Funkhouser, Gallen would be preferred. Krook if they wanted to roll the dice with an upside project. Saw Gallen pitch as a freshman. Excellent command. Would be a solid pick. Just read a scouting report on Funkhouser on BA's site. He's sounds broken beyond repair. Scouts seemed unconvinced he could remain as a starter.

Yeah, this keeps bugging me. I mean, the Cardinals might qualify as small market, but they're contenders every year. So then competitively balanced ? Yea, they have 9th highest payroll at 148 million. I see no reason why they get extra picks every year! I understand teams like A's and Tampa getting extra picks, but not the Cardinals.

Eh, competitive balance picks really should be tied to market size and not payroll or revenue. You want to tie it to the inherent characteristics of the market, not how willing the ownership is to spend or how good of a job the marketing department has done. The fact that the Cardinals ownership/front office has done a great job of cultivating a passionate fan base should not work against them.

The Cardinals are one of the oldest and most storied teams in the sport, and have more titles than anyone not named the Yankees, to treat them the same as small market teams like cleveland and oakland is pretty ridiculous.

Given revenue-sharing and the luxury tax I am of the mind that there are no more "small markets" - just some cheap billionaires.

Stobbe to PHI
8 picks to go until #88:
The top players, according to MLB's rankings, still on the board, are:
34. Jared Horn, RHP, Vintage (Calif.) HS 36. Drew Mendoza, 3B, Lake Minneola (Fla.) HS 39. Corbin Burnes, RHP, St. Mary's 44. Jon Duplantier, RHP, Rice 53. Thomas Jones, OF, Laurens (S.C.) HS 55. Heath Quinn, OF, Samford 58. Kyle Funkhouser, RHP, Louisville 60. Nonie Williams, SS, Turner (Kan.) HS 64. Bryson Brigman, SS, San Diego 66. Zach Jackson, RHP, Arkansas 68. Cooper Johnson, C, Carmel Catholic (Ill.) HS 70. Chad Hockin, RHRP, Cal State Fullerton
One other wildcard is Jesus Luzardo, a Florida HS lefty projected as a first rounder who had TJ about 10 weeks ago. He could probably be signed at slot. One other name to consider is Nolan Martinez, a 17YO HS RHP from California. The San Diego State signee has a three-pitch mix, clean delivery and some projection left.

Because you have one of the 10 smallest television markets. So? If you generate more revenue than teams that have bigger markets how is that a disadvantage? Because it's harder to generate revenue with a smaller market. I didn't write the rules, but that's what they are. Go yell at the clouds.

And they're the first to complain about the system when it (used to) benefit teams like the Sox with the comp picks. Carry on with the draft.

Because you have one of the 10 smallest television markets. So? If you generate more revenue than teams that have bigger markets how is that a disadvantage? Because it's harder to generate revenue in smaller tv markets. They get a bonus for being able to generate more revenue compared to similar markets. Best solution is a salary cap with minimum spending requirements. But I don't see that happening anytime soon

The draft coverage won't play. Just black screen. Mine is doing all right, but the audio on the pick announcements is horrible. The rest is fine. I have to wait until the MLB guys repeat the name for me to get it. I thought that this conference call thing was only for the last rounds.

Braden Webb went to Milwaukee so his medicals were somewhat passable.

College pitcher with some giddy-up would be my guess as the next pick for the Sox
