I'm going to try to provide regular updates, and pictures from the biosphere that is the Gaylord Opryland Hotel. Not sure how much I can get done, but here's a start: This is the lobby where check in occurs. Nothing happening yet, as it's too early for check in, but in 2 hours, this area has every baseball writer in the country present The Cascades Atrium, one of two that house all the food and shopping venues in this monster The Delta Atrium. This is the point where you catch all the writers, staff, and a few ballplayers. Yes, they have a river with boats inside the Delta Atrium MLB Network set, outside convention center Set for the EE, and their in-house network. No NESN present, imagine that! It's Christmas here, and these guys have some of the best decoration. This tree is 60 ft tall, and the wreath is 30 feet wide The posted meeting agenda. When you walk around this complex you understand why the writers and media hate this place, but why baseball keeps coming back. The resort has hundreds of suites to accommodate all the baseball teams, agents, and networks who are here. The rooms are down a labyrinth of seemingly hundreds of hallways that rarely connect to anything other than guest rooms. There's also a huge mall connected to the resort, so baseball people cab get a head start on their holiday shopping. I did note dozens of attendees walking from the resort to the mall. Not much of a start, but there really wasn't much happening yet. I'll get some better shots tomorrow if I can get over there.

“@jeffpassan: From the not-a-surprise department: Multiple GMs say because of the price of free agents, they expect trade action in Nashville to be big.”

I stayed there for a work convention in early 2014. The place is massive.

Lingering feeling that DD makes a surprising trade. Due to the high prices of free agents. I could certainly see DD getting a nice offer on someone and taking it.

If there's a team who would be willing to try Hanley at 3B, it may be the Diamondbacks. Drury didn't look ready and Tomas looked even worse than Hanley used to be at 3B, while being a worse hitter too.

Drury didn't look ready and Tomas looked even worse than Hanley used to be at 3B, while being a worse hitter too. They have Jake Lamb, who was a pretty well regarded as a prospect (top 100 by BA). He had a good season for the D-Backs at third and will be a solid everyday player for them.

gammons maintains that archer is available - what would you give up for him?

Would have been fun to think about a few weeks ago. We'd have to leave our system barren to land a guy like that at this point.

gammons maintains that archer is available - what would you give up for him? Has to make you a little suspicious. The guy is locked up for chump change for the next four years PLUS another two extremely reasonably priced option years. Archer's next FIVE years combined will cost less than Price next year. Why trade that?

It would be costly no doubt, but 5 years of an ace, at a 4.24 AAV still has to be considered. I'd bet the Astros, Rangers, Cubs and Dodgers would be serious contenders for his services.

When Henry was talking about his sales pitch to Price he was mentioning the young core they have now and the guys coming up behind him. They need to keep salaries low to afford guys like Price onto the payroll. They know what they got in those three players I mentioned. I do think that Devers in vulnerable to a deal and I have trepidation about that. I think his LH power hit will develop. He's so young with so much room for growth. I hope the Sox don't deal him, but I don't have the irrational fear that everybody of value in the system gets dealt. I'm not that paranoid.

Are they Dodgers in the verge of signing iwakuma away from the Mariners?

And remember kids, a sharp dressed man brings not one but TWO pieces of luggage to the meetings, but saves his best attire for when he checks into the hotel. P.S. - My apologies if that's you in the picture, Xander. I couldn't help myself.

For those who never really got what went on at the Winter Meetings, ut always was curious. There really is a massive number of people here. Aside from the meetings in suites, and deals getting done, there's a job fair where all baseball teams post their open positions. Thousands of attendees are after these few jobs. There are health, and franchise management tracks that run in the convention center. All kinds of interesting presentations on the health track, with sports psychology usually very prominent. There are many cities represented, trying to lure teams to empty stadiums, and a board that illustrates them for owners of ml franchises. Other than that, it's a lot of press standing around waiting for shreds of news, with an occasional ballplayer, exec, or agent getting stopped for questions. Impromptu interviews pop up many places. It's a good place to chat with media folks about their jobs and thoughts. Sets, and mini reporting stations are set up in various locations. MLB Network is huge this year, in comparison to when here last. Two major sets and I noticed 3 more reporting sets. Reporting sets are just small counters with the logo on the front. The interesting thing about them is they are in the traffic flow, I suppose to capture the essence of what's going on. I didn't see ESPNs set, but I'm sure they'll be set now. Last time they were tucked in down on a lower level, near where I took the pic of the river.
It's a good time, but you have to pick your spots. Don't approach when they are in a group, or with their spouses. Try to catch them when they are walking quietly. Have enjoyed chats with Eades, Verducci, Hetman, Rosenthal, and witnessed Nicks lobby lizard routine first hand. I'll hand it to the guy, he was always on station in the lobby. He may not be the smartest writer in town, but he puts the time in.

Marlins are telling teams any deal has to make them better this year, while offering long term value. They're not looking for prospects.
