“Espinoza,” says one NL scout who honed in on Greenville, “could be in high A at 17.”

He was talking about Espinoza eventually becoming Jose Fernandez. However, as to your question, if the Marlins offered us Jose Fernandez for Espinoza, I'd drive Espinoza to the airport myself. That would be the easiest trade to accept of all time. It's never gonna happen, but anyone would trade Espinoza for Jose Fernandez

Don't forget to pick up Fernandez inbound for the trip back.

Kiley cautious: www.fangraphs.com/blogs/kiley-mcdaniel-prospects-chat-9115/Comment From Forsyth Anderson Espinoza: Top 15 prospect next season? Top 20? What are your thoughts on him? Kiley McDaniel: Well I focus more on what he is now than guessing what my eval will be a year from now, especially with young hard throwing pitchers, the riskiest group of prospects in baseball. He’s top 100 or just misses at this point. Would be a top 10 pick in the draft and that’s generally where those guys will be/are ranked the winter after being drafted. They can jump 50 or so slots up/down based on the first full year, so you can kinda do the math as far as what to expect rankings wise.

Kiley hasn't seen him in person yet. Expectations and evaluations tend to change when people get a firsthand look at him. Take Ben Badler and Josh Norris for instance....

Found this over on SOSH in the Anderson Espinoza prospect thread. Appears to be the full start of the GCL semi-final.

So Espinoza will get maybe two starts, one scheduled and one if they make the playoffs. Curious to see if he does go five (or more). I wonder how quickly he could make Salem next spring if he has a very strong start. Seems at least a good bet to make high-A or even AA next summer. Also wonder how much work they'll have him do in instructs.

They can jump 50 or so slots up/down based on the first full year, so you can kinda do the math as far as what to expect rankings wise. While no RH HSer has ever gone first in the draft, after Espinoza's performance in the GCL (particularly sustaining his velocity in the mid to high-90s), I think "top-10" is a **very** conservative estimate of where he would have gone in the draft. Then again, those numbers are post-draft, so who knows. But at the age of a HS junior, he dominated much older competition and flashed a 70+ FB and two 50 secondaries, with terrific pitchability. I've got to think that puts him top-3 on the conservative end. Kiley's ranking seems awful low, considering, say, Kolek's showing so far. He seems to have stuff nearly on a par with Gerritt Cole when he was drafted, (or Trevor Bauer) and Cole was four years older. Plus, his first pro performance was nothing short of stellar. Heck, Trey Ball made some top-100s after 2013, and he didn't show nearly what Espinoza did. All academic I suppose...after next year I expect he'll be top-10, though he'll have to battle Moncada and Devers for space...

There just haven't been enough eyes on him yet, as someone alluded to upthread. Not a lot of these prospect nerds (I say that as a term of endearment) get down to the GCL. The ones that have seen him, like BA, are gushing. By this time next year I suspect the hype will have really blown up.

My god. Watching that literally terrifies me. The scouting reports scare me, the video terrifies me. I'm gonna go ahead and say that Anderson Espinoza is the best thing that has ever happened to www.soxprospects.com. Never seen a Red Sox prospect like this in my lifetime. I hate that I'm gonna spend the next 3 years praying for this kid's arm not to break.

Remember at the start of the year when Greenville was ranked as one of the best prospect teams in the minors. Then they added, Moncada... Then they added Benintendi.... Then they added Espinoza. And Kopech is suspended. This team right now is ridiculous.
Espinoza seems to be on the fast track. His third level this year, + skipping one entirely. Need a "which prospect makes the majors first" poll, tough call with Moncada, Benintendi and Espinoza.

"Happy Buchholz Day!" the gameday threads would read. Buchholz' minor league numbers were absurd. He had a 1.77era and a strikeouts per nine of *twelve* his first go around in Portland. Really wish B-Ref had his game logs from that year. It was a super exciting time. Now, I'm not saying that can't or won't be in Espinoza's future, but no, he's not the best pitching prospect we've seen here at SoxProspects.com.

At the same time, I don't think we've had a pitcher reach full-season A ball at age 17, much less one with the kind of scouting reports and accolades Espinoza is receiving. I agree it's too soon to anoint him the "best pitching prospect we've seen" at Soxprospects (and believe me, I'm really trying to keep my hopes and expectations in check here), but this does appear to be new territory.

My excitement started when I saw those videos of him pitching at 15. I'm already far gone in containing excitement and think he's the #1A prospect for the Red Sox.

His height worries me health wise, but he's athletically built and i don't see anything but fluidity with his arm and body, so could be a lot worse. Also seems inevitable that every young pitching star has to sustain and recover from a serious injury these days.
Makes you realize what a hellish scenario Stroman tearing his ACL was, because he still could sustain an elbow injury too and miss another year. Luckily for Toronto they'll still make the playoffs without him playing in the regular season and Stroman should be pitching in October.
Health is the biggest risk with him though. Because the stuff is unreal. I know GB rate in the GCL probably has little to no predictive value, but if he continues to be a ground ball pitcher combined with the swing and miss potential he has, we're certainly taking about a frontline starter.
