Q: Hi Keith. What are the makeup concerns about Groome? Is it serious stuff or 17-yr. old immaturity stuff?
Keith Law: To me it's immaturity and idiocy. No violence, no felonies, not a sociopath. I am more concerned about Delvin Perez's makeup than Groome's.

Curse. I was just about to say that I liked Bobby Dalbec having seen him in the Cape League, and now I don't get any credit for having Boston pick him.

Dalbec. Brutal pick. 30 hit tool. He'll never make the majors.

Bobby Dalbec big time power bat, led Cape in HRs, terrible Junior Year. #118 on BA. Nice pick. They are killing this draft so far.

I wonder if Dalbec becomes the next Middlebrooks. Or Trumbo if he hits his ceiling.

Dalbec may be the ultimate boom-or-bust candidate in this draft. He was also Arizona's closer if hitting doesn't work out.

Maybe take solace in the fact that, if we believe he discussion with Chris H, this means Groome is closer to $3Mn than $5Mn???

For all his "power," he hit 6 HRs this year, mostly because he struck out in 35% of his ABs'. The hit tool is --. That's a punt of a pick.

I'd rather take a Boom-Bust, dream on the power bat guy, over another Senior Sign that is getting drafted just because he'll sign for 1K.

I'd rather take a Boom-Bust, dream on the power bat guy, then a Senior Sign that is getting drafted just because he'll sign for 1K. This isn't correct logic though. Have to sign some of those senior guys to sign over-slot players -- which you understand.

I'd rather take a Boom-Bust, dream on the power bat guy, then a Senior Sign that is getting drafted just because he'll sign for 1K. Senior signs aren't completely worthless....consider the success in the minors of Kyle Martin ($10,000 bonus) and Ben Taylor ($10,000 bonus). Both those guys could make it to the Red Sox pen, and Martin is obviously very close to doing so.

I'd rather take a Boom-Bust, dream on the power bat guy, then a Senior Sign that is getting drafted just because he'll sign for 1K. I bet you most teams like that too but they also want to sign the premium guys they took.

They could probably save money with this pick. Perhaps they think they can fix his swing? has upside as a pitcher too....perhaps it's not the worst pick considering the position they are in today.

I'd rather take a Boom-Bust, dream on the power bat guy, then a Senior Sign that is getting drafted just because he'll sign for 1K. He's not boom or bust. He's just bust. Just because he electrified some scouts on the Cape with power potential doesn't mean he actually was good. He still hit .228 that summer with too many Ks. And he did the exact same thing last year on Team USA. The only place his line from this year would be acceptable is the majors. He might be useful as a Danny Valencia type. But if he's doing that in college, it means he's not making it above high-A. Might as well convert him to pitcher now and save him the time.

It also wouldn't be devastating since they would get a good pick in a deep draft in 2017 back anyway. Next year's draft is "always" deep. They said the same thing about this year's draft last year. Next year's draft is always "deep," except for those years when it's "weak." What it should be more often is "I don't know," but that never seems to happen.

Frankie Piliere @fpiliered1 7m7 minutes ago #RedSox make a smart moving taking a shot on Bobby Dalbec. Boom or bust but huge 65 all fields power when he's right. + arm, 91-93 on mound
JJ Cooper @jjcoop36 9m9 minutes ago Red Sox's bet on Bobby Dalbec's power. Horrendous junior season. Don't look at the stats, but great Cape.
***
There is some thought that Arizona's new manager tried to change Dalbec's swing and that the Red Sox will have to rebuild the swing.

I'd rather take a Boom-Bust, dream on the power bat guy, over another Senior Sign that is getting drafted just because he'll sign for 1K. Perhaps but the Red Sox are going to have to save some room for Groome's overslot salary. They haven't drafted anyone who's signing below slot yet.

Dalbec seems a bit like a Dombrowski high risk-high reward pick. Seems a bit inconsistent with our prior drafts but who knows...
I have to lean towards sharing Temple's sentiments. That k-rate seems just too horrendous to overcome.
