I understand that whoever they get might not be better than Barnes, but it's not like you can only have Barnes as your only real trustworthy guy. It's not a bad thing to have multiple guys who you can trust to pitch high leverage. Because what if Barnes doesn't have it? What do you do? Just say that he didn't have it and don't have another option? We kind of know when Barnes is struggling - he can't throw strikes. Instead of having a train wreck, why not have another trustworthy guy who can pitch high leverage. And I don't agree that Iglesias is this huge upgrade to Lin. Iglesias is good defensively, but not otherworldly as we had been led to believe way back when and he pings singles, and that's it. I don't think he does anything that Lin can't do. And you only really need one or two backup infielders. It's different than high leverage relievers. In a playoff series your backup infielder will play sparingly but your high leverage relievers will pitch quite often. That's another big reason why it's more of a priority to get a good reliever. The Sox are not going to lose to the Yankees/Astros because their backup infielder is the problem. They'd lose because they couldn't properly bridge the game from their starter to their closer. That would do them in. Take a look at our track record acquiring relievers mid season. Other than Ziegler, I can’t think of any that have contributed in a meaningful way. Don't care about "track record". I care about finding relievers that bolster our bullpen, somebody capable of pitching high leverage games against NY or Houston. Don't care if the Sox acquired Eric Gagne in 2007 and he crapped the bed or that Addison Reed was merely only decent and didn't set the world on fire. Whatever guy they would get would be incremental in WAR terms, but in small situations that become big like getting key outs in the post-season, well as long as you're not overpaying and there's no evidence it will really cost the Sox a ton to get a competent reliever (we're not talking guys with years of control like Brad Hand), I don't see why they Sox shouldn't try. Maybe they'll get a good reliever who is pitching at the top of his game when it matters most. You don't know. But what you don't do is throw inexperienced kids out there and EXPECT them to pitch high leverage in post-season games. That's not fair to them. Kelly is up and down. Barnes is pitching very well, but it doesn't mean that he can't have more help. Hembree and Workman are more for pitching in the middle innings. Thornburg at this point is too much of a wild card to depend on, though his 2016 version, but with an expiring contract, would be a nice get. I find that you overpay for relievers when they have a lot of service time left. That's not necessary for this pennant race/post-season. So no, I don't expect them to go after Hand or Iglesias from Cincy.

Sounds as if Brian Johnson irritated his hip running the bases in his last in DC. Does not sound as if he will be down for extended time. Velazquez probable starter Tuesday. E-Rod starts Monday.

JD Martinez will sit today. Fouled balls off left calf and right foot Saturday night.

I remember thinking Phillips was overrated for so long it's funny that now I think this could be an underrated move that precludes another trade to mess up our farm system even more.

For reference, today's NY/Tor game is the one that MLB/ESPN kowtowed to the Yankees to move up in time.

I feel like it would’ve been a good idea for Nunez not to ground into a double play there.

Didn't see the play that the Sox challenged but they seem to have a horrible record on challenges. That could be bad challenges by Cora but they seem to lose almost all of them when the other team challenges too. Must be like low babip. Hope it turns around soon.

I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that MLB umpires are horrible people who can’t even get calls right with the benefit of replay.

First time thru the lineup, Sox put the ball on the ground 7 times.

For Nunez, taking a pitch - working a walk - is the absolute worst thing in the world, it seems.

First two pitches to Pearce landed in the same exact spot. The count is 1-1.
MLB umps, everyone!

Red Sox record 40-4 when they score first...not too shabby!

Beni has now reached base on 8 consecutive plate appearances. Dave O'Brien said it was 9, but that appears to be wrong.

Ugh, I was hoping to be able to say something snarky about Nunez again. Oh well, I'll take the run.
