This team seriously can't catch a break. Get a lead, pitchers bad or unlucky. Pitch well or pitch lucky, hitters bad or unlucky. The sequencing has been killing us.
Thankfully, the division is terrible, this game is still winnable, and we are only 3 games out of first place. Hooray!

I think scientists have proven that if you get swept by the Twins, there is no way you possibly make the playoffs. In other words the season is on the line today boys.

Amazing double play by Porcello. All-Star. You're approaching 30 posts in the last 24 hours. Impressive.

Yup, losing a series to the 27-18 Twins dooms your season. In fact, one bad inning dooms your season, and makes Farrell and Cherington the worst ever.

The Red Sox have the only negative run differential in the AL East and by quite a lot. So, I'd say they're just underperforming. I didn't run the numbers, but it's -38 vs next is the Orioles at +2. I find it hard to believe that luck is making that big of a difference but maybe someone can show me I'm wrong.

Ooh that's a tight rhyme...

This is a good point, thanks for the numbers there. We are definitely underperforming, but I was more speaking to BABIP issues that underlie the runs scored/runs allowed. However as James was pointing out the other day (when discussing Kelly's performance), those two things don't necessarily have to be mutually exclusive - you can be both bad/underperforming and unlucky. Thanks for pointing this out though, I hadn't realized the run differential was so large, at least comparatively to the rest of the division.

How is Holt as good as he is in the OF? I can't think of any examples of an IF moving to OF and being so instantly good.

Why can't we get home runs from our Rosario and Hicks type players?

I'd find it interesting if someone with more knowledge of baseball databases could prove/disprove if the reason Porcello is giving up more HR's is due to him using more 4 seam fastballs instead of 2 seam/Sinkers.

Which part are you unsure about, Porcello using more 4-seamers or 4-seamers allowing more HRs?
