Since there is an off day on Thursday, they can skip Workman's spot in the rotation, if they wish, or they can bring Ranaudo back up to pitch Friday (he is eligible to be recalled today but is starting in AAA).

Hope you guys are right about Workman, but in the minors he also did well as a starter, even last year in the majors to an extent. And why is it that every time a pitcher has problems as a stater. the knee jerk response is to the pen. Some can for the reasons some cited; some just so so. it depends on the pitcher. I really doubt that "every pitcher is significantly better out of the pen." Every pitcher and significantly better, huh. Show that to be the case, if you can with that outrageous claim of 'every' and 'significantly better'. Good luck with the data. Who are you, Eric? Workman's success was based on good command and moving the ball around. His fastball was never that outstanding, but he was able to move it around and hit spots. He is having problems doing this now. He may get it back, but he will have the same problems in the pen, at least initially. But the pen talk has some validity, mop up or long relief so he can get his groove back. ALMOST every pitcher. And people have done the studies. On average, a move to the pen is worth about half a run off a pitcher's ERA. It's not something you really need to lean on statistics to prove, either. Pitching out of the pen is just easier. Relievers usually only need two pitches, they don't have to face batters multiple times, they can throw everything max effort... it's not rocket science.

Alex Speier ?@alexspeier 8m Brandon Workman optioned. Heath Hembree back up. Hate to see Workman pay the price for his last bad start after his previous being so solid, though am really glad to see Hembree back. Edit: Is Wison realizing this is his last chance this go round with him looking so sharp the last few weeks?

During the pre-game today they mentioned that Nava could be traded to a contending team for the stretch run. I don't think there is any way he clears waivers. I do think he'll be traded in the off season. Am I wrong about him clearing waivers?

Well, this is bad. Webster is getting absolutely hammered, if it wasn't for 2 base running mistakes from the Mariners, it would be 5-0.

Bases loaded, can Middlebrooks get a meaningful hit?

That's 4 HBPs by Mariner pitchers this series and only one HBP for the Mariners. Their pitchers need to get better control or some team like the Red Sox with nothing to lose could injure one of their batters returning the favor.

The problem in the first was that he threw almost all fastballs and nearly all at 92 MPH. Not showing real heat so far today, but slider and changeup seem to be working. I'm inferring all this from Gameday. Those of you who are watching it obviously have a better view.

We don't even know. He just... Left. Walked off the field mid-inning. Good to see WMB with some good swings.

Allen Webster, Sox stopper? Will Middlebrooks, RBI machine??? As for Cano, I have a feeling it was some sort of gut thing, maybe food poisoning or the start of a flu thing. He didn't look physically hurt, just uncomfortable.

It's get away day and the two pitchers probably made him sick. Should have time for a good nap before this one is over. Seriously, no report he just walked off.

Perhaps he didn't want to get hit again after their pitchers hit two more batters today.
