4/27-4/29 Red Sox vs. Blue Jays Series Thread

I think there is going to be a real battle between the Old Real School v the New Fake Skool this year on this website. The one's who have most to lose are the New Fake Skool's...IMHO. At some point the results will be tallied up by W and L....not peripheral stats. It's going to be interesting. This is hilarious. The results will be tallied up over a series of years based on regression to the mean and variance. Of course, variance will sometimes make it look like batting average matters, or that RISP is a thing, or that 0 strikeouts is okay since you still got the "W." But the "new school" is embraced largely around baseball because it is much more predictive of future performance than surface statisitics such as W-L, ERA, RBI, and BA. There is a reason that Arizona and Philadelphia, the two teams who refuse to embrace sabermetrics even to a small degree, are the laughingstock of baseball. Also, how presumptuous of you to label the "new school" as fake. You sound like a 3rd grader name-calling at lunchtime. People, the Red Sox have a winning record. We lost a 3 run game because of John Farrell's mismanagement. The thing I am most concerned about is that John Farrell is ruining our pitching staff (along with the help of BABIP, which will regress to the mean so I am not concerned about that). We will make a trade or call somebody up from Pawtucket soon. Relax. LOL!

“@jtomase: Farrell: ”So many times, the starter sets the tone.“ Needless to say, Buchholz didn’t set a very good one tonight.”

Nobody getting DFA'd ... each piece of this creation is a unique one-of-a-kind masterpiece. Option somebody ... someday ... but DFA, no.
And DFA is my middle name. Or something. Give me Craig and the bullpen underbelly. I'll work with them.

I think the term "toast" implies being burnt....but this seems to the case irregardless. This is clearly a nit meant to be picked by brainthetoast.

At some point the results will be tallied up by W and L....not peripheral stats. It's going to be interesting. We will make a trade or call somebody up from Pawtucket soon. Relax . April trades of impact players happen, um, never. And even if, say, Hamels or a possible impact starter was available, the other team has even more leverage than they had a month ago. Then again, this is Ben "sell low" Cherrington, so who knows? If anything's coming it's coming from AAA. But as much as I really like Eddie Rodriguez, he's not Clayton Kershaw. This team may get some incremental changes but they're going to have to fix themselves and ride it out on bad innings by starters and finding outfield grass by hitters - luck, skill and all. Right now I'd send down Craig, DFA Mujica, and, if I needed another reliever, send down Ross, too. Layne needs to come up, and probably Barnes, though I read they just told him he was a starter again - I don't want them to Jobba this guy. I still think he has potential as a starter. And hey, I like OBA, xFIP, ISO, K/BB, swinging strike % and a pile of other stats, but at the end of each day you are what your record says you are. Tonight that's a hair above .500. It may feel worse than that after this game, which by my count is the third helped along into the loss column by their manager this year, but tomorrow is another opportunity to win.

www.bostonherald.com/sports/red_sox_mlb/clubhouse_insider/2015/04/clay_buchholz_after_early_exit_its_not_going_to_happenClay Buchholz didn't have many answers for what happened in a five-run third inning as his rough start paved the way for the Red Sox' 11-8 loss to the Blue Jays on Tuesday night. But after the game, Buchholz vowed to be better. "Whenever your team gives you a four run lead you're supposed to come out better than that," he said. "I went out there with a game plan of throwing strikes, let them put the ball in play and get outs and I walked the first guy and all the contact they made, they hit the ball hard and it wasn't at any of our defenders in the field. I've got to do a lot better job than that." Buchholz was pulled after just 62 pitches when he allowed a walk and five singles and recorded two outs in the third inning. "I would have liked to have stayed in there a little longer but it's not my call," he said. "I've got to do a better job of persuading I guess, in a way. A couple of pitches got hard, a couple of them I felt were pretty good pitches, others were mistakes in the zone, that's what good hitters are supposed to do. I'm a lot better than that so, I get them again in two more starts. I'll do a lot better job next time.'' Buchholz has a 5.76 ERA with 33 strikeouts in 25 innings through his first five starts.

I turned to the Yankees game and saw yet another well pitched game by the Yankees. Meanwhile nobody on the Red Sox can consistently record outs. What a joke. Well they just lost Tanaka for at least a month. So you have that to hang your hat on. Just saw that. He was a ticking time bomb, anyways. What's amazing to me is that we are in the era of toned down offense, where pitching is supposedly easy to come by and we're watching this garbage day after day after day. There's nobody that's truly been effective or reliable. We're at the point where we're wondering who's salvageable. I think Kelly and Porcello, and that's about it. Buchholz, Masterson, and Miley look like fungible pitchers to me. I just really hope that the Sox don't cave into Philly for Hamels and hand over Margot and Owens, let alone Swihart and Betts which they're not crazy enough to do. The Sox have little sensible choice other than to ride out the storm, see if anybody pitches back to their ability, and replace who can't thru the minors assuming by June or July that Rodriguez, Wright, and Johnson, if not Owens are possibilities for the rotation.

Down 2012 & Up 2013 & Down 2014 & now what for 2015 season. I hate Ben's crazy ideas for restructure the team roster yearly. The starting 5 Pitchers were terrible. They're bottom of all MLB as team pitching staff as each starter is prone to have melt down in one inning. I've seen that so far this month. I hope Ben get fired soon if the team is fall apart due to starter pitching problems and overtax the relievers. I had enough of him as GM. So Ben should have 5 different starting pitchers? Sounds reasonable and well thought out.

Hanley's hit 9 HR in 78 AB now, or almost 1 every 2 games he's played to date. That's kind of good. Take Hanley out of this lineup and where is this team? I still can't believe people had issues with signing this guy. If he strikes out 4 times next game, people will be saying "I can't believe we signed this guy!"

Is it just me or it feels like the same people complain when the team spends on free agents and then when they don't spend on someone they complain they aren't spending enough?

Buchholz isn't going to carry a babip north of 400 for the remainder of the season. His biggest problem so far has just been bad luck. Among qualified starters, he's 10th in baseball in xFIP, 10th in SIERA and 16th in FIP. 5 games in and I'm easily more optimistic about him than before the season.

Ok the first month is over. Victorino is Dl. So right now I don't want to see Craig . I want Napoli and Nava to take a break. Holt deserves to play more and they have JBJ up. Maybe bring up Brentz or someone else doing good that can handle either 1b or outfield help. Down in AAA Swihart is doing good.
Regarding the pitching which is a mess ,we need swing and miss pitchers. We need to give a couple of people a chance to shake it up. If Barnes and Layne look the best or how about Ramierz or Cuban pitcher.
Can't do trades right now. There is no excuses except financial commitments to these guys in Boston. Make an example of someone. These pitchers do not get it. Starters real quick Masterson competes but no velocity. Buch same story for six friggin years. Miley do not know but I think its conditioning. Kelly is still trying to figure out how to pitch. Porcello needs to step up. I keep seeing other teams promoting there pitchers and I understand different circumstances but. I want one to pan out for us. please!

I love advanced metrics, I really do and I believe most data about players can be derived from them. With that said, Clay must be unlucky for his career because this is the pitcher that he is. it just seems like whenever a runner gets on that he just starts to fold and pitch scared. As soon as things don't go his way he just let's the flood gates open right up on him. He's the one person that could make me believe in intangibles because he's clearly lacking something. maybe I'm still just hung up on him not covering 3B in NY.

Is it just me or it feels like the same people complain when the team spends on free agents and then when they don't spend on someone they complain they aren't spending enough? I give Cherrington a lot of grief, but his free agent track record is pretty good. I still would've preferred no Miley, and, as much as I like him, passing on Panda, getting Headly and using the rest of the dough for Scherzer with an opt out after 3/4 years or Lester. Obviously this is not how the chips fell, but on the whole, the free agent pick-ups have been more hits (Victorino, Napoli, Koji, Hanley, Panda, Badenhop, Dempster) than misses (Mujica, Pierzynski) - those are off the top of my head. It's his trades that have been much more spotty. And personally, I just wasn't big on building a rotation of two 3s and three 4/5s predicated on ground ball pitching. Finally, I know we like our stats and I am not much for "intangibles," "Gomesiness" or whatever, but I've heard enough from front office people (including one stat-loving former assistant Red Sox GM), managers and coaches I've met over the years who've told me they love having at least one hard-assed #2 or better starter on the staff, not just because he can often be a stopper when a slide comes, but also because he has the stuff to lead by example and back up any vocal leadership that comes in play. Pitchers are a neurotic bunch and, I've been told, there are times some guys need a nudge, or a kick in the pants from an alpha dog.

Is there a statistic that measures average batted ball velocity for any given hitter or any given pitcher? If so, does it mean anything? I feel like it would help sort out whether BABIP (or BABIP against) was truly artificially low/high for any one player.

I agree with you on Miley and some of the trades, but its been more good than bad. And the misses seem to be more on the small stuff than theo, who had several very high profile busts on his resume.
I think letting lester go was the right move. They can also send miley down to AAA.

Pitchers are a neurotic bunch and, I've been told, there are times some guys need a nudge, or a kick in the pants from an alpha dog. One thing Ben C got right this off-season thus far (Besides acquiring Ogando and Hanley) was taking Pablo over Headley. I remember getting mocked at the time for that absurd assertion, but so far in SSS: Headley - .234/.289/.364 OPS+ 82 Age 31 Sandoval - .329/.417/.466 OPS+ 147 Age 28 Just more fun stats: Headley - RAA: -3 RAR: 0 WAR 0.0 Sandoval - RAA: 4 RAR: 7 WAR 0.8 ISO is only .07 in Sandoval's favor, so the lack of power is still very real with him. Before I hear about Sandoval having a high BABIP, yes, I know. His BABIP is .379. That's not insanely absurd. It'll probably fall a bit, but he's in a good place. Headley's BABIP is at .296 which is only a tick under from where he was last season.

Something has to be done about the starting rotation. I think the next starter who doesn't go at least five innings should be put in the bullpen, replacing one of the RPs who either is DFA'd or sent to Pawtucket. Then one of either Johnson or Rodriguez should be brought up to take that starter's place. And then the other one should be brought up to replace the next starter who blows up.
It's not bad luck that is causing these problems. It's bad pitching. It should not be allowed to continue much longer

There are other guys out there we can trade for than Hamels. Dealing with the Phillies doesn't really make a lot of sense anymore. Names please? And unlike Philly, who may be dealing now - not that I think any deals would happen now, - but since you offered, what Hamels-like starters or better are available? Cause I think these guys, or the AAA fodder, are our prom dates until July at the earliest.

I'm beginning to think that if you switch the AAA rotation (Owens, Rodriguez, Johnson, Barnes, and Wright) with the major league rotation (Buchholz, Porcello, Masterson, Miley, Kelly) it would be an improvement.
