What I think about Shaw is exactly what I thought - and expressed here - about Middlebrooks when he first came up to MLB and was crushing it. They have to figure out exactly what they think he is by the end of the year and act accordingly. Or as I said about Middlebrooks, they needed to figure out of he's Evan Longoria or Brandon Inge. I realize that Middlebrooks was younger then and had a more impressive minor league record, but it's the same type of drill. These are the tough decisions/evaluations front offices get paid to do I think you've raised a good point here, except that Shaw is essentially the anti-Middlebrooks. The need to make a decision on a prospect at this point in their career -- having early MLB success -- is a function of two things. 1) Perceived ceiling. Not the actual ceiling that you, as someone who knows him well, have determined, but the ceiling that others GMs see. Reputation, largely. Because this determines his present trade value. 2) Actual floor. Because this is the worst-case scenario should you keep him. Middlebrooks had a high perceived ceiling and (as we have seen) a very low actual floor. It was really important to decide where he would fall between them. Shaw has a very low perceived ceiling and a high floor. He's the last guy you have to worry about selling high on. Just start using him off your bench and see how good he can make himself. (Furthermore, the actual ceiling, if I'm right about the streakiness, is way higher than almost any GM would guess.)

I really don't think he'll be much more than 260/20/85 with his share of doubles and walks, with some solid defense. In Boston it won't fly. Sounds good to me, especially for the league minimum. I meant he won't get there in boston, i don't think. the posts were meant more of his production this year projects to possibly that (in some teams eyes hope fu lly) and DD would use him as a terrifix chip. I can see why you and every one else misunderstood me. my bad

shaw has impressed me with the abiity to lay off tough pitches from lefties and woek counts against high octane guys. (severino, kluber, dude last night). I really don't think he'll be much more than 260/20/85 with his share of doubles and walks, with some solid defense. In Boston it won't fly. it didn't for daubach (much worse on d) but that's a chip that some national league team will give us some power arms and/or a starter for in a package. hmmm I choose andrew cashner Thats pretty optimistic, even for upside let alone a projection. That would definitely fly given the alternatives option next year, but I don't think anyone would realistically expect that level of production.... you misunderstood. me. I meant his explosion late this year may halt before he slides and some tdam may see that projection in him. it won't fly in boston meant he won't get to those numbers playing for Boston IMO

Of course it would fly. sigh read posts directly above

60% chance Cashner gets hammered in this division. is that better or worse than running joe kelly out there every 5th day?

Kelly has shown what his ceiling could be as a SP is he can harness his remarkable repertoire. For whatever reason, as a still young/inexperiened SP, he has recently shown that he MAY finally be figuring it out. As with EDRod, Owens, Johnson, Wright ... AND Porcello, this is the time to wait patiently and see how this develops. The offseason is very near and data is needed.
