Draft order (Red Sox will pick #7)
|
Post by elguapo on Oct 2, 2012 12:32:36 GMT -5
This team has a large talent deficit to make up. Can't let the ~40th pick in the draft wag the dog. This is ...an early second rounder (albiet in a draft that is not highly regarded). It could turn into something or it couldn't but the downside is much smaller. Glad to know we're on the same page. For the record, there's nothing that makes free agents, per se, any more of a risk than players acquired via trade. It's all about years of control, age/performance arc, injury likelihood, and guaranteed $/estimated arb $. The Sox have a lot of money to spend and a lot of improvement to realize -- clearly free agents will be a big part of that, and that can be done while maintaining flexibility.

But who are you going to spend the money/pick on? To be relevant to this thread they have to be a) compensable under the new rules b) worth more than that so they turn down the offer c) fill a need for the Red Sox d) young and good enough to sign long term (or it's not worth losing a high 2nd rounder) Note that this negates the flexibility argument There aren't going to be more than a few guys who get past criteria B: Greinke? Hamilton, Bedard? Kuroda, who else? (potential FA list here: www.baseballprospectus.com/compensation/cots/?page_id=177)Each fills C and we can have a discussion about D. This should really be a seperate thread, but let's stop pretending that there is a vast pool of free agents who might cause us to give up a second rounder. It's like 2-3 guys, right?

It's like 2-3 guys, right? Yes. If one of those guys is available for a reasonable deal you don't let an early 2nd round pick stand in the way. The Sox are still going to sign free agents to big dollars or long contracts or both, where it makes sense - they just can't do too many for too much for too long.

The belief that the 2013 draft is not strong is, of course, subject to change. Players can have growth spurts and unexpectedly develop into big time prospects. Other players plateau. Some college players have disappointing junior seasons but, like Devin Marrero, are still held in high esteem by some teams.
Injuries make it difficult for scouts to make projections. Players who have been hurt get well and show skills and tools that were not previously apparent. May is a better time to evaluate a class than October.

With Toronto's win, we're guaranteed no worse than the #8 pick, and can't slip behind the Pittsburgh compensation. With a win we can't move up to #6. Only open issue is KC hopefully winning to guarantee us the #7.

With Toronto's win, we're guaranteed no worse than the #8 pick, can't slip behind the Pittsburgh compensation Anything else now is gravy. Let's see if we can somehow make life difficult for the Yankees. It could be that everything will be taken out of our hands tonight. If KC were to win and Miami lose, we'd be fixed in the 7th position regardless of what we do.

KC win guarantees us at least the #7. Miami wins, so still a shot at #6.

In that case only, they would pick 6th. Red Sox have Matsuzaka going tomorrow vs. the Yankees in a must win game for the division. The Marlins have rookie Tom Koehler on the mound vs. the Mets. The Red Sox will do their job, but 50/50 the Marlins lose tomorrow.

It's the only race that matters - the battle for the 6th pick (as of 10/3am):
#6 MIA -- (92 losses, NYMx1) #7 BOS -- (92 losses, NYYx1)
Note: BOS has clinched te 7th pick, which is protected and cannot be lost. The tragic number for BOS to be unable to reach the #6 spot is 1.
It should be noted that BOS loses a tiebreaker with MIA in case of tie.
Heading for the last day of the season the probables are:
Red Sox (RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka 1-6 7.68) @ New York Yankees (RHP Hiroki Kuroda 15-11 3.34) 19:05 ET.
New York Mets (RHP Jeremy Hefner 3-7 5.32) @ Miami Marlins (RHP Tom Koehler 0-0 5.40) 16:10 ET.
Go Marlins!

I don't care about the #6 pick vs. the #7 pick. No clear drop-off at this point. I'll trade that for a win vs. the Yankees knocking them into a playoff.
Some prominent names who we will see at #7: 1.Mark Appel, RHP, Stanford 2.Austin Meadows, OF, Grayson HS (GA) 3.Clinton Hollon, RHP, Woodford County HS (KY) 4.Clint Frazier, OF, Loganville HS (GA) 5.Ryne Stanek, RHP, Arkansas 6.Kris Bryant, 3B, San Diego 7.Sean Manaea, LHP, Indiana State 8.Stephen Gonsalves, LHP, Cathedral Catholic HS (CA) 9.Austin Wilson, OF, Stanford 10.Colin Moran, 3B, North Carolina Oscar Mercado, SS, Gaither HS (FL) Bobby Wahl, RHP, Ole Miss Karsten Whitson, RHP, Florida Jeremy Martinez, C, Mater Dei HS (CA)

Don't know anything about this kid. Not only can this hurt the Sox chances of getting the 6th pick. But, I'm 2 1/2 points out of first in my fantasy league. Need 6 strikeouts to pick up a point and can lower my era with some strong performances too. Damn.

I want to see the O's go for the Division Title. We've got our draft pick. Screw the Orioles. They openly rejoiced in knocking us out last year as the highlight of their pathetic decade, and have the nerve to complain that we're not putting out a team of All-stars to stay competitive this year. I want that 6th pick, because it's what is best for this franchise.

The once we have all the skinny SSs in the game--world domination.

"Aaaarrrgggghhh!!!! 1-0 Mets in the top of the third." 4-0 in 6th 4-1 top of the 8th. Not looking good. Why didn't Beuhrle start like he was supposed to? Now we have to root for the sox to win with Dice-K on the mound for Yankee spite.
