Changes in BA's mock:
SD takes Quantrill over Groome CWS takes Collins over Lauber BOS takes Groome as Collins is no longer available.
As noted above, Frankie Piliere doesn't think the Red Sox would take Groome, even if available (and neither do I). Between the maturity issues and the price tag, Groome could absolutely torpedo this draft for BOS.

Lewis falling would be very interesting, but obviously he'd have fallen for a concerning reason. Bad workouts and poor competition are legitimate yellow flags.
I don't think the Sox FO would be stupid enough to let Groome burn them if that was going to be the case.

Yup, this uncertain draft is seeming even more uncertain on draft day.

Who would have thought that there was ANY chance that Perez or Groom would be available at 12 even two weeks ago?

Yeah, we have to make sure we sign all 40 picks and that they all make the majors. No bad picks ever. Not every pick needs to hit, but a top 15 pick? Yeap. Need to hit on this pick. The Sox never get these kind of picks. This is a very important pick. Sorry, but a significant portion of top 15 picks become "misses." Also, we've picked higher than this in 2 of the last 3 years. I hope we don't get to pick this high for a long time, but we kind of can't say that we never get to pick this high anymore.

As it was with Trammell earlier in the week, the pick of Groome by BA seems less about what they are hearing and more about who's next on their list of Top Prospects (this time, they just chose to have Boston take Groome instead of passing up on him).
Or maybe it's just editing.

I'd like this, but only if we can sign him. After that our bonus pool gets pretty constrictive. We either have to punt our 2nd and 3rd round pick and get a few under the radar signings (Red Sox have been good at this in the past, Betts, Lakins, Allen, Ockimey), or sign our 2nd rounder at slot and draft 7 college seniors.

If BA is right and Rutherford is also available, would that be the best choice?

Who would have thought that there was ANY chance that Perez or Groom would be available at 12 even two weeks ago? It's not totally surprising that a top 15 draft prospect failed a drug test, and it's not totally surprising that Groome is slipping. Groome's camp has done a poor job of dealing with the maturity issues, has floated a top 6 signing bonus and has walked away from Vandy in order to pressure the teams. So, not a total surprise.

As a fan who can't see many names past the top 15 though, I like the high risk high reward.

Hopefully we see a Hayden Simpson type pick in the top 10.

Yup, this uncertain draft is seeming even more uncertain on draft day. Credible sources have had Anderson as high as 3 and as low as not in the first round. I suppose that's the equivalent of "With You There to Help Me" or "Locomotive Breath" versus "A Passion Play."

If BA is right and Rutherford is also available, would that be the best choice? Here is my big board from the locked thread: So, Eric, to answer your question, I would still take Groome. He'd be the highest guy on my board. If I could not get ownership to buy into Groome, due to money/maturity issues, I would take Manning (assuming there is some agreement to price, as he is also a signability guy and is supposedly asking for $4.5mm to sign). If Manning doesn't work, I would take Rutherford over Anderson and Collins. Ironically, Groome is probably an easier sign than Manning. There has been some commentary that the Red Sox are locked into a college bat. If that's the case, Collins should be the pick unless Lewis inexplicably slips to them.

Wow, not sure who'd I'd want if both Lewis and Groome fell to 12. Neither is going to happen but man, what a dilemma.

Comment From Tyler M Red Sox have a choice between Zack Collins, Ian Anderson, Blake Rutherford, and Justin Dunn...which do you think they go for? Which would you go for?
Frankie Piliere: I would take Dunn but I think they'd go Collins

From Keith Law: Hearing Senzel in play at 2, Collins at 10, Thaiss at 12, Rutherford maybe hoping to slide into 20s for an overpay.

If you get a 1 or 2 starting pitcher at any pick in the draft, the rest can bomb and was still a good draft.

Hmm, if we pass on Rutherford for Thaiss I'm not going to be a happy camper. Unless he'll go fairly under-slot.

I remember watching Rick Porcello fall in 2007 (old system rules obviously apply).
