Good inning by Barnes: Two K's and a pop out. And now back your regularly scheduled programming. Should I be worried that our #6 starter isn't being stretched out at all, nor pitching against MLB hitters? I can't remember the last time that the Sox didn't have 6 or 8 guys going full tilt as starters during ST. While they have impressive depth 1-5 (3a-3e?) I'm not sure they have the proven lower depths they're used to in this department. Perhaps I should consider Wright the best candidate to fill in, but given schedules and last minute stuff, etc. it's usually good to have more than one guy who you're ready to throw out to pitch in Boston at a moment's notice. I still think Wright is the Sox 6th starter if he's pitching well. Also, if Rodriguez, Owens, and Johnson are all impressive, I do think Barnes goes to the pen (trades could change everything, too). He's showing he could potentially be a good closer, but definitely a good setup man. Maybe not what we would have hoped for (starter), but if he's lights out in that role, then it's not bad for #1 pick. EDIT: I'll add, I don't think Barnes will be go to the pen or be in Boston until July/August (barring injuries).

JBJ hitting .364 with 1K in 11 PAs. Here come the stories about making the team.
edit - also an encouraging 9 up and 9 down for Masterson with 4 Ks even though it looks like the Rays only sent a couple regulars.

It must be nice to be a spring training fan from a big market team like Tampa. They're playing a split squad and their other game is at home where they have radio coverage.
Boston can't even get someone that can keep gameday current.

If he's made some significant changes to his swing, I'd be all for that. Give Rusney some time in AAA, and play an elite defender in CF while you have two inexperienced outfielders in Hanley and Mookie getting acclimated in the corners. Move Victorino before he suffers a long term injury. Remember, it's not like JBJ has a hitting style that works in such a way that he's exceptional in AAA (2013) and horrible in MLB. He looked just as helpless in AAA in 2014 as he did in MLB. I still believe he'll figure things out at the plate enough to be a carve out a nice career as a 2.5+ WAR player.

Nick Cafardo ?@nickcafardo 3m3 minutes ago Justin Masterson very economical and precise in his three shutout innings today. The radar guns had him at 87-90 mph.
Alex Speier ?@alexspeier 3m3 minutes ago Henry Owens on the mound. Against LHH Corey Brown, fastball got up to 93 on stadium gun before a K on a 77 mph curveball. . . . Brian MacPherson ?@brianmacp 3m3 minutes ago As was the case the last time he pitched, Henry Owens has been up in the zone with his fastball in his second inning of work.
Brian MacPherson ?@brianmacp 5m5 minutes ago Henry Owens got two strikeouts with his curveball against the Rays -- old friend Corey Brown and new acquisition Steven Souza Jr.

Not sure if you read this, posted it yesterday. www.overthemonster.com/2015/3/9/8173751/red-sox-outfield-jackie-bradley-mechanics-swing-breakdown-2015It's a great article with evidence that his swing is back to the one he had before they started to screw with it beginning right after CC Sabathia made him look foolish on opening day of 2013 (I think) with the low inside pitches that he couldn't handle.

Cecchini with a 2R single. Owens gave up a run. Apparently the Sox scored a run in the bottom of the 8th, go into the 9th up 5-1 Somebody needs Gameday training.
I think Bradley is 2/3 with a BB & 2B . . . 5-1 final Spruil closed it out

Gameday is still messed up.
Total media fail, Sox should be embarrassed here.

I'm generally a sunny optimist, so I'm gonna stop posting about JBJ until I get optimistic about him, but ... his 2013 swing has already proven to dominate during spring training. It's what it can do when the pitches are real and guys are executing game plans that is at question.

Right, but I think if he had stuck to his 2013 swing during all of 2014, he wouldn't have been as bad as he was. He probably wasn't going to match what he put up in the minors, but if he's just a .250/.320/.370 kind of guy, he's a starting CF.

I mean, it's hard to believe he could've been as bad as he was. But he started messing around with his swing after he was exposed in the majors. Was that an overreaction that caused a total collapse of his skills? Possibly. Perhaps he just needs to accept that he's not going to be a good hitter and go for being a meh hitter with unbelievable defense and see if that works out.

This entire thread should be quoted every time people want to rush a prospect because of a good spring training despite the fact he hasn't finished his development. If development didn't matter, teams wouldn't waste their time with it. Bradley probably should've been at Portland to start 2013. Instead he was a Double-A-quality hitter getting his swing ruined, possibly permanently, because he was wholly unprepared for someone like C.C. Sabathia. All because he had 26 hits in spring training.

All because he had 26 hits in spring training. Spring training results that mater - 1. Not getting hurt. 2. Pitchers' velocity. The hitting stats are pretty much useless when so many of the pitchers are working on specific things like fastball command or messing with a new pitch rather than ruthlessly attacking a batter's weaknesses. Pitching stats are a little better, but I think some of the best hitters don't really get up to the same level of concentration when the games are meaningless.

I tend to think that Spring Training stats don't really matter, but a guy's scouting report often does.

From Alex Speier's newsletter, one of my hidden gems:
DISPATCHES FROM THE BACK FIELDS: The Red Sox’ outfield crowd doesn’t stop in the big leagues. It’s entirely possible that the PawSox will open the year with Jackie Bradley Jr., Rusney Castillo, and Bryce Brentz in their lineup. Even further below them is an oft-overlooked but intriguing prospect, outfielder Henry Ramos.
Ramos, who turns 23 in April, hit .326 with a .368 OBP and .431 slugging mark in 48 games in Double A Portland last year before suffering a season-ending stress fracture of his tibia. Though not invited to big league camp, Ramos is getting some time in big league games this spring.
He went 2-for-4 with a double against the Cardinals while playing all nine innings in right field on Monday. Ramos is considered one of the Sox’ best minor league outfield defenders, with the arm and range to play right and some raw power to complement what appears to be an improving understanding of himself as a hitter.
His emergence as a potential fourth outfielder in the not-too-distant future bears monitoring. If he continues the progress he showed when healthy in 2014, it could position the Sox to contemplate trades involving players like Brentz or Bradley with limited danger to the team’s near-term outfield depth. . . .
