I'd rather take a Boom-Bust, dream on the power bat guy, over another Senior Sign that is getting drafted just because he'll sign for 1K. Perhaps but the Red Sox are going to have to save some room for Groome's overslot salary. They haven't drafted anyone who's signing below slot yet. And I'm sure they will save money in the next few rounds, but at the same time at this point we might be overrating how much money they need to save to sign him. With Groome's quotes, the fact the Red Sox "weren't surprised to land him" according to Rickard, then I'm we know they've planned things out down to the last cent and now it's playing out. Ultimately I think Groome signs for 4 million which if you take our slot and the 5% overage means we don't have to sign that much more. Even if it's 4.2-4.3 we can save that in the next round or two.

The draft needs overhaul, draft pool needs to go. All other major sports draft it's all about picking right players, not what will they sign for. I get this was first step from free spending no limit drafts, but it's time for the next step. No one spends over 5% of draft pool, so you have created a set amount per draft.

My bad. I misunderstood something the MLB Network guys said about last year as junior. Less interested then. But they should save some money here.

To be honest, these are better players than I expected.

So if all these guys are slot guys, the Sox are running out of picks to save money.
Perhaps they knew/think they could get Groome for a lower price tag than we are assuming? Or maybe they think they can sign some of these guys for below slot.

Damn, maybe they've talked with Groome and his bonus demands aren't as high as some have floated.

Not that I dislike any of the picks 2-5, but it does seem that the number we picked the player was better than the ranking of the player. Therefore, I'd be disappointed if they all made slot.

I think thats only true for Rounds 2-3....Dalbec and Shawaryn generally rank at or ahead of their drafted position #.

Alex Speier @alexspeier 2m2 minutes ago For now, Red Sox have stayed in the college junior demographic - not a run on $-saving college seniors. Interesting.

Unless some of these guys are signing for a much lower bonus than expected, I don't think they can offer Groome more than 4 million. And that will continue to go down if they don't start signing 100K guys.
Note: I did the math very very very quickly

Damn, maybe they've talked with Groome and his bonus demands aren't as high as some have floated. Or maybe they talked to him and don't like there chances of signing him freeing up that slot money Expect Rickard came out last night and basically said they know what it takes to sign him and they're encouraged he'll sign. Guys, they know what the price tag is and they are drafting accordingly today. No conspiracy theories or sky is falling rhetoric needed.

And that will continue to go down if they don't start signing 100K guys. Note: I did the math very very very quickly They basically need three senior signs in rounds 6-10 to get to $4mm (need to save approx. $650k, incl. 5% overage). 1 - $3,192,800 6 - $281,100 7 - $210,700 8 - $180,300 9 - $168,400 10 - $157,200 1, 6, 8 and 10 (assuming $10k senior signs) gets to $3,781,400 + $190,570 = $3,971,970, plus they can use the 5% overage from the other slots.
