I've written this before, but it bears repeating, it's not difficult to foresee how this season ends for the Red Sox. P.S. And never ever trade legitimate prospects for a reliever Couldn't agree more, about the trading prospects for a reliever part. I've felt this way for years. Relievers should consist of your failed starters, flame throwers, and additional guys who you acquire cheaply (Koji) or via trade (example: Ziegler, has been great, acquired for nothing). Reading Moneyball a few years back made it clear to me that giving significant money or prospects for a relief pitcher is completely futile. Yet, the Sox can't seem to grasp that. Here is a reason why relievers don't start: they're not as good. No matter how "good" they are, they tend to randomly implode or completely lose effectiveness without any sign or cause. Relief pitchers are always a liability. What really bothers me about the Kimbrel trade is that they easily could have gotten an effective starter for the prospects they gave away. None of those players they traded have a clear path to the MLB roster. Im sure that a solid #3, maybe 2 starter could have been acquired with those prospects. Four prospects for a closer? Seriously? Starters are significantly more valuable. Seriously, good bullpens don't take as much as one would think to build. It looks like we could have a repeat Heathcliff Slocumb trade, except this time the Sox are on the wrong side of it.

Tonight's line up - work on the game, or give it a rest? Let Hanley swing for his 30th? See of Moncada can make contact? How about Hanley, Deven, Marco, Yoan in the IF, Christian catching, Benny, Chris and Brock in the OF, Travis as DH - Owens pitching. Why not? (am I kidding....or serious?!) It'll be John Farrell GetAway Day™ + Hung Over Veterans = We're taking a knee.

And so the line up
Aaron Hill 3B Andrew Benintendi LF Xander Bogaerts SS David Ortiz DH Chris Young RF Jackie Bradley Jr. CF Ryan Hanigan C Travis Shaw 1B Deven Marrero 2B
I would think a night off for Bogaerts and Bradley would have been good - but what do I know. Would also like to see Vazquez getting bat time instead of Hanigan - a hint for the PO roster perhaps?

Maybe he gets up once or twice, and if he gets a hit Farrell takes him out for a PR. Agree that Bogaerts & Bradley having a night off would be good. I'm sure they will over the weekend. Won't be surprised if he's not in the starting Lineup tomorrow.

You're saying you'd trade that package for bullpen depth? The entire point of the trade was to obtain a closer who would be a guaranteed save sort of guy, a guy who essentially made every post-season game an 8-inning game. A guy like that is a real weapon in the playoffs. Teams start pressing in the plate as early as the 7th. If you get that guy, and he has that kind of post-season and you win the WS, given our farm system depth, it's a fully defensible trade.Bolded and underline = TBD. In the end, I am only talking about the 2016, I won't (and neither should anyone else) evaluate the trade on a purely performance basis for a couple of years. Your moving the goalposts here...but I'll streamline...IMO, there is probably an 75-80% chance the team doesn't clinch at this point in the season, without this trade, because of all the bullpen injuries and underperformance. His bad numbers have been skewed by inconsistancy, more than anything else. When he is on, he is a top 2 closer in baseball.

The Yankees will be happy to sweep this series on his behalf. I like to see David hit HR as last time there.

I always find a reason to watch. Tonight it will be to see how Owens does...will Benny get some hits? Xander and JBJ and Travis find their strokes? Papi sting the Yanks one more time with a homer? The prospect of watching Hanigan and Marrero at bat...not so much.

Very excited here. tonight should be the night I lose my "rookie" status on this board...I will try to not be too chatty in the effort to get there! By the way, I am really enjoying being a part of this site. Love the differing views and opinions and civil nature of the discussions.

Not to say something completely cynical after that Xander strikeout, but he basically jumped back on two pitches right down the heart. Does he need contacts/glasses?

I didn't see the Yanks tribute to Ortiz. Was it cringe-worthy in any way?

Not based on anything in particular I've seen recently, but I'm in the camp that thinks Owens figures it out next year and contributes in the bigs

I think that they should hang in there with Owens in terms of continued development - he's got the stuff (not quite orthodox for someone of his size) - Pomeranz-ish - but perhaps because he is home-grown, I'd be inclined to root for him making good...and packaging off Pomeranz or returning him to the pen (can you tell I am not particularly a fan of the Pom?).
He just needs to be able to find the plate more consistently. Aside from the walk, looking fine tonight.

It's a broken record, but when Hank hits the mitt, he gets guys out. Only one more option, so may run out of time for the Red Sox to wait for him to refine his command. But he's got the stuff
