Yep, I'd take Pedro Alvarez over Holt/WMB platoon, and that's not because I expect greatness from Alvarez. As long as they can find regular ABs for him, WMB should start the year in Pawtucket. If cutting Lava is necessary to make room, I'm fine with that ... I'd rather have Butler as catching depth.

I'm not nitpicking at all. You are purposely misreperenting the source to make your argument.
Here is what the article says about the subjects in the article:
I'm sorry but the subjects in the article are NOT the same as a professional baseball player who has to play every day, travel accross the country doing so, and do so better than most anyone else in the world.
A study of japanese high school students doesn't make your point.
Not true. An epidural will temporarilly relieve the symptoms of a hernaited disc but physical therapy and rest will actually cure the problem. A baseball player's day is generally pretty packed and there isn't a lot of time for regular physical therapy and/or rest. It isn't unusual for any professional athlete to receive temporary treatment of an injury so that they can stay on the field. After the season the athlete would have time to undergo more extensive treatment as part of their offseason workout plan.
A third reason why some have surgery is because physical therapy and rest don't solve the problem. In those cases surgery is needed. Headley was able to play through the pain because it was temporarilly relieved by an epidural injection.
Statistically, we would expect such an injury to result in a lower BABIP as the player would not be able to hit the ball with as much authority. In the months following the epidural, Headley's BABIP fell in each month. This could suggest that the epidural is starting to wear off, though I guess you would actually have to watch a Yankee game to see how he is getting around.
During the off-season Headley is going to have to have more extensive treatment through physical therapy and bed rest. If it doesn't prove effective he would need surgery.
Maybe you are just going to have to admit you are wrong this time. The available evidence does not show that Headley's need for surgery is as certain as you are making it out to be.

Let's put some skin in the game. If Headley has surgery this offseason, you can choose my avatar through the All-Star Break. If he hasn't had surgery by Opening Day, I get to choose your avatar through the ASB. Deal?

That's your definition of skin? LOL. The avatar bets are trending downhill. JMEI is now willing to give up his, of which is of a to be FA.

Anyone think Murphy could play 3b? I know he's been playing it some the last month.
From a Mets beat guy.
Rubin tweet
If Mets do subtract salaries in order to add, the prime trade candidates would be Colon, Murphy, Niese, Gee.

Some speculation the Mets could subtract some salary. This is from a beat writer. I know Murphy has been playing 3B some but don't know if he plays it well enough to switch full time. Rubin tweet If Mets do subtract salaries in order to add, the prime trade candidates would be Colon, Murphy, Niese, Gee. Good find. Murphy has played 317 innings at 3B, though most of in 2011. If he can still play the position decently well, he'd be a potential fit. He's left-handed and only team-controlled through 2015, so if you think one of Middlebrooks or Cecchini could seize the position by then, he'd be perfect.

@peteabe 45s "Revelation of the day: Yoenis Cespedes can play 3B. Took balls in BP (just for fun). Very impressive. Beltre-like arm." I doubt that the move him but adds to the discussion a bit. Mookie stays in the OF and Cespedes to the infield?

We already have a future 3rd baseman on the roster. His name is bogaerts.
Much easier to find a short stop.

What about Jed Lowrie? Too injury prone?

Given a choice between Panda on an expensive 5-6 year contract and Lowrie on a cheap-ish 2-year, I'll take Lowrie. I'd rather get Headley on a shorter contract but conventional wisdom says it ain't happening. FWIW, I'm sure we'd be a better team next year with Sandoval but I don't see him as the type to fade his way to 1B/DH ... I think he simply implodes a la Youk.

What has he done in his short (44G this year) stint at 3B that gives you the confidence that he can handle the position on a permanent basis? I agree with Jerry Remy, that Xander needs a lot of work at shortstop to solidify his position there. But he's only 21 and seems like a willing learner. Spending time with Butterfield on timing, footwork and throwing should help him succeed at his natural position.

No thanks on Lowrie. Let's put it this way - remember Drew last year? He was WAY better offensively than Lowrie has been this year.

Right, and that's his only season in MLB in which he both played over 100 games and was above-average offensively. Really all depends what he'd sign for and what you think Cecchini is.

Really all depends what he'd sign for and what you think Cecchini is. Up until about a week ago Chris, was all for signing Lowrie over all the available 3b people out there. Reason? To me, there just IS no reasonable FA out there without high bust potential that won't come cheap. Now? after really thinking it over? Am more towards thinking Holt can be the same type of player, only hopefully a healthier player than is Jed Lowrie. Not that am saying not sign him, if the team moves Holt in a deal as Lowrie can play every place in the IF, exc. C/P, but would prefer to head into 2013 with a 3b of Cecchini and Holt as the backup/utility guy if he's not traded.

If your option is Lowrie, let's roll with Cecchini, WMB, Holt, Cespedes, Betts, whoever.
EDIT: for the first half anyway and then see what we have

<deleted redundant repetition >
I mentioned Lowrie because he might be an interesting option for the right money, say 2/18 or something like that. He's got some positional flexibility and if the money is right it wouldn't be too big of a deal if he needs to be benched, traded quickly or whatever. He's not going to be the piece to put us over the top next year by any stretch. Spot on that it depends on what you think of the prospects though I'd widen that to include Cecchini, Coyle and Marrero ... mostly with an eye toward 2016.
I'd prefer Lowrie to Holt because 1 - Lowrie is a better bet to produce at the plate 2 - Holt as a super-sub is going to get plenty of playing time already 3 - Holt as our starting 3B lowers the quality of the bench ... a lot

Someone will want Lowrie as a shortstop, which he's played decently well defensively in recent years, and will value him more than the Red Sox would as a third baseman.

I think Holt is a better option than Lowrie. Brock Holt is a great story. At best a legit Utility Player. 540 OPS second half of the season doesn't fair well as a starter at any position. WM is 26. The days of waiting on this player are over. Time to move on. He had several chances to put it all together. With a solid pipeline at 3B with GCech, Devers whose projected as a 3B and a steady JBetts climbing the ladder next season plus Free Agency and trade market, say good bye Will.
