They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). It’s good they are sitting Beni tonight. His inability to hit left handed pitching is betting concerning. Platoon player is starting to creep into the conversation... I’m not saying he is, but it’s a real concern.

Red Sox wRC+ vs LHP is 51! Last in MLB. Much of the team has been brutal against LHP. It's not just Benintendi by any stretch: www.soxprospects.com/stats/hitting.php?split=4&page=1&sortby=YR&team=111&year=2018&type=1&min=0Both catchers, Benintendi, Bradley, Nunez, and Devers have all been bad. Now, that said... consider that Manaea is a LHP. We're early enough in the season that the one no-hitter probably skews that sample pretty heavily. They've faced just 4 LHSP in 24 games. 30 of their 210 plate appearances vs. LHP (14.3%) were from that one game. Without the Manaea game, the batting average jumps from .202 to .236. (That said, you probably shouldn't just take it out.)

Benetendi’s issues aren’t just this season so far. His career WC+ is 54 vs left handed pitching. It’s only 187 PA thus far so it’s not time to panic but it’s not good.

Leon has been strong in the past against LHP, but if he can't even start against them, then the only value he has is as a defensive replacement. There is some value in that, but the Sox should get off their fears of Swihart and at least give him a shot.

Interesting lineup today- 1) Betts RF 2) Hanley DH 3) Martinez LF 4) Moreland 1B 5) Xander SS 6) Nunez 3B 7) JBJ CF 8) Vazquez C 9) Lin 2B
Mitch Moreland should definitely not be used as a clean up hitter against LHP.

Interesting lineup today- 1) Betts RF 2) Hanley DH 3) Martinez LF 4) Moreland 1B 5) Xander SS 6) Nunez 3B 7) JBJ CF 8) Vazquez C 9) Lin 2B Mitch Moreland should definitely not be used as a clean up hitter against LHP. During the offseason I talked a lot about Moreland being a guy who needed / benefited from protection. They've been slotting him into the lineup as if they have the same idea. Zack Scott did hear the general rationale for that sort of judgment (splits with RISP and 1B open as a proxy for lack of protection), but I think it's likelier that they reached the same conclusion through other means. The first decision here, against a guy who is tough on LHB, is which LHB to sit. Moreland hits LHP much better than Benny. The decision to use Lin instead of Devers seems to be driven by one or both of two things: to give Devers a rest after a rough night, or to avoid Nunez's glove at 2B. I'd like to see a fair amount of Lin at 2B until Holt comes off the DL. Now, they'd better win tonight, because I've got some great numbers on the 17 MLB teams that have started a season 20-5 or better.

Three hard hit balls = two early runs against Pomeranz already.

Pomeranz still isn't inducing weak contact. Everything hit off of him is smoked.

Well pack it in. Snell looks unhittable early.

Well pack it in. Snell looks unhittable early. Unfortunately, Pomeranz is throwing BP.

Pomeranz still throwing 87-89 mph. Just topped out at 90 mph. Not good. Hit 92 just 2 pitches ago.

Whose idea was it to activate him after so little strength build up anyway? Why couldn’t he have done the full rehab?

God, Drew Pomeranz is absolute garbage. I would take Brian Johnson over him 10 days out of 10. Even Velasquez.

Snell looks tough and his pitch count is on pace for a complete game.

Once the Sox get a hit, they'll change that scoring play on JD to a hit and not an error on the pitcher. I wish Moreland would have taken one of those pitches to the opposite field. Needed a run with Mookie at third.

I don't know what our record would be without Mookie...but it sure as hell would not be 19-5.
