Peavy traded to SF for LHP Escobar and RHP Hembree

Sox 40 man now at 39. So adding these two newbies shouldn't affect the roster.

Realistically the chances were Peavy would net something marginal. Two prospects with fading value but potential upside sounds about right. Freeing up room for some of our AAA guys will likely be more consequential than anything these two bring to the table.

yikes: Brian MacPherson ?@brianmacp 16m Edwin Escobar has a 5.11 ERA in 20 starts in the PCL this year, but he was Baseball America's No. 56 prospect before this season. He's backed up a little bit. Some of it is the change in leagues, and some is not. We'll get a better chance to evaluate in Pawtucket. Still no spot for Owens in AAA. He is also 22 yrs old pitching in a band box league so the hitters have an advantage right?

So much for teams not being desperate, huh?
Also, for the people trying to downplay what we got in return, realize that we're talking about two months of Jake Peavy.

So who thinks we shouldn't trade Lester now? This return for a rental of Peavy is absurd. Brian Sabean is not an idiot: he must have had to outbid somebody else. This augurs well for the rest of our efforts this week. Eh, he does have a history of overpaying in trade deadline trades (see: Zach Wheeler for Beltran), though he's also made out well in other trades (for instance, the acquisition of Hunter Pence for Nate Schierholtz, Tommy Joseph and Seth Rosin). I think we already knew that it was a seller's market, so I'm not sure how much else this trade tells us.

WOW good work Ben, that is all I got. And, some of the know-everything guys think we should have dumped him for nothing just a few days ago Because keeping Jake Peavy a day longer will ruin the 2014 Boston Red SOX!! Those folks who raged every time Peavy made another start: you know who are are, and you were dead wrong on this one. Patience is a virtue, and it was most definitely rewarded this time.

Hmm where do they slot in the Sox system? I would think Escobar would fit somewhere in the top 10. They bought a bit low on Escobar ... PCL stats are always a bitch to evaluate, but BP has Fresno as a neutral park and has his FRA+ "Fair Run Average" as 94; last year he was 132 and 124. He's basically their (considerably younger, though) Matt Barnes, who went from 121 to 84. I think he'd be 11 or 12 (after Coyle). I'm guessing 13 & 24.

Final tally on Peavy trades (one year apart):
We trade:
Jose Iglesias, Frank Montas, Cleuluis Rondon, JB Wendelken
We receive:
Brayan Villarreal, Edwin Escobar, Heath Hembree (+ 1 year of Peavy, including World Series ring)

I feel I can comment because I wasn't one of these people. How can you say this with any degree of certainty? We don't know that Ben didn't pull the trigger because the price started to drop. Waiting until the deadline or closer to it does not necessarily mean more desperate teams will give up more. We don't know anything. You can draw a conclusion because we are happy with the package but it's just speculative.

Quality return for Peavy. If the Red Sox trades Lester, then hopefully Hamels is coming soon.

My point said they wanted to dump him for nothing. I believe we got something.

Wow. Never expected legit value for Peavy, to be honest. I thought that he got a worse rap on this site than perhaps he deserved, but I still thought he was a back-end starter who was only occasionally effective enough to be a true innings-eater. In return, we got a good starter prospect having a rough year and a potential late-inning reliever.
Can't possibly be mad at this one. Well done, Ben.

Well we made a trade with San Fran, but we traded the wrong player who 's name starts with a "p".
With the glut of pitching between Portland and Pawtucket, you can clearly see how the sox are lined up for a huge blockbuster.
I'm thinking Texas and I am guessing darvich, rios and nick Williams is our return.
I am also thinking we have a shot at a deal with St. Louis that relieves them of their glut of outfielders.

You can draw a conclusion because we are happy with the package but it's just speculative. There were folks demanding Peavy be DFAed immediately as far back as June. However low you are on Escobar and Hembree, getting that package was well worth keeping Peavy another half-dozen starts. Plus, while it is mostly speculation, I still think it's fair to think that this package was not on the table a few weeks ago. Matt Cain has gone on the DL in the meantime-- I don't think Sabean makes this trade if that injury doesn't open up a rotation spot (the other four are ably handled by Bumgarner, Hudson, Lincecum, and Vogelsong).

Depending on the recovery for Inglesias Iglesias and continued development at the plate and if either of these two prospects ever make any significant contribution I would anticipate all the Peavy transactions ending up a wash in the end.

Sox 40 man now at 39. So adding these two newbies shouldn't affect the roster. According to this very website, it's now at 40, with Lavarnway on the 60-day DL and rehabbing. But Lester, Drew, Gomes, Miller, Badenhop, Breslow, and possibly Uehara, Ross, and Doubront should all be following Peavy out of town soon. And Dan Butler should be able to clear waivers, and it seems increasingly likely that Drake Britton will not survive on the roster until ST. Still, with a bunch of guys looking to be added to the 40-man from within (Swihart, Coyle, Barnes, Shaw, possibly Hernandez, Gibson, Almanzar, Ramos, Diaz, Ramirez, Kurcz, Celestino), it would be good to get non-eligible players in most of the remaining deals (the obvious exception would be an MLB-ready corner outfielder to upgrade Nava).

And you said teams aren't desperate and won't give up good prospects (and this was in reference to Lester), so you may wanna hold off on the I-told-you-so game.

I have always liked Peavy. He had rotten luck with the Sox this season. I suspect he will do better with SF and I am happy for him that he gets another shot at a ring. The Sox did well with this trade.

Much better than a couple pure org guys. Well played. If this is what we can get for Peavy, the Lester package could be massive.

Yea obviously anyone who wanted to DFA Peavy were idiots.
However price dropping doesn't have to have anything to do with San Fran. Important note: I'm not suggesting it has, just disputing the claim waiting was clearly better. For all we know another team had offered more a week ago then pulled out and this package was a step down.
We should probably just focus on the actual deals as opposed to negotiation strategies.

Buster Olney ?@buster_ESPN 9m
The Giants and Red Sox are splitting remainder of Jake Peavy's salary for this year (about $5 million total; $2.5 million on each team).
