Not going to be shocked if this goes down sooner rather than later, maybe even tonight. My guess is 5/$125 with a 6th year vesting option for an additional $25mil.

The only way it gets done quickly is if a team gives Boras exactly what he's asking for today. Of course no one will match that, so Boras will somehow expand the market and get other teams into it. He still got Chris Davis a 7/$161M contract when the Orioles were bidding against themselves.

I’d love to see the Sox get him for 5/$120 with a $20-25M mutual option. Beyond/above that, I think it’s a huge risk. Put him at DH, get an extreme LH-hitter platoonmate for Hanley at 1b (ideally an above-average fielder), and hope Beni/Devers keep developing. I could see Boras settling on 6/$160; I’m nervous the Sox will do that, or something close to it. Better hope Chavis is the real deal and learns 1b *very* quickly.

I'm 90% certain he's not the Sox primary target.

I'm 90% certain he's not the Sox primary target. I agree with you. Why such a high number? 90% wow! I very much hope that the sox do not get him. I think Dave is hoping devers, chavis, brentz, and an up year from mookie and the gang to be the boost in power.

I don't know the market for a DH-type, but I just hope Boston doesn't get an itchy trigger finger in light of NYY's Stanton acquisition. Don't bid against yourself!

I'm 90% certain he's not the Sox primary target. Hopefully they are just kicking the tires and don't commit stupid money for a soon to be DH.

I’d rather save some money and just get Santana. No point of signing the next Sandoval type deal for a 3 WAR 1B.

I think Martinez is signed by the end of the winter meetings. 6/156 is my guess (which was admittedly also Dave Cameron's).

I would think Dave is trying real hard on not adding the 6th year, so I will throw out 5 years at $27 mill per yr with an option for the 6th with a buy out for about $8 million. That comes to $143 million guaranteed. I acknowledge Boras will keep pushing, but I'd hate to see JD get 6 years.

6/180. Hopefully the signing that ends Dombrowski.

6/180. Hopefully the signing that ends Dombrowski. 6/195. It’s going to be a disgusting albatross of a contract. I hope that you’re right about the other thing. DD has been an absolute disaster.

6/156 sounds about right... if I had to guess.

My guess is he gets a seventh year vesting option thingywhat.
As long as there isn't an opt out I'll probably be able to talk myself into whatever the contract is. If there is one I'm going straight to Theo chair-throwing.

I will guess the Red Sox sign Martinez for 6 years $162 million with an option based on plate appearances for a 7th year for another $25 million.

I like the restraint being shown by Dombrowski. Appears that he is, in fact, playing the long game this time, recognizing that there isn't a huge market for him. Quite heartening.

As long as Zack Greinke remains a Diamondback I think that's the case. If he's dealt away and that frees up the money that could change the equation. And yes, I do think that Dombrowski is playing it correctly right now.

I want to give DD credit, but he came out and said a few days ago if he had his way his work would already be done. We'd be talking about a couple of moves already. I see two things stoping him, Boras and our owner. Boras waits out the market and usually gets close to what he wants. Also our owner wanting no part of Stanton, isn't going to sign off on a deal for Martinez that is close to Stantons. It would look very bad. So DD has to play the Market hoping he can get Martinez for around half the cost of Stanton. If Martinez gets close to 200 million I can see DD going after Hosmer.
My guess if the Sox sign him 6 year deal, with the 6 year being a team option. 6 years 160 million, but 5 years 145 million if you decline option. 5 year 135 million, plus 10 million buyout on option year.

Pretty much have to with Boras unless you want to pay list price. We know that the Red Sox deal well with Boras. But what about DD?
