I know the thread is talking about Sam Travis. But someone mentioned that Travis Shaw was a 1B only type player.

Congrats to Sam for being named to the Carolina League all-star team. Much deserved.

And he adds an exclamation point to that selection by going 4 for 4 against Wilmington with 3 RBIs and a triple short of the cycle!

Promoted to Portland, per Alex Speier.

Yup, that was fast. Just wanted him to get the opportunity to play in the all-star game.

Margot and Travis in Portland sure makes that squad a lot more interesting to watch.

It's good to see. Margot and Travis are two guys that could very well hold down regular positions with the Sox. It's good to see Travis coming on as the need for a 1b long-term is there. They'll need to bridge the gap for a couple of years, but by 2017 or 2018 he should be competing for the 1b job.

Or maybe it will suddenly turn out he could play a respectable 3B all along, like the other Travis.

He certainly is struggling at 2b right now and the Sox have three guys starting on the major league level who can play 2b. My hope is that when and if and when that switch turns on for Moncada (maybe next year?), he'll rocket up thru the system and start pushing Sandoval for the 3b job.

Since his 2/20 in June, Travis has hit .345 / .409 / .460 in 127 PA in AA. His wRC+ is up to 129, which is the 4th best mark in all of AA for players 21 and under, minimum 150 PA:
Correa (133 PA, 224) Gallo (146 PA, 190) Gavin Cecchini, 139 Byron Buxton, 135 Nick Williams, 132 Travis, 129
He's also 3rd to J.P. Crawford and Cecchini in lowest K% - BB%.

Thought this was quite positive: Comment From MCG Is Sam Travis worth getting excited about as a Red Sox fan? His MiLB numbers aren’t horribly exciting, especially for power, but he’s in AA as a 21 year old. 12:37 Kiley McDaniel: Decent shot for 50 bat and 60 power, which is .260 and 25 homers, so you can decide if that’s worth getting excited about. www.fangraphs.com/blogs/kiley-mcdaniel-prospects-chat-81115/

60 power seems aggressive. Just from his stats, 60 hit/50 power seems like a much more likely upside scenario than the reverse - good strikeout and walk numbers throughout the minors.

Offensive 1B comps for that would be Matt Adams or Eric Hosmer on the high side and James Loney or Yonder Alonso on the low side. That's a "if all goes well" projection, though.

But like with all prospects, that ceiling is hard to reach. I'd be happy with a guy who could hit .265 and 15-17 HRs a year. That's a solid every day player. If he is better, then great. Here's to hoping.

One thing that stood out is his improvement of approach at the plate. His walk ratio is getting better over each level. 2.3% -> 6.1% -> 9.4% -> 11.7%

This site projects Travis to start next year at Portland again. His stats at Portland this year were remarkably similar to his stats at Salem. About the same number of games and at bats, etc. Since his stats at Salem were enough to earn him a promotion to Portland , I am not sure why his stats at Portland are not enough to earn him a promotion to Pawtucket to start next year. Since I assume Shaw will start next year with the Red Sox, it is not like he is blocked by another prospect at Pawtucket.
I know that stats do not always equal performance, but the postings in this thread about his performance have been encouraging. I hope they push him to Pawtucket to begin the year so that he can be ready around the All Star break if Hanley can not handle first base or if Hanley or Ortiz were to get hurt. A Shaw/Travis platoon at first might not be bad.

A Shaw/Travis platoon at first might not be bad. Despite Shaw's strong performance, I'm not sure it's a given he starts with the Red Sox next season. If Hanley isn't moved and takes alright to first base (and even if he doesn't, where else is he gonna play?), then it may make more sense to return Shaw to Pawtucket, unless he gets traded himself or he scorches the ball in spring training (not that that should really be the determining factor). As nice a surprise as he's been, he's still a guy who couldn't crack a .700 OPS in AAA this season, and is in danger of falling below the .800 mark at the MLB level this season. But sure, even if Shaw did start 2016 in Pawtucket, there's still going to be plenty of room on that roster for the two of them to play regularly. But there's not exactly someone else beating down the door for Portland's first base job at the moment, so giving him a followup there with eyes on promoting him shortly into the season if he picks up where he left off seems just fine to me.

The big thing for me is the swing is very nice and he recognizes the pitches really well. He saw a lot of breaking/off speed balls early when he was called up to Portland and got fooled a bit. Then he settled down and started hitting them. If he starts the year at Portland, he will get called up fairly early next year to Pawtucket. While at Portland he can continue to refine laying off pitches outside the strike zone.
