JBJ during The Streak, entering tonight (16 games):
.390/.438/.763; .373 ISO, .502 wOBA, 231 wRC+
Add 2 HR and a 2B to this line. hah.

Derek Jeter, career: .310/.377/.440 Xander Bogaerts, 2016: .318/.377/.455 except Jeter played the majority of his career in an insane offensive era. yes, I'm saying Bogaerts is clearly better than one of the 2 or 3 greatest shortstops of all time One of the 2 or 3 most overrated players of all time. Sure he was a great player, but how in the world did he win 5 gold glove awards? Looking at the stats I don't see a single season where he should have even come close. The guy was well below average for his career at SS. So not only might Bogaerts be a better hitter, he is better defensively.

But yeah, 2016 Bogey and it's no contest. He's also arguably at least as good a baserunner.

Jeter's career offensive numbers include some crap years in the end of his career, though. So, let's do an age-appropriate comparison:
Xander, age 23 season (so far): 318/377/455 Jeter, age 23 season: 291/370/405
Oh! Even better comparison ... and, of course, Xander's a lot better defensively. So, clearly, Xander>Jeter
Ok, ok, I'm sorta joking by cherry picking, this was Jeter's lowest SLG until he was 36 years old. And it's 6 weeks of the season for Xander, vs a full season for Jeter. But the original point is true: the comparison isn't outlandish at all offensively, and Xander is such a smart ballplayer, there's a reasonable chance he's still going to get better.

This thread should go into the Soxprospects Hall of Fame for the sheer joy and almost no complaining.

But the amazing thing is that a month from now he might once again be back to a .200 hitter (in real time). We don't know what his "true" level of offensive performance is, and maybe he will never have a "true" level. Maybe he's going to be the all-time streaky player and will never consistently hit what his average stat line shows for any extended period of time. I'm rooting for him to become a poor man's Mike Trout. What better symbol for the Red Sox, since he is a Patriot's Day baby (as was my father)? But who knows?

I'm probably not speaking for many, but I can't help but feel a bit for Prof. Cherington. I'm sure he's happy for "his kids", but at the same time it's got to be a little bittersweet. In so many ways this is his team, and this is what he had always envisioned. Imagine all those private conversations in 2014 with what was probably a disconsolate Bradley and Bogaerts, and doubting his own acumen. Chapeau, Ben He was a bad GM with one outlier year of success and a megadeal that fell in his lap. This isn't to say he didn't make a few good moves, but his early practice of trading valuable position players for relievers made me sour on him quickly. I wish him well but if he was a U.S. president he'd be Jimmy Carter or Franklin Pierce.

And for those of us who were early and frequent JBJ advocates, this is sweet. This team is winning and having fun. And they're fun to watch. As fans we can't ask for much more (although watch, we will, and very soon, too).

Woke up this morning sad we wont be playing Oakland anymore.
On a separate note: does Melvin have a random mop-up man generator in the clubhouse? I can't believe they didnt run out of pitchers in this series.

Man, this offense is good. They destroy anything less than ace stuff. Great fun to watch, and to think they could realistically improve is mind boggling. Although Sonny Gray is not having his typical year, I would consider him a 1A. They ripped through him like wet toilet paper. Interested to see how they do against Keuchel.

This thread should go into the Soxprospects Hall of Fame for the sheer joy and almost no complaining. re: almost no complaining I didn't count, but I recall: how did JBJ not block, catch that (2 occurrences) Why didn't we pinch hit for Hanigan Somethings about O'Sullivan why did we send Porcello out for the 5th. in Boston, destroying another team with 13R+ in each of 3 games is not enough ok, this was probably the fewest critiques in a series thread and to think in the off season that there was talk of trading JBJ for ,

Unbelievable hitting against what presently is a poor pitching staff...perfect storm. Now let's bring back Reddick, stick him in RF and Betts in left. Swihart and Vazquez...Hubba, hubba...
I'm sure there have been but I don't recall anyone for the Sox being as hot as Bradley can get (Lu Clinton?)...Who is ever to really know but a number of us have kept the faith with Bradley from early on.

except Jeter played the majority of his career in an insane offensive era. yes, I'm saying Bogaerts is clearly better than one of the 2 or 3 greatest shortstops of all time Honus Wagner, Cal Ripken, Arky Vaughan, and pre-2004 A-Rod, all say hello. As do Robin Yount and Ernie Banks. Yount played 11 seasons at SS and compiled 50.3 WAR, just south of Jeter's 54.2 in his first 11 seasons. But b-Ref has Yount 5th all-time among SS in JAWS. That's largely on the strength of his 10.5 WAR in 1982. Jeter's high was 8 in 1999. He ranks 12th among SS in JAWS. Banks played eight seasons at SS and compiled a ridiculous OPS-plus of 138 with 54.2 WAR. In his first eight seasons, Jeter compiled 40.7 of WAR, so it's really not close. Banks is ranked seventh in JAWS among SS. Ozzie Smith is 8th among SS in JAWS and Alan Trammell is 11th - both ahead of Jeter.

I wish him well but if he was a U.S. president he'd be Jimmy Carter or Franklin Pierce. He was a subpar GM doing the strictly GM part of the job, but he remained incredibly good at the player development aspect of the job. Which in the long run is quite a bit more important.

Didn't Theo sign/draft; Xander, Mookie, JBJ, Vazquez and Shaw? Hanley and Pedey too.

I guess this isn't quite typical, but still instructive. Josh Reddick has about the 7th most WAR to date from the 2006 draft. That's insane. He's not even that great!! espn.go.com/blog/keith-law/insider/post?id=5177
