Red Sox to sign David Price

Another prospect I wasted time on learning how to pronounce and spell their name. My new policy will be, If I can't spell it or pronounce it, it's nickname city. Some on staff hate that , so delete away. This is the best grumpy old man post ever. LOL,well done and get off my lawn.

This is the best grumpy old man post ever. It's amazing how many people on this board and SOSH can't spell Sonny Gray correctly. Hey, at least we got rid of Ranaudo AKA Renuado.

David Price absolutely nailed that press conference. He was confident, comfortable, engaging. Teammates, fans, and media will all LOVE this guy.

David Price absolutely nailed that press conference. He was confident, comfortable, engaging. Teammates, fans, and media will all LOVE this guy. Couldn't agree more. Price absolutely crushed the press conference. And after looking at what Greinke got from the D-Backs, I'm pretty sure this deal just turned into a three year deal at pretty descent price/value.

I sure am even gladder now that the Sox nailed Price earlier. Had David waited a bit, the Dodgers or Giants might go 7/220 and Dombrowski will go full on rage mode and offer 8/256.

With 60 million deferred in the Greinke deal, the value is actually 190, 27 mill less than Price. I still think that if the Sox are a good team in 3 years with good young talent coming up and a good future outlook, Price will opt in and stay with them for 32 million per year with no deferments. That is the only part I dislike about the deal is the opt out. By 2018 an ace starter may cost 35 mill per year but it will be interesting to see if Price opts out as a 34 year old.

It's funny though, if the Red Sox weren't involve on Price, his market price would have been lower. It's not like he's going to sit out if no one met his demands. Seeing what Greinke got now I really don't agree with this statement. The Sox were wise to pounce on Price when they did and were fortunate that he agreed to the deal. Right now the Dodgers, not being crazy enough to give Greinke six years, have plenty of money to burn in their pockets, and if Price were on the market, I'm positive they would pounce and that's a bidding war the Sox would struggle with. It's also fortunate that the Yankees were so gluttonous the 2013-2014 offseason that they put themselves in a position that they couldn't go after Price, which is exactly who they need. Whenever the Yankees have been a great team, they always had a great lefty to lead the rotation, from Ford to Guidry to Pettite to Sabathia, and they certainly could have used Price. I'm amazed that three of the Big 4 and especially the top 2 free agent pitchers have signed BEFORE the winter meeting, which has become more of a free agent dog and pony show rather then a trade mart. Being from Nashville, I expected Price to make his decision at the Winter Meetings in Nashville. Instead when MLB interviews him there the first thing they'll say is, "Here's the newest member of the Boston Red Sox, David Price... "

Welcome. In meetings all day, so I didn't see it. It's got to be online somewhere, no? Edit: Found it...

Price came here because the the Sox offered the most money. He will opt out if the market says that he will get more money. Either way the deal looks pretty good now that Greinkes deal look like it does. The big winner in the all may be Jonny Cueto. He's probably looking at 6/150 plus now.

From the Boston Herald: "Conversations with Price’s agent stopped during Thanksgiving, then picked up again immediately afterward. The Red Sox weren’t thrilled about giving Price the ability to opt-out after three years, but if the opt-out is a separator and that’s what the pitcher wanted, the club was willing to provide it."

I know as well as the next guy that things never work out as you envision them for the long run, nevertheless, given their ages and quality, the potential 2018 rotation is mind staggering.

Viz the opt out. If so, the deal would be 3 years, 95 million and we get a draft pick (or did the deal say we cant offer arb?)

Viz the opt out. If so, the deal would be 3 years, 95 million and we get a draft pick (or did the deal say we cant offer arb?) Would be 3/$90m and a draft pick. Haven't been any reports about not being able to offer arbitration. If Price opts out of 4/$127m, the draft pick isn't really going to affect his market, so I doubt he fought hard for that Cespedes-esque clause.

Yeah, I said earlier that I thought Price was a great fit for Boston; he's going to be really popular. Media-savvy, intense on the mound and engaging off it ... let's just hope he stays nearly as good for three years, at least. Look, if we're honest, most of us probably would have been on Price's side of the Ortiz/Price thing if we were fans of almost any other team.

It is now against the rules to include a clause that the player can't receive a qualifying offer.

No, I wouldn't. Price is an annoying baby and I don't feel different because he had a few prepared quips in a press conference. I disliked John Lackey before they signed him, when they signed him, and after everyone started to dislike him for his bad performance, just like they will with Price in a split second if/when he has a down year.

Well, I said "most of us" ... personally, I couldn't care less either way. I find the whole "he pimped the homerun too much"/"I have no respect for him" kind of argument tedious on both sides. But I do enjoy watching Price pitch, and he seems like a decent guy.

I dunno, I tend to favor the side that doesn't say things like, "Hispanic players are disrespecting the game with their 'flair' and should assimilate", but that's just me.
Not that that was necessarily Price's argument. He was just a hypocritical sore loser. Maybe he's learned from it, I guess we'll see. But it would be fun to compare the 2013 ALDS thread to this one.
Sorry, I don't mean to come off as so negative. I don't hate Price or think he's a bad human being. And his niece is adorable.

Price is the EXACT move the Sox needed to make. They will be in contention for the foreseeable future. Not just because of Price but also Kimbrel and the core of very good young players and prospects.

If we're handing out awards I think I deserve the most grateful that Ben is gone one. Where do I pick it up?

"I was just saving all my postseason wins for the Red Sox" - what a great quote.
And after reading all the quotes from former teammates, I'm excited to see how much he can help the younger Red Sox pitchers like ERod, Owens and Johnson.

I don't know, I'd be more concerned if he hadn't shown his passion. Things said right after a big win, or big loss, go in one ear and out the other for me. Too much emotion for the statement to have relevance to much. I really like that he took up the cause for a rookie (Archer) who wouldn't get much traction in a battle of words with a vet like Papi. The Globe ran an interview with Brad Park today where I learned he had FBI protection on his visits to Boston. If we could adopt Park as one of our own, we can adopt Price.
