Ozuna is the guy I want from Miami. Fenway dead pull homerun hitter. He's only controllable for 2 years and there's a great chance he gets traded this off-season.

I'm not really in an offseason mindset yet, so I haven't starting going through and considering who realistic options are and what they might cost. But in general I'm going to be wary of acquiring anyone who had a big power spike this year, because my guess is they'll fix the baseball and HR/FB rates are going to drop back to normal. Bour fits this profile, Ozuna might, and JD Martinez is probably going to be more expensive than I'm thrilled about.

I wouldn't be so quick to trade Porcello. His durability is huge when 3/5s of the rotation is Price/Pom/E Rod. Heck the 6th and 7th as of now would be Wright and Johnson. Throw in that we could be looking to replace Price and Pom after next season without an obvious replacement beating down the AAA door.

I am working under the premise that ownership wants to stay at or near the salary cap. If a large majority of the salary savings from Young, Moreland, Holt, Ross and Reed will be allocated to the arbitration players, how do we go out and sign a JD without blowing past the cap? Many of our high salaried guys are unmovable, others are key pieces for next year. This is why for me Porcello is the player that should be shopped even though I have my doubts about his trade value. For me, his contract is not an asset but a liability. This is why IMO the solution is not simple at all and it may be a very quiet and frustrating winter. JD will be very expensive in dollar terms and/or trading for a low cost, productive, controllable player will be very expensive in prospect terms.

Im thinking it might be best to sign JD Martinez and Jay Bruce...Then trade Bradley or keep him as a fourth outfielder. If you can pull it off. They need to go over the luxery tax this year.

I'm not for trading Bradley unless he's part of a Stanton deal. IMO you're right in that they need two impact power hitters. The current lineup doesn't have someone that the opposing team would pitch around. The Astros lineup was tough because it seemed like everyone coming to the plate could go yard. The Yankees have Judge and Sanchez. I don't think any of the B's will be consistent enough of power hitters to scare opposing pitchers. I think JDM could be your DH and they would need to find a power hitter either at first base or OF. Either way, trade or signing, they should be prepared to break the luxury tax threshold.

Listening to some of the local sports shows, and doing some reading, there are some calls to pull a Celtics-style "blow the team apart" approach - that the Sox are playing an outdated form of small ball, and they have to use a different approach to get beyond the "very good team but not quite" level. I think that it is going to be a fascinating off-season...and we will have quite the discussions here, with the huge range of opinions. The key may be not overreacting to great players having off seasons (Xander, Mookie). Also, the managerial decision (keep or fire Farrell...and if he goes, who comes in?) will be very interesting to watch. Hoping for a huge win today that fires them up and off to more wins, no matter what. They got completely screwed when the league decided to go for the juiced ball again. Probably need to transition to drafting and developing guys who are bigger than 5'10". The team that just eliminated us has star player eye level with Fred Patek as it's star player. Listed at 5:6 probably 5:4. If you can hit, you can hit, case in point.

I think they do have a guy the opposing team would pitch around- his name is Devers. And I do not think they are going to take on two big additional salaries. Just another reason to hate whomever thought it was a good idea to sign the Panda. While I think that Devers is a middle of the order hitter (and that we have to hope that the B's will all have better years next year) I am not convinced that Devers is a Major League third baseman, despite the act that he works hard at it. Is Toronto in rebuild mode? Is Donaldson available? I would like a lineup that had Donaldson at third and Devers at DH or first. I know it would mean giving up more of the farm system, and we would have to be sure we could resign him, but that might help defensively and offensively. Otherwise, I think JD Martinez as a free agent seems like the best option, but one that many teams will be looking at.

Based on what I have read Jeter wants to cut payroll (meaning he'll be as bad of an owner as Lurie). Rumor has them moving Stanton but I think he ends up in LA. Him for Puig and a package might placate some of the natives down there.

Throw in that we could be looking to replace Price and Pom after next season without an obvious replacement beating down the AAA door. I would agree in that whatever Porcello is during the regular season (my running joke to friends was that he was a Cy Young as much as the Celtics were the #1 team in the East...), he's durable and can be good/really good...and you need those type of guys during a 162 game season...and we know he's not going to be a big game post season buy, until he proves he is... But, some positives, Sale/Price going into next season having pitched some big playoff innings...Devers/AB having some big hits in the playoffs...Betts hitting if not being a difference making hitter in the playoffs...I think resigning Nunez is a priority to play everywhere and spell Pedroia...While Stanton would be the dream, i wouldn't mortgage any more of the future to get him as he's just as likely to be hurt for chunks of the season (or worse as he ages) as that's the norm...Need a bat, and while power is crucial, i'd settle for someone who can consistently make contact in a big spot...NYY won a bunch of WS with no 30hr hitters, but instead had a relentless attack throughout the lineup, consistent contact and 4 or 5 guys with 20hr power...but let's face it, this team is built around starting pitching and what this team really needs more than anything are SP's who can pitch 6 or 7 good quality playoff innings instead of this 2IP nonsense...SP, more than lineup, killed the Sox in the playoffs 2 years running...

While I think that Devers is a middle of the order hitter You have to be impressed with Devers, already showing to be clutch in the post season means a whole lot IMO. The two untouchables on the roster should be him and Mookie as far as I am concerned.

My ranking of regulars, from untouchable to jettison - with a space to indicate a rough grouping. And with no regard to contract length or status. I see only three untouchables.
Devers (starter) Betts (starter) Benintendi (starter)
Bogaerts (starter) - lots of work for him to do on that swing...as well as possible work on the injury Bradley (starter) - though the big slumps are worrying Vazquez (starter) Pedroia (starter) - maybe in decline - health? Nunez (bench) - health? Swihart - trade chip? position? Travis (bench) - trade chip? Lin (bench) - trade chip?
Moreland Ramirez (despite the very hot end, I am ready to part with him) Leon (bat this year probably more indicative of what to expect) Marrero (or keep for good D on the bench) Holt (time to go) Davis (rental) Young (please say goodbye)

If Nunez hits the way he did most of his time year he should be kept and play a lot. Pedroia on the down side and injuries will likely continue. Trading Swihart you get pennies on the dollar, maybe that is all he'll ever be worth but his value is rock bottom now. Travis is a guy I really dont think we know if he is a journeyman or another Travis Shaw, and I dont want to find out the hard way.

I don't see why the Red Sox wouldn't be willing to trade Bradley if they made an expensive Of addition? He is the most expendable of the Bs if there is a roster crunch. Especially that he is now in his arb years. And in my senario you would be adding two high priced free agents. Obviously you wouldn't get a great haul for Bradley, but thats not the point. You might be able to get something okay to decent though.

Can we get back to prospects for a second - spec Try Ball. If hes not protected, and I doubt he will be, does anyone see a team taking him thinking Charlie Blackmon? If he stays, is it time to finally admit the kid is just not a pitcher?

Our offseason is very easy:
1.) sign free agent ohtani. He is the real deal! 2.) move devers to first base. 3.) sign a free agent/trade for a power hitting third baseman with tons of October experience, and plays good defense, 4.) sign a lefty reliever.

Im all for Otani its just a crapshoot since its not really about money and so many teams will want him. I certainly think they should try to make a pitch.

Gee, that's not asking a whole lot....
The Sox should see if they can get Erin Andrews to pop out of the dugout clad in a bikini to sweep the bases off during the 7th inning stretch....
I know... I'm showing my age...

If the reset to the Lux Tax happens before the FA market opens then they should be just under, which gives them their reset. But what is really worth buying this year? Hosmer is not a differentiator and was just slightly better than Moreland offensively while stats (Fangraphs) say he’s a defensive liability. And he’ll want years. Even at 28 he’s really only had 2 good years of production.
Martinez may get you close to numbers like you would’ve gotten from Encarnacion but he’s got less of a track record and he may command as many as 5 years which is about 2 too much. Worst of all, no position of need sans a trade of a younger, cheaper, still controllable ball player. (i.e. one of the Bs). And buying either one of them puts you right back above so you’ll likely be over for the real cookout - 2018-19 free agency where Harper, Machado, Kershaw, and to a lesser extent, Donaldson and Grandal, are the real prizes.
I don’t see a slam dunk off season buy this year like I did last year with Encarnacion. I don’t see enough legit prospects to go get Buster Posey ($88+M) or even Freddie Freeman ($86M) even if Sox take on all of their remining salary. The competition would be steep. I think it would be steep for Stanton too, but here Sox would have a chance if they give up significant assets AND take on ALL his salary. And I’m not sure what other high quality salary dumps will be available, unless Cinn would consider parting with Votto ($157M) - again, my sense is you’d have to take all the cash and provide real value as he’s an icon in Cinn. Also, he’d be the oldest under consideration, and that decline, while likely slower, will come sooner rather than later.
Right now I’m at a loss. We may all need to meet in Maui and come up with a plan. Bring your regressions and powerpoint-compatible animations.

To get Stanton we would have to deal signifigant young players from the major league roster. The farm doesn't have enough prospects. The sox are in a bad position because they have a limited window to win with this team before they start having players exposed to free agency. Signing quailty free agents this year is probably the less costly way to get better. I would hate to have to trade Benintendi, Devers, or Betts.

Already looking forward to next year. Three big obvious bats on the market are Hosmer, Martinez, and Stanton (trade obviously). What do you guys think the Red Sox will/should do? Do they get 1 of those? Or do they even get 2? These are 3 people I am very curious to see where they land.
