Wow. Nunez was hacking there.

Velazquez pitched really well and chewed up a ton of innings tonight. He's making a really good case of staying in the bullpen for good.

I’ve not done the data analysis but it seems like the aggressive approach for some guys has descended into abandoning the strike zone and hacking - especially so in the last few games where runs have been tougher to come by.

And Nunez just replaced Lin at second base for what conceivable reason? I'd much rather keep him at 3rd and leave Lin at 2nd.

Pomeranz has future Twin written all over him. Can already see the Yankees beating the living daylights out of him a couple times a year for the next few seasons.

I would have pinch hit Eduardo there.....he has looked terrible tonight. I thought about that, but with Lin out of the game we'd have had nobody that could play 2B with only Beintendi and Leon left. If you tie and go to extras, that'd be a really bad decision. I'd have pinch hit Beintendi for Bradley.

I'd have wanted Beintendi to hit with Bogey on and 1 out.

Moral victories mean nothing, but you have to love how the team was facing the opponent's ace on a day their starter had nothing and they were in it to the last out. As always it's the fight that counts.

Our numbers are even crappier if you take out Mookies stats the last seven days I bet.

Well the Yankees are winning and are making the best start in the last 20 years seem meaningless. Hopefully they blow it...

Our numbers are even crappier if you take out Mookies stats the last seven days I bet. Everyone on the board literally hated on me for questioning "one of the best offenses in MLB" a week ago. Now the Sox look like a team who's fighting until the last game of the season for the division all over again because of the lack of thump in their lineup. Edit- Every single game the Sox have lost within the last week, they have lost in 3 runs or less in these games. Every game they've won, they scored 4 runs or more (they lost 4 out of their last 6 games directly because of the lack of scoring).

It’s nice to have roster flexibility and we’re the best team in baseball so I totally understand not making rash decisions, but holy crap our catchers are bad. And Vazquez (who I like) is an overrated defender. Swisher is a risk too, but I think he needs PAs at any level and he isn’t getting them. Leon is what he is, and there’s plenty of fish like him in the sea. Sometime soon the shoe needs to drop there.

My thoughts exactly. The pendulum has swung a bit far. Somewhere in the middle..where we get good pitches to hit...not bail, whale and wail.

Nope... Lead down to 3 games A hot start is what it is -- a hot start. Things even out; they virtually always do. Now let's settle in for the long haul. True. A hot start is a hot start and that's what the Sox had. I thought talk about the Sox approaching or topping their all-time win mark was kind of over the top. This is a really good team, one that is capable of winning 95 - 100 games which is a higher range than they normally have. The talent is there. But there are weaknesses that are showing themselves. They haven't hit lefties well. Nunez came back diminished. I hope Pedroia doesn't come back diminished as well. They need his stellar defense and they actually need his bat. The Sox have a strong lineup but it gets weak toward the end. Vazquez hasn't hit this year and Leon won't. JBJ is still the same guy he's always been. He is what he is, which is not a good hitter. And Nunez isn't the same guy he was last year. So when the Sox put in Moreland or switch things up the lineup isn't as strong as it could be. It doesn't help with how passive Benintendi has been this year. It's almost like he's looking for a walk. They're pitching him tough this year and he has yet to adjust. Still, it's a strong offense, but I'll still take NY's offense. The advantage the Sox have is in the starting pitching. I do hope Pomeranz gets on track. He's pitching like a guy who could use some more spring training. And I do worry that Kimbrel and Sale haven't been as overpowering as usual. In Sale's case, perhaps it's they're saving bullets, which makes sense. And in Kimbrel's case, perhaps it's because he had no spring training, which also makes sense. It does suck that a 7.5 game lead over the MFYs has been whittled down to 3 in a blink of an eye. The Yankees have finally gotten hot, although they had help from the Minnesota Pinatas.

The Sox started 13-2 - then they went on the road and went 6-3 (the equivalent of winning all three series), against teams with a combined 44-33 record (41-27 against non-Red Sox opponents). Then they came home and lost a one-run game, despite just the fourth? poor start from a starter all season, facing a team that had won six straight and a pitcher who had allowed more than one run just once all season...
Yes, they are totally floundering. Fortunately, with big pitching advantages the next two days they just may salvage a 21-6 start to the year...
---
Yeah, baseball can be frustrating. This start has been phenomenal - and a big part of that has been the team's willingness to embrace the big picture (I don't always agree either). Perhaps we need to do the same. Nothing they can do about the Yankees also having a good start (except win series against them, which they have)...
