9/27-9/29 Red Sox @ Yankees Series Thread
|
Post by Coreno on Sept 29, 2016 0:18:55 GMT -5
Ugh, that was awful. Let's focus on the positives here shall we: Buchholz pitched very well and it bodes well for the post-season. Kimbrel sucked, but he's had a very inconsistent year all along, so let's hope this gets his bad game out of the way. The Jays also lost a game where they had a lead in the 9th so at least we're not alone tonight. Kelly got 2 big outs with the bases jacked and no outs, of course the HR happened and it was awful but dude was ice cold otherwise. The fact that the Yankees got the payback for that Hanley game is bad, but we can get a bigger payback and officially eliminate these motherf**kers tomorrow in their house with Hank Owens on the mound for the added insult. And the Red Sox have been streaky all year, so let them get their losing out of their systems before the post-season when the games matter again. Major shoutout to my man John Farrell for becoming the first Red Sox manager since Joe Morgan to win 2 AL East titles. I know a lot of you deeply dislike him and will try to tell me that the team won despite of him, but save it. Dude's awesome and win or lose the team is always in the game and always have a big fight. Very happy to see him beat that awful disease and come back and just deliver. I'm really hoping we get a World Series against the Giants, that would be a terrific way for David to retire, beating the one team with as many WS titles as he has this century. I actually have to admit that Farrell gained a bit of my respect tonight. His in-game management is atrocious, but tonight I watched some of the locker room celebration and it was pretty evident how good he is at rallying the troops and keeping these guys in a good mindset most of the time. I still think the strategy end of things hurts him too much to make him that good of a manager, but his managerial talents probably are more of the things we cant see, like managing the clubhouse.

No. I think there is real cause for concern regarding Kimbrel's continued loss of control. He's not the elite closer he was from 2012 through 2014. Since his last horrible "cant find the plate" outing, Aug. 9th, he had walked 4 batters. Well, let's see. That would make it 7 walks and 2 HBP in 16 innings. That's really terrible.

I would love to see the Giants in the World Series because it would mean that the Cubs didnt show up for the second straight year. It would be a joy to see that happen they have been the favorites to win it all this whole season.

Man....when I read these posts, I wonder if I am reading posts from fans of the team or spoiled rotten children. The guys played 157 games entering last night...won 92 of them...so they could have the luxury of "backing" into the division title. Also, who cares at bout crushing the Yankees season....it was already crushed when we swept them last week. Our guys made them irrelevant. Hating on Kimbrel. Important to remember...this the last leg of another long road trip...their 3rd in the last 6-7 weeks.
I want to the guys to keep winning because winning baseball games is what this is all about. And I would like them to be the #1 seed. However, they just won the division....I am ecstatic for the FO, players, fans. What a great year this has been thus far.

I've written this before, but it bears repeating, it's not difficult to foresee how this season ends for the Red Sox.
P.S. And never ever trade legitimate prospects for a reliever

That's a good thing. You want the #2 seed. Agreed. I don't want to have to play Toronto the last three of the year and then play them again to start the post season. And, the Sox played well on the road this year if they end up facing Texas' home field advantage. I disagree with all of this. If Toronto really is that scary, wouldn't it make more sense to play them in the first round and only face their best starter once? I mean, the Red Sox will have to beat them at some point in the postseason anyway, why not get the Blue Jays at a disadvantage? When you have a chance to grab home field throughout the playoffs, you go for it. It's never a bad thing. I don't understand everyone's argument for not wanting the Red Sox to have home field in the ALCS because you're afraid of Toronto.

Shit loss, but I suppose it's better to get these kinks out now, and to remember that this team is mortal prior to the postseason. What's frustrating is that one could see pretty quickly that it was one of Kimbrel's spaz outings. Why wait so long to let him totally implode?

Reset for Thursday:
BOS has clinched the AL East and, with it, a top three seed. BOS is effectively two games behind TEX and two games in front of CLE with four games remaining, so they are essentially locked into the #2 seed. Magic number to clinch #2 seed is 3.
Overall AL standings:
TEX --- (TEX wins the tiebreaker, either based on division record)
BOS -1.5
CLE -2.5 (BOS wins the tiebreaker based on head-to-head)
THURS: CLE@DET (Merritt), TEX off, BOS@MFY (Owens) FRI: CLE@KC (Tomlin/Plutko), TB@TEX (Darvish), TOR@BOS (Porcello) SAT: CLE@KC (Bauer), TB@TEX (Lewis), TOR@BOS (Rodriguez) SUN: CLE@KC (Plutko/Tomlin), TB@TEX (Perez), TOR@BOS (Price)
ALDS begins the following Thursday, with Porcello and Price pitching games 1 and 2.

A good night's sleep works wonders....woke up to realize we clinched. That nasty ending of last night's game will be quickly forgotten - four games to tune things up and work out some kinks (Xander, JBJ and Leon finding their swings - consistently - again would be great).
I have a good feeling about this team. Optimistic that we get to the series - and that long awaited Fenway Wrigley masterpiece.

Don't tell me Kimbrell can't pitch in the rain, either.... May not mean a whole lot, but Kimbrel is an Alabama kid who played his HS, JC ball in 'Bama. Only postseason ball was in St Louis, LA, & SF. He has probably not pitched in too many cold weather games. Also, I'm sure NESN was holding their breath as Papi was slinging the F bombs in the clubhouse last night.

Will be interesting to see how these next few games playout with a 1 game lead on Cleveland for the 2 seed with 4 to go including 3 against the Jays who are fighting for their lives.

I would love to see Joe Kelly get save by final out for big win but not happened. Not his fault as Craig lose his control for second time against the Yankees (actually 4 & 3 walks). Of his 55 appearances, he gave up 2 walks for only 4 times and 3+ walk only twice (see above). The positive is we don't have to face the Yankees again until next season (2017). They gave Craig more trouble with their bat discipline.

And never ever trade legitimate prospects for a reliever Look....you can argue about the "elite" tag if you want...with Uehara, Tazawa, and Carson Smith all going down this year, the trade was fully functional and helped them get to where they are now. You're saying you'd trade that package for bullpen depth? The entire point of the trade was to obtain a closer who would be a guaranteed save sort of guy, a guy who essentially made every post-season game an 8-inning game. A guy like that is a real weapon in the playoffs. Teams start pressing in the plate as early as the 7th. If you get that guy, and he has that kind of post-season and you win the WS, given our farm system depth, it's a fully defensible trade. The thing is, Kimbrel had been that guy before 2015, but less so each year, and then in 2015 he wasn't that guy. DDo's first task as GM was to use all the info available to him and decide whether that declining trend would reverse, flatten out, or continue. If it reverses, it's a good trade. If it flattens out, it's a bad trade. If it continues, it's an awful trade. I actually started a popular thread (Under the Radar Hopes and Fears) because I feared that the trend would flatten out, and that we paid all that to get a merely good closer, a solid, competent guy but nowhere near the guy you paid for. What happened instead, of course, is that the trend continued. He declined further. He's been a below-average MLB closer (17th in fWAR among relievers with 10+ saves) and, even adjusting for a Hanley error that cost him .50 WPA, not among the 35 most valuable relievers in MLB despite the high leverage he's been used in. I'm going to run the full bullpen stats as soon as the season ends, three ways -- full year, since Bannister took over, and since 9/1. I suspect they will show that Kimbrel, who was supposed to be a top 3 reliever in MLB, is arguably not a top 2 (or even 3) reliever on his own team. Uehara is clearly a better option for closer right now, and Ziegler and Kelly might be as well. And yet Kimbrel appears to be useless in a setup role. You're stuck with him as closer, and that means that in deciding to trade that package rather than sign a FA setup guy, you actually made the team less good (at least for the post-season).

I know that his on-game strategy and especially his usage of the bullpen is more often than not less than ideal, but I'm a big fan of him because of how ready everyone looks in most games. They take a hard loss and come back fighting and the players spirit always seem high. Just no quitting regardless of what you throw at them. I love it!

Tonight's line up - work on the game, or give it a rest? Let Hanley swing for his 30th? See of Moncada can make contact? How about Hanley, Deven, Marco, Yoan in the IF, Christian catching, Benny, Chris and Brock in the OF, Travis as DH - Owens pitching. Why not? (am I kidding....or serious?!)

How crazy would it be if Hank just absolutely dominates this lineup tonight?
I mean it's more likely that he looks like Kimbrel circa last night, but hey, a boy can dream.
