Wow, really hoping that's a mistake, because it also would mark the return of the mythical Henry Owens slider... McDaniel has a 55 present change as well. So I doubt it's a mistake.

I think if he has another year like last year and doesn't drop off in AA, he'll probably be in the top 20 a year from now. That's pretty aggressive. Consider that Dalton Pompey isn't in either BA's or BP's top 20. Not saying it can't happen, but he'd have to have a pretty big year to jump into the top 20. That's not something that you can just sort of do. From the BA Top 100 chat: Other Sox related tidbits, including one relevant to the current discussion: There are others, too ... didn't want to paste any more.

@ soxfanatic: I meant the whole line of grades. They grade his "slider" instead of his curveball. He doesn't throw a slider. I would just strongly disagree with throwing a 55 on the changeup (seriously, the thing drops like a breaking ball sometimes), whereas giving him a grade on a slider instead of his curve signifies to me that there may have been a mistake in there somewhere.
@ brain toast: Yeah, he could definitely make that jump. I guess my (poorly made) point was that it'd take more than just a repeat of last year to do it, but that is definitely within the realm of possibility.

best changeup in the class at 55. smh
@chris, his change almost looks like a splitter to me.

Owens throws two curves, right? The slower curve that he throws more often has been pretty effective on minor leaguers but may not play in the majors, and a harder one that I've only seen him try out a few times. Any chance that harder curve was misidentified as a slider? Just trying to figure out what happened here.

For those who've not seen it, Ben Badler at BA discusses Moncada and the perception of scouts. There's a bit to be excited about:

For BA, the Sox now have three guys in the top 25 (Moncada at 10, Swihart at [now]18, and Castillo at 22). That's a lot of top-level talent combined with a lot of depth (Margot, Devers, Owens, Rodriguez, etc. etc.), and of course guys who aren't top 100 but you can't imagine could be in a year or two. (And excluding guys who would be there if still eligible.)
Plus the #7 pick.
That's a good place to be.
Now to see if the players end up making ML impact.

Where does it say that Moncada has been ranked #10 by BA ? I thought they were going to wait until after the physical and official announcement. Note: Doesn't change the sentiment of the post.

Somebody hasn't listened to the SP podcast... (Badler tweeted it it yesterday, too.) LOL, I was asking in another thread if there was a way to download the podcast so that I don't have to deal with the player. Like FanGraphs podcasts or like they used to be. I tried right clicking, etc, don't see anything applicable. NM found it: Ben Badler @benbadler · 22h 22 hours ago Once it's official, Yoan Moncada immediately becomes Boston's new No. 1 prospect, and the No. 10 prospect in baseball. LOL, I had seen that, just forgot.

It's BA, not just Badler. Cooper confirmed on Twitter.

Have they reassessed where the Red Sox rank as a team ?

I'm giving away too much of the podcast content (which was really interesting --- just hearing how often Badler scouts cuba, in addition to the non-Mondcada content, etc.) I'm not sure it was very specific when he answered Hatfield/James-in-England, but somewhere behind the Cubs. He didn't mention the Twins on the podcast, but I'd assume its a bit of a tossup, and would depend on how you weight Sano vs. Swihart/Castillo. All of that is a a bit weird with Castillo included, since he is the lone odd guy who ranks as a prospect but not someone who would make an "under 25" list.

That falls in line with Callis who said behind the Cubs but slightly ahead of the Twins. Interestingly, they don't rank Castillo. In one of the tweets he indicated the Twins pitching prospects are the ones that get differing viewpoints.
ADD: I also recall Kiley McDaniel saying in either a chat or a podcast that if the Sox got Moncada, he'd rank them second.

It seems scouts see Twins pitchers like Meyers as bullpen arms rather than a starter. The only Sox prospect we hear of is Barnes, and he isn't ranked in any top 100 list.

It's crazy to think how amazing the Astros system could be of they had drafted differently. Buxton instead of Correa (whom I love anyway) Bryant instead of Appel. Rodon instead of Aiken.

Also. Fantastic podcast guys. Pardon my french, but when you hear an "outsider" say how fucking awesome the system is; it's very encouraging.

It's not like Appel and Correa have already proved to be terrible picks. Correa is a top 5 prospect and Appel is a top 100 prospect.
