Old friend Jason Garcia in the game. Almost hits Victorino in the head with his first pitch. Next two pitches are four inches off the zone. Nice velo, though.
ADD: ...and then he works back to a full-count vs. Victorino and gets him to hit a little broken-bat flare and gets Holt to ground out to end the inning.

THIS is the situation where Farrell is willing to let Tazawa go more than one inning?!?

Garcia's velo settled in at around 91-93 with decent control but middling command. He had trouble getting guys to offer at his slider and threw a few flat ones (Craig lined one that just spun in the zone to CF for an RBI single). He looks like he might be able to stick as the 7th man in the bullpen, but the Orioles will have to be comfortable with keeping a guy on their roster who looks replacement-levelish all season.

Tarpaulin down, looks like a series split thanks again to a ton of unearned runs. Need some guys to start finding outfield grass instead of leather.

Their infatuation with keeping our Rule 5 guys is borderline crazy. They really can't get someone better than that?

Safe to say the Red Sox deserved to win this game regardless. Chen gave up 5 unearned runs but also walked 5 guys and hit another (and one of the errors was his).

Fortunate with a split the way things went this weekend. A loss today would have lousy.

Keep it rolling--however it happens, I'm happy with a win.

any update on calling it? I'm just staring at "THIS GAME IS IN RAIN DELAY." for the last couple hours. I mean they sold enough beer and food by now, right?

Nice to get the split. We get them next weekend in Baltimore. Hope we hit better. We'll get a second look at Gonzalez and Chen. Plus, we'll see Norris vs Miley.

A couple quick thoughts on the youngsters. Mookie will be fine, bad BABIP luck has resulted in his "meh" stats. He's getting over-anxious and lunging at low offspeed pitches that he usually lays off. Betts also got off to a slow start in the bigs last season, so I'm just prepping for his breakout. Xander has me a little bit worried though. He's still chasing that slider low and away and really hasn't made much great contact. Mistake fastball that he should crush are being fouled back. Yet it's hard to complain when he rocks a 6/7 BB/K ratio. Here is my thought process on Bogaerts. The K numbers concerned Boston last season, so they're having him refine his approach and turning his focus towards simply making contact. The results are evident of this. As Xander continues to work on hitting the ball up the middle and being an OBP guy, the raw power should slowly translate into game power. The power isn't vital right now. He has the raw power to get pull-happy and become Brentz-esque, but that's not the long term goal. Short-term, I think Bogaerts' numbers will falter a bit. But long-term, he will (ideally) somewhat continue his BB/K numbers & translate raw power into in-game power. If everything clicks we could be looking at a .280/.350/.440 type hitter. The questions is when that power will emerge. 3 months? 3 years? Who knows. I know we are in super-SSS territory, but I love statistics so I wanted to see how Bogaerts' early numbers stack up with 2014: | 2015 | 2014 | O-Swing% | 30.7% | 30.3% | O-Contact% | 77.4% | 62.2% | Z-Swing% | 53.8% | 61.9% | Z-Contact% | 88.0% | 86.6% | Swing% | 41.8% | 45.3% | Contact% | 84.0% | 78.1% | SwStr% | 6.2% | 9.7% |
Again, basically meaningless at this point, but worth throwing out there. And by the way, Ryan Hanigan with the awesome .160/.400/.200 slash line
