty terrific, with lots of platoon opportunities and backup layers.
As alluded to elsewhere, I love me some Piscotty, but he'd almost certainly only be in play for Lester/Lackey. Taveras has a very outside chance of being a possibility if Lester/Lackey are in play (a la the OAK/CHC trade), but I don't think St. Louis is desperate enough yet to go in that direction.

Craig and Grichuk not starting tonight.
Grichuk does nothing for us. I like Brentz just as much and both look like platoon bats vs LHP.

They really don't need two starters, so if it's expanding, we're probably getting one of the young starters back like Shelby Miller or Gonzales.

Nicolas Stellini @stellinitweets Randal Grichuk scratched from #Cardinals AAA lineup. May be involved in #RedSox Peavy trade. I'm much less excited about Grichuk. He's in the Brentz/Middlebrooks mold of RHH overaggressive hitter with some power, though he's shown slightly less swing-and-miss tendencies than those guys. He wouldn't be the worst guy to platoon with Nava in LF next year, but I'd hope that they can do better in terms of a long-term corner outfield solution.

Not sure the Cardinals are ready to give up on him, but they could very well just option him to the minors to open up another rotation spot.

No way they sell low on Miller unless he's part of a package for a huge name like Tulo or Price.

To something like AJP, Gomes, Carp, Peavy, and Drew. jk gosh we have a lot of junk.

Just saw this from Ken Rosenthal via MLB Trade rumors: Multiple reports today have indicated that the Cardinals have interest in Jake Peavy of the Red Sox, and Rosenthal reports that the two sides spoke a month ago, though not necessarily about Peavy. Boston has interest in the Cardinals’ young outfielders, and while St. Louis won’t deal Randal Grichuk or Stephen Piscotty for Peavy, the teams could expand the deal to include other players and make something work. Rosenthal floats the idea of a scenario in which Allen Craig heads to Boston, though that appears to be speculation. Doesn't the phrase "Randal Grichuk or Stephen Piscotty" set off the Sesame St one-of-these-things-is-not-like-the-other song? Isn't he like Brentz with slightly better range in RF and less gunplay? If would be great of we could figure out what we could add to Peavy to get Piscotty--but it'd be a lot. Positive views on Grichuk www.minorleagueball.com/2014/4/29/5661364/prospect-of-the-day-randal-grichuk-of-st-louis-cardinalswith vid mlb.mlb.com/news/article/stl/bernie-pleskoff-prospect-randal-grichuk-could-be-power-source-for-cardinals?ymd=20140513&content_id=75313290hmm looks good in CF on that vid

hmm looks good in CF on that vid That's why I could see the Sox wanting him for RF, which they see as a kind of second CF, at least for Fenway.

Grichuk makes sense. Remember, we're talking about Peavy here...
But I'm in the same boat as jmei... Not excited at all. I see him as a platoon righty at best.

Objectively speaking, Grichuk would be a pretty good return for Peavy, even if the Red Sox picked up most/all of Peavy's salary. I certainly didn't think that they'd be able to get a prospect of that caliber (he'd maybe slot in the system's top 20?). It's just tough to see him as their long-term solution in RF-- he's more a platoon guy at the MLB level.

If Craig (who is also out of the lineup) were coming here, they'd be calling up Grichuk -- unless Gomes were also going to StL.

Prediction: this is just going to be like last year's trade deadline when Bradley was taken out of the game for precautionary reasons. Just a bunch of prospect nerds freaking out about nothing on the internet.

Rob Bradford ?@bradfo 4m Peavy said he would be "extremely disappointed" if traded. Keeping tabs on situation through agent. Rest of his comments are forthcoming
