Betts was 20th among all hitters in fWAR before tonight's game. He could potentially finish top 15 as a 22 year old, wow

Somehow the bullpen kept the Yankees off the board the last two innings, but what a struggle!! Hard to see how the Sox are going to pull this one out. Vision clearing up a bit?! Well, I walked into that one. But the game isn't over yet. The pen still has to get through the bottom of the inning. If the Yankees lose this one, though, ALL the air may go out of their balloon.

It's a longshot, but Mookie could still go 20-20 as a 22-y/o. Beyond that, he's still got a pretty fair chance at 70 XBH. Wow. And to top it all off, if the Sox sweep the Yanks and NY ends up missing the postseason...wow, wouldn't that just be the sweetest icing on a cake that, at times, has been very hard to eat this year? I've got a strong feeling that this team finishes at or over .500, too. Very fun finish to a tough year.

I suppose it's quite possible that the Sox may finish off the sweep, but even so, the teams in back of the Yankees are backing up just enough that they probably can make the postseason even if they don't win another game this week.

While so many so called Sox fans have just tuned out on this team and feel they are a long way away from contending, I am just plain freaking giddy about the future!!! Yes I know the Sox have needs to fill and problems, Sandoval, Hanley, to solve but how can you not be excited about the future? IMO it is a very fun time to be a Sox fan. Optimism is very high for a team that could be very good for a long time. DD is a very lucky man. Please make a few good moves and don't screw up what you have inherited. I remember feeling the same way about the 1966 Sox. Though they had a bad record that year, they came on and looked a LOT better at the end of the year, so that I figured that they could contend in 1967. I also remember seeing the early Las Vegas odds for the various MLB teams to win the pennant and WS, the Sox of course were a real longshot (don't remember what the quoted odds were), but I remember thinking to myself, if I had any money (which I didn't at the time), that is the kind of bet that would be worthwhile to take. Not because I was sure that the Sox would do well that year, but because they were better than the oddsmakers were giving them credit for, so over the long haul bets of this ilk would pay off more than the odds would have you risk, and would thus be a moneymaker (even though I hadn't had a formal statistics course yet, I still sort of sensed the Law of Large Numbers.) Yes. I remember the buzz in 1966 that became the roar of 1967. Even the media got it. This feels like the same kind of youth driven, hope filled, fan-validation that lifted most boats. There are always naysayers, always, but it was harder for them to call the Sox "bums", because even they felt the start of the sea-change. Good memories.

FWIW, really starting to like Shaw for 2016. His minor league #'s were more steady than uninspiring, and he seems to be figuring out MLB pitching. He has a good baseball head, generally making not just good, but smart plays, like his play to 2B tonite instead of a likely miss at home. Good footwork, good glove, a bat which perhaps shouldn't have surprised us so much having put up near 20HR twice, across levels, in the minors, even while adjusting gradually.
He increasingly reminds me of a cooler, drier Youk who has yet to hit his stride. His numbers in about 70 games this year are better than Panda's for the season. Could he hit .275/.350/25HR/30 doubles in a full season and be an average or better defender and solid citizen? I would take the over. Can Hanley or Panda hit much bettercompared, play1B/3B better, be more integral parts of this young team? I would take the under.

.275/.350 with 55 XBH hits sounds like a 4-win player to me if he's an above average glove at 1B. Sounds a little lofty for Shaw. If he can be just an absolutely average player he's worth putting at first and spending the saved money elsewhere.

Ancientsoxfogey, I like betting the over on season wins when a team is underrated. Every season the Pats are a good bet to beat the odds, usually for them its around 11.5 and they usually win 12+. Guessing the Sox will be around 83-85 next yr but that will depend on the offseason. Love the Giardi comments on the OF defense of Bradley and Betts!! Hard to hit them where there not, those guys are everywhere. Love it!!

I suppose it's quite possible that the Sox may finish off the sweep, but even so, the teams in back of the Yankees are backing up just enough that they probably can make the postseason even if they don't win another game this week. Yeah, but it's still pretty sweet to come in, dismantle the Yankees over 4 games and make them back into the playoffs. Getting into the wildcard game on a losing streak isn't gonna feel all that great. Another Rich Hill masterpiece and a solid win would be mighty fine tonight, if it happens.

I'd put an 80% probability that Shaw would be better than Pablo at 3B next season.

And I love how they moved Tanaka up to try to stop the bleeding and it didn't work.

I'd put an 80% probability that Shaw would be better than Pablo at 3B next season. Eh. Pablo's defense is so volatile it's tough to say. We also don't know what Shaw would look like on a 150 game scale at 3B.

Who heard Mookie's story about how he and Blake got pizza before the game, didn't finish it, gave the rest to a homeless guy, then hit two home runs?

This is what rooting for the Sox is supposed to feel like. I am glad that posts have trended towards backing our nine with wanting victories as opposed to higher draft pick. I totally get that may have been a byproduct of frustration and venting, and high draft picks are sexy, but man it feels good to wake up with the victories piling up. And to possibly sweep the Yankees in a late september matchup, I am getting goose bumps just thinking about it.

Speaking of fWAR, looks like I'm comfortably going to win this bet. Since that post, Holt has been +0.4 fWAR (hitting .272/.323/.358, 83 wRC+) and Zobrist has been +0.9 fWAR (hitting .284/.365/.460, 127 wRC+), which is fairly close to what the projection systems suggested they were going to do.

Too bad they don't have "Manager of the Month" awards like the players, 'cause my vote's for Lovullo. I like this quote about JBJ's squeeze play last night: That's great stuff. He doesn't like bunting, and he's a good manager of his players. Two fine qualities in a manager.
