2018 Red Sox roster building

Already looking forward to next year. Three big obvious bats on the market are Hosmer, Martinez, and Stanton (trade obviously). What do you guys think the Red Sox will/should do? Do they get 1 of those? Or do they even get 2? These are 3 people I am very curious to see where they land. Not completely sold on Hosmer, Stanton makes too much and a trade will cost too much, but I love Martinez in Boston. That’s what I’m thinking. Only thing is Hosmers swing would really play at Fenway and he has great defense. Martinez would have to Dh right?

Two quick ideas besides signing JD Martinez obviously. Why not try to sign Carlos Santana to play 1b and split DH with Hanley . Santana plays a solid 1B with good power numbers and is a switch hitter. Plus walks about as much as he strikes out. If all else fails I’d like to see Castillo as either a chip or part time outfielder . Crazy idea if we are willing to gamble Carlos Gonzalez left hand hitter had a down year but massive power potential in a contract year.

The biggest needs the Sox have are kind of similar to what they needed going into the 2003 season.
They need big-time offense from 1b and DH, two extreme hitters' positions.
Hanley's contract handcuffs them from spending big bucks to fill one of those positions. Likely they'd prefer to keep Hanley at DH if they're stuck with him. I still think a healthy Hanley can be a productive Hanley, but when can you really count on Hanley being healthy?
I can see them going after JD Martinez. I think it would take around 5 years $125 million to land him. He's a possibility.
I think Eric Hosmer, who I know is not a popular choice here, is a legit candidate to come here.
I like Stanton, but like others said, it will take major league pieces, because Chavis as the first piece isn't enough, and the farm doesn't have enough.
I think E-Rod would be a possibility and less likely JBJ.
If I had to guess, Jeter will send Stanton to the Yankees with Clint Frazier headlining the deal for the Marlins.
I would love to see Ohtani be signed, but then again, who the hell wouldn't? Certainly can't count on him coming to Boston, although he'd be my #1 choice.
They definitely can use a starter with Price's health uncertain. That starter might already be on the roster but gambling on Stephen Wright to come back the way he was before his injury might be too much to count on. I don't see the Red Sox having enough to get a top flight starter, and there really isn't one that's a huge difference maker other than Ohtani out there.
The fact of the matter is that the Red Sox had two top flight starters in 2016 who stunk in their post-season starts, and two top flight starters in 2017 who stunk in their post-season starts, not to mention the 2016 top flight starter stinking in his 2017 start and a fill-in starter stinking up his 2017 post-season start just like they had the best closer in the league stink up his most crucial appearance of the season.
The point is getting another great starter wouldn't guarantee anything.
It seems to me the Red Sox have only had major success when they win 95 plus games, and the 3 recent championship teams won 98, 96, and 97 games respectively.
The Red Sox need to get to a higher level, and the team they have right now doesn't cut it.
They need to get a couple of hitters (or less likely have Hanley bounce back), and unfortunately they need to find a 2b as I have a feeling we won't see too much of Pedroia next season, at least not the Pedroia we used to know. Right now Marco Hernandez is the most likely candidate, but here is where losing Asuaje and Dubon hurt.

Would be great if DD could find the next JD Martinez instead of paying full price for one.

A perfect offseason for me would be Otani/Martinez/new manager. Resign Reed, Nunez, & Moreland.
Explore the possibility of moving on from Pedroia, though it appears as though there's a chance he could be out a chunk of the season as he gets as close to 100% as possible.
See if you can dump Hanley, even if you have to pick up half his salary, this only under the assumption that they get the combination of Martinez/Moreland.
Don't really think this club is too far off. They ended up going into the playoffs with an exhausted #1 starter in Sale, a $30M non starter in Price, a nowhere near 100% Pedroia, a nowhere near 100% Betts, and a banged up Bogaerts/Moreland.

You’ve just added 50m+ in payroll. I’d rather move Porcello and dump Hanley. I want payroll flexibility next off-season. I’d be fine. With Otani. 1yr rental at 1b if we dump Hanley. Who the heck would take Pedroia? We’ve got way too much money tied up in dumb contracts. Just stop it

I like the Santana idea a lot. Stay far away from a Stanton deal.
There really isn't a lot about the team that I would really change. Devers is a massive upgrade at 3B, Benny could explode offensively, a healthy X will rebound, Mook will probably put up another 5+ win year. 1B and DH bats are what's most important, I think. Hanley is probably going to be here, like it or not. I love him as a personality and clubhouse presence, less so as a hitter but I don't hate keeping him to DH as long as we get an offensive upgrade at first base. I'd also really try to get Núñez to come back so we have a Pedey buffer. Dustin needs to be given more rest.

Who the heck would take Pedroia? We’ve got way too much money tied up in dumb contracts. Just stop it I get wanting payroll flexibility but you would be weakening the team. Sure if you get Otani you could trade Porcello, but that's a long-shot. Otherwise trading him hurts your pitching depth, unless you think Beeks is ready to start games in the majors. You also won't get much. With Wright coming off injury, Price and Pomeranz being injury risks, you need pitching depth. Hanley is going to require you to eat a ton of his money, with the market for 1B/DH guys. I think a bunch of teams would take Pedroia on that contract, that's why you don't trade him. Knowing DD history I think targeting Martinez is very likely. We should almost hope he does, because otherwise he will make a trade for a big bat. He will make a splash for a big bat, it's like 95% certain with him. Resigning Nunez makes a ton of sense if it's not a huge deal. Reed I would take on a one year deal. Moreland resigning while dumping Hanley makes little sense in my book. Once you made the Sale deal you in a sense went all in, you can't punt another year worrying about contracts and the salary cap or having spending power next off-season. Like it or not it's almost a forgone conclusion they add a ton of payroll this year.

They'll have all the payroll flexibility they want once they breach the luxury tax limit, which they're almost certain to do this upcoming season. If they make the aforementioned moves, there's not really a single spot among starting players that would be in need of a big $ guy. Sure, you at some point they'll have to pay Mookie, Xander, and JBJ, but they're going to go over the tax limit, and likely stay there.
You then have Hanley coming off after '18 (if managed correctly), Porcello after 19, and potentially a Price opt-out. I just don't think they're in nearly as bad of financial shape as some make it out to be, unless of course they stupidly want to stay under the tax again

Would be great if DD could find the next JD Martinez instead of paying full price for one. Or the next Justin Turner or David Ortiz. I want Theo back. I also blame Cherington more than Dombrowski for current ills. He made more bad moves than good and left this team with some really bad contracts. Then again, with billionaires owning the shop, these are sunk costs. You adjust and move forward, just like the game between the lines.

I guess I'll throw this out there.... my realistically far fetched offseason plan:
Trade Porcello for Brian Dozier. This seems fair as Dozier only has one year left, Minn will get Porcello for 2yrs and about 40 mil.
Trade Bradley for a prospect and Kelvin Herrera/Buchter. KC will need a CF option after Cain leaves. JBJ is cheap for two years. Herrera is, I think in his last year. Buchter is a lefty we could use.
In two years we will not be able to resign all of JBJ, Bogaerts, Sale and Porcello. We can focus on Sale and X.
Sign JD Martinez.
Sign Seth Smith.
Resign Moreland.
Resign Fister, if we cannot get S. Ohtani.
Against Lefties:
1b Dozier 2b Pedroia Ss Bogaerts 3b Devers Rf Betts Cf Benny Lf Martinez Dh Ramierz C Vazquez
Leon Smith Moreland Marrero
Against Righties:
1b Moreland 2b Pedroia/Dozier Ss Bogaerts 3b Devers Rf Betts Cf Benny Lf Smith Dh Martinez C Vazquez
Leon Ramirez Marrero
I figure Dozier will get 70 starts at 2b, 50 at DH/1b and a few at 3b.

Would be great if DD could find the next JD Martinez instead of paying full price for one. A waiver claim that turns into a 30 homerun bat? I think that's happened twice in the past 15-20 years in Bautista and Martinez, maybe I'm wrong there's been more. I agree it would be awesome, but you're better off just playing the lottery with those odds.

Although I don't think 95 percent of what Jiant proposed is going to happen, I think Brian Dozier should be a target for Boston too. I personally think that Pedrioa should see 60 percent DH time at this point.
Maybe even Dozier could put on a first base mit and try out first base for flexibility purposes.
I'm really worried about Pedrioa's knee moving forward. That last surgery on his knee this past off-season made Pedrioa a shell of himself. He's always been banged up, but his knees are shot now.

Resign Fister, if we cannot get S. Ohtani. Have to think long and hard on which of these two choices I'd prefer.

His FB% regression in the second half points to him regressing back to his 2016 and prior form.

FWIW Tim Kurkjian doesnt think they fire Farrell. Gonna be some groans about this. Looks like Henry and DD are going the Jerry Jones route thinking they are 'thisclose". I'll guess that if they keep Farrell, that they also wont go over the cap, and expenses will be spared.

Give me more credit man, 95% wrong? Just kidding. I really liked the Porcello Dozier proposal. The Bradley one not as much, but I had to make room for both Dozier and Martinez. Also, I really liked having Smith or Ramirez as guys that can provide pop as a pinch hitter.

Pedroia's value is in being one of the better defensive 2B in the league combined with an above-average to better hitter. If his defense slips and he can't stay on the field at 2B, he's not going to be able to add value at DH.

A request, before we get there: let's try not to get too pie-in-the-sky on the projected trades and such. If there's no indication that a team is going to trade a guy, let's not go there. These things can very easily slip into a "what will it take to trade for this guy?" discussion. Also, try not to be repetitive. Starting to see some ideas being repeated by the same posters multiple times already. If nobody responds, just move on. Anyway, since it was mentioned above and I was stunned to see it when checking: the Phillies literally have one player under contract for next season who isn't either arb or pre-arb. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-SL03sk6dbfH9M5B2LlTTIsWoZ1w5O25K57qmQOkAG4/pubhtml
