For what it's worth, all the Cardinals blogs pretty unanimously hate the idea of acquiring Peavy.

Does Craig platoon in LF or RF? While,I can't see him fitting in in right at Fenway, it doesn't help that him and Gomes both can only hit lefties. Somethings gotta give.

St Louis would seem to be a better fit for a guy like Ranaudo or Webster to me. They don't like spending a lot and they like young pitchers they can work with. Peavey lives fairly nearby in Alabama or some such place in the south. He would be digging St. Louis probably.
But the Sox have to be more interested in moving Peavey to someone. He is option A for a trade I would think with Gomes option B.
EDIT: The way they are doing this is almost like an auction. it's like "Heh everyone! Jake Peavey is moving now. Place your bids before the end of today's game!"
And I think that is a good approach. It gets people to make a decision and it spurs activity in general.

Derrick Goold ?@dgoold #cardinals looking for offense not Peavy, at this time. That's not a match when team sees Joe Kelly about to return to rotation. #stlcards

There is zero rush for this to happen, other than we all want to see what we get in return. Can't credit BC enough for creating this much interest in a player 3 week shy of the deadline.. That man has some panache.

It does run counter to everything else being reported. And why would the Cardinals be scouting Boston if they were looking for offense because we've been looking for it all season and still haven't found it.

Yeah, I think that is code for "We're not giving up Piscotty for Peavy so stop asking. Be happy we're offering Grichuk".

If it's Grichuk I would hope St Louis is picking up almost all the salary. There are not that many solid starters out there. Peavey is probably better in the NL than he has been with Boston.

The salary is only about 6 mil, shouldn't be much of an issue.

If we get a guy with the potential of Girchuk back for Peavy I'd be happy. At the very least he looks like he could take Gomes spot as a platoon OF and if he's above average on the corners and average in CF great. Maybe he tightens up his control of the zone and he makes an All Star game or two.
Regarding Piscotty obviously I've never laid eyes on him but a sub .800 OPS in the Pacific coast league isn't good. Also not sure he could play an average RF in Fenway. I know all the rankings seem to say he's good so I'll have to take their word on him. Seems like a RH Cechini which wouldn't be bad.
Lastly Craig's been bad for a year now but maybe a change of scenery would do him good.

If it's Grichuk I would hope St Louis is picking up almost all the salary. I completely disagree with this. If traded for, Grichuk would instantly become a top 3 outfield prospect in our system. A week ago most people would have been happy getting rid of Peavy for nothing more than a bag of balls. If the Sox get a legit prospect and salary relief for a half season of Peavy I will be stunned.

Derrick GooldVerified account ?@dgoold
Mozeliak, not one to talk trades much, said club has found it would take one of their starters to get a top starter. Net loss in control yrs
Wonder if this means we're talking Lester.

I also don't want to pretend that Grichuk isn't a legitimate prospect. Surely there is middle ground between "nothing at all" and "OMFG best prospect ever."

Surely there is middle ground between "nothing at all" and "OMFG best prospect ever." He'd probably be between 15-20, which is way more descriptive than top 3 OF prospect. When you "completely disagree" with someone not getting excited about Grichuk, you should have a bit more than that.

I just don't see the Cardinals giving up someone like Allen Craig for Peavy, so why not expand the trade a bit? Something like Lackey, Peavy, Koji, Marrero + for Craig and Shelby Miller, who is having a pretty bad season.
You buy low on Craig and Miller, while shedding some payroll. Cardinals get two starting pitchers, Lackey has an additional year, and the best closer in baseball for the stretch. Marrero becomes shortstop of the future, throw in another prospect to balance it out if needed.
