Steve Selsky in at 3B right now. I wonder if he has a real shot to make it out of spring training over Rutledge?

Who plays SS if Bogaerts goes down for any length of time? Holt is like a 1-week solution at best. Can Marco Hernandez play SS? Marrero doesn't seem like an answer. I was thinking Zach Cozart; the Reds have been openly trying to move him for a long time; terrific SS (but has never played anywhere else in the majors), $5m, final year before FA. Presumably could platoon with Sandoval at 3B, would be a big upgrade over Rutledge; would put the Red Sox close to the CBT though; would Owens be enough? Probably not. Marco's defense is a little shaky, but he's more than adequate for a fill in. He's got the arm and range. I have a feeling they would go to Holt a lot though if Xander would go down. I agree with you- Holt.

Depends on how he looks and if somebody comes calling about Rutledge. I'd think you're right, though, Selsky can be stashed and if they want him to get reps at 3B, then AAA is the place for it. Kinda liking him myself, though, his OBP in particular and fairly solid minor league track record overall has me intrigued.

Have him get more time there in AAA while moving him around first and the outfield to prepare him for a utility role

Just to be clear though, the Selsky and Rutledge bench situation is one of the last position battles in camp. Really the rest of the roster is pretty much set.

Funny how strong Gammons continues to be on Marco Hernandez: www.gammonsdaily.com/peter-gammons-7-questions-to-be-answered-by-2017-red-sox/"...offensively and defensively they should be excellent and, with first baseman Sam Travis in Pawtucket and the multi-positional 24-year old Marco Hernandez growing into an important contributor, they have positional depth.... I’m not alone—Hernandez has been the camp story, 4.0 to first, outstanding defense at second and adequate at short and third. Coaches compare his swing to Bernie Williams."

is this a reliable report of his speed? Sox Prospect says "Solid-average speed." The list below is cautiously sourced: m.mlb.com/news/article/165096680/billy-burns-leads-statcast-speed-rankings/Best home-to-first averages on "competitive plays" (minimum 3 qualified plays) 1. Burns, LH, 3.85 seconds 2. Gordon, LH, 3.91 seconds 3. Hamilton, LH, 3.95 seconds 4. Delino DeShields, RH, 3.96 seconds 5 (tie). Jose Altuve, RH, 3.98 seconds 5 (tie). Ichiro Suzuki, LH, 3.98 seconds (at 41 years old!)

Pomeranz being taken out of the spring training game and was pointing to his elbow when he was taken out. Something major to watch out for imo.
Left tricep tightness. The tricep is connected to the elbow....err not good.

Pablo, Marco especially today, and Vazquez playing well looks like such a good sign.
Our defense was so good last year, and although Sandy played well defensively I think CV is an exceptional defender. Feels like it won't happen but I wish they would stick with Marco and let Rutledge go back to Colorado, since I believe in Pablos' resurgence. Here's to the defense being even better this year

Selsky airmailed a throw from 3B and admittedly said he needed to work on his throws from 3B. So that kind of answers that question whether Selsky will be ready at 3B for the start of the year.
The job will probably go to Rutledge for the backup 3B spot.

My guess is he winds up on the DL, and will eventually come back and be lousy, and then eventually will need a surgery that will pretty much wipe out the rest of his contract time with the Red Sox. I hate the Espinoza/Pomeranz deal more and more each day and I was livid the day they made that deal. When all is said and done my guess is we'll talk about Pomeranz the way we talk about 2013 Jake Peavy, that he kept them from running worst starters out there and helped keep the Sox afloat in a division race. But at least Peavy only cost them a serviceable player. This will cost the Red Sox a lot more dearly in the days ahead. Nothing like Dombrowski and his short term/tomorrow will never come type of thinking.

Whats especially atrocious is they were given the opportunity to rescind the trade and didn't.

Ichiro Suzuki, LH, 3.98 seconds (at 41 years old!) Probably hand-timed vs. electronic timing. In HS/collegiate track, the standard is to add 0.24 seconds to hand-timing to account for reaction. So maybe it's more like 4.24?

The Sox will need starts from the 5th starter on April 12th, April 18th, April 23rd, and April 30th.
At worst one of Pomeranz or Price should be ready by the 30th of April. At best one or both will be ready by April 18th or 23rd.
That means you need 2-3 starts from Kyle Kendricks. The teams he'd be facing is Baltimore then Toronto then Baltimore again and then the Cubs (hopefully they don't need him by this point).
Needless to say the Sox better score during these Kyle Kendricks starts and they get Price or Pomeranz back asap. If not then Kendricks is facing some of the best offenses in baseball during this stretch.

Whats especially atrocious is they were given the opportunity to rescind the trade and didn't. To literally add insult to injury here, soon to be 19 year old Anderson Espinoza was reportedly spotted hitting 98 mph on the radar gun recently in spring training. What a horrible horrible trade.

JBJ not looking to good at the plate. Can this team afford to carry a line up with 2 (JBJ & Vazquez) and possibly a total of 4 (Panda & Moreland) hitting .250 or less? I know Panda & Moreland have looked good but I am not a believer.

I know there's not much room for him on the major league roster to start the year but I'm impressed with Hernandez. I hope they have him start playing in the outfield when he's in AAA. Could be a nice replacement for Holt in the next year or so if he can become a super utility bench player

Favorably or unfavorably? Hopefully, in that middle period. When he was good he was very good.
