Marlins starter Trevor Richards is making his major league debut. They designated Brian Ellington for assignment to make room for him.
I never understand why a team makes a transaction like that a day before they need to. But also, Marlins.

The Red Sox will not need a 5th starter again until 4/14. I wonder if they will option Velazquez to keep him on regular rotation or use him in the bullpen until then.
I think my personal preferences would be, in order: A) to recall Lin for his versatility off the bench, particularly in the two national league games where double-switching and a pinch runner are more likely to come into play; B) recalling Scott to give them an extra lefty; with a tie for C) between recalling Workman and just leaving Velazquez in the bullpen.

It appears that Velazquez traveled to Miami with the team, so it looks like he's staying up at least until the end of the road trip.
That said, he could easily head north with the team to Logan, then take the shuttle south to Pawtucket, since it's not like they're playing yet. And after thinking it through, the fact he's with the team doesn't mean he's going to be active for the series, necessarily.

Yeah I'm shocked to see the Sox didn't carry a extra bat for the Marlins series, but the Sox should beat the Marlins in one if not both games regardless.

In fact, since he's definitely not pitching in this series, if they make no roster move today, it's because they want him as the 8th man in the pen when they get back to Boston. And if they do recall Lin, they could option Walden and keep Velazquez for the last-men-in-pen role. After all, Velazquez beat out Walton for the 5th starter.

SP: two radically different pitching styles of BJ and Sale vs Miami. Nice. RP: Kimbrel, Smith and Hembree well rested. Nice. Hitters: lots of Florida guys, including JDM, happy to play at home in front of family, ready to go. Nunez, Hanley, Beni and BJ rested. Nice.

I guess we're lucky that Steven Wright won't added to the roster where he can pinch run as well. I kind of like it how they don't bunch the inter-league games together like they used to. Bring on the Marlins! We need a couple more spring training games.

Yankees home opener canceled due to snow lol, winter you can go away any second now....
Really looking forward to seeing Brian Johnson hit today. He probably isn't a good hitter, but at least he has a better chance than say anyone else the Sox throw out there.

I was in the stands when he hit his first college HR as a freshman, I think against Jacksonville. BTW, Austin Maddox can hit a little, too. He led Florida in HRs one season, before he became a pitcher. Not likely he will get a bat in his hand as a relief pitcher, though.

Most pitchers used to be the best hitters on their team in high school anyway. The problem is that they don't get reps at all, so it's basically like taking a great high school hitter and letting him face major league pitchers (after years of gathering rust). Slightly better for two-way college players. I don't even know if it's true anymore, because I bet that some high school pitchers are becoming exclusive pitchers by now.

Brian Johnson is an interesting pitcher to watch. The ball does a lot of things.

Maybe the offense will wake up the second time through the order.
Devers chased a pitch that was never in the strikezone on a 3-2 count.

Martinez should not be out of the lineup Don't get why Cora played him in LF yesterday rather than today. Pitching matchup? OF size?

Had no idea who that Brian Anderson kid was before that homerun. That was a pretty impressive homerun to the opposite field.
He had good numbers in the minors and a good walk rate. Seems like a legit piece going forward for them.

With the exception of Bogaerts, this team looks pretty lost at the plate right now. I *know* it can’t continue, but it’s sure ugly to watch.
