Ugh.
Note to Rick Porcello: if you throw a sinker, please make sure it actually sinks.

We should have a pool when Holt's BABIP drops under .500. I'm taking May 6th. Of course, it might just stay above .500 all year...

So, uh, Hanley still looks crazy-strong.
ADD: that was a very Manny-esque swing. Just terrific balance.

HANLEY!
His swing looks identical to Manny's. He doesn't quite style the HRs as much, though. He may want to consult Domingo Ayala's "How to hit a home run" video once more jut to get the pointers.

Hanley hits the ball so hard it's insane.

Mike Napoli's start this year is basically why you take all BSOHL stories with a big grain of salt, even when there are significant medical reasons to put stock in them.

Stat that surprised me: prior to today's game, Pablo Sandoval ranked 28th in pitches per plate appearance this year amongst all qualified MLB hitters. Last year, he ranked 133rd out of 146 qualified hitters, so this is quite a turnaround. His swing rates are at career-lows, especially versus pitches outside the zone. Looks like the Red Sox philosophy is rubbing off on him. Of course, his contact rates on pitches outside the zone is down as well (resulting in a pretty big uptick in strikeout rate) and he still doesn't have an extra-base hit, so it's unclear whether this change in plate discipline is net beneficial for him. But there's definitely been a change.

...and Porcello leaves another ball up. Bleh. On the one hand, it was only a homerun by a couple of inches. On the other hand, it would have been a no-doubter in several other parks.

So just to be clear, Craig is only using up a roster spot so he can get sunflower seeds for the rest of the guys?

Is it just me or is Mookie getting into a significant number of 0-2 counts?

Hard to find why we let Victorino play.

So Betts is the only Red Sox hitter so far to get out on a ball in play.
Edit: And as I type that it immediately becomes false.

It might seem significant to your eye test, and of course 25% seems high, but what jmei just provided is statistical evidence (comparing to a larger sample of players) that Mookie is better than average (in terms of regression to the mean). Which means that he is likely not statistically significantly different from average in the direction you are suggesting. Plus we are still in SSS territory.

I guess Porcello just wanted to get himself in the GDP stat book.

Things you never thought you'd say. Will Middlebrooks just took Jon Lester deep.

Victorino got a hit! As fun as it is to complain about his undeserved playing time, I would love to see him return to form. When he is healthy and productive, he is one of my favorite players in the game and, even though he has frequently looked lost so far this season, perhaps a little luck is all he needs to turn things around.

I'm liking this pitch count. Getting Gonzalez out before the 6th will really cut into their bullpen, and with the early game tomorrow...
