The Red Sox have officially struck a deal to land righty Nathan Eovaldi from the division-rival Rays, as Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic first reported (via Twitter). Young lefty Jalen Beeks will go to Tampa Bay in return, per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times

Welp, don't love that.
Seriously, someone talk me into this. How are 10 Nathan Eovaldi starts worth six-plus years of Jalen Beeks?

Whoa. Well then.
Management must not think much of Beeks.

Yuck.
Can’t wait for Jalen Beeks to beat the Red Sox more times than Eovaldi even makes appearances for us over the next 6 years.

Does this push Pomeranz or Johnson to the pen? I could see a phantom DL spot for Joe Kelly to make room but I am not sold on the idea we trade a guy like Beeks for Eovaldi if he isn't starting.

So it won't be long before the Red Sox will be back to the Kyle Kendricks and Aaron Cook type of spot starts that require 40 man moves for every game they pitch in.

So Eovaldi's ERA is 4.28 (and FIP agrees with that number) through 10 starts despite having a WHIP below 1. How does that even happen? Just a ton of HRs?

Not a fan. Throwing away a young, controllable starting option for a average at best pitcher for three or so months. Beeks had the shortest of auditions and threw better than many gave him credit for. The Rays won this trade in my opinion.

Finances may have played a part in this. Eovaldi costs only two million this season which will be pro rated. Had 14 wins with Yanks a few seasons back and threw a shutout recently.
Good depth move.

I don't love the trade but they did need a starter for the rest of the year and at least it wasn't one of their starting prospects with a higher ceiling like Houck or Mata. Then again the deadline hasn't passed and I would think they will still be on the hunt for a reliever. Hopefully this ends up being one of those deals where we say well I guess DD and crew evaluated Beeks correctly as nothing more than a AAAA type of guy.

Eovaldi was the best rental starter on the market, easily. If the Yankees want to compete now, they're going to have to deal Sheffield for a guy with years of control, I think.
It's almost like we faked them out by forcing them to focus on Britton. As of right now, they're going to have a historically great ability to hold onto a 1- or 2-run deficit.
I think Beeks will be an MLB starter but I'm trusting DDo on this one, that he projects to be a #4 (as most scouts still have him), and those guys are common.
I'm gong to update my jxwOBA numbers for the Sox and Yankees starters.

This makes perfect sense (and the protests are perfectly predictable). Eovaldi has more value this season than Beeks, and we have traded Beeks' likely though uncertain future value to maximize our chances of winning this year. Seriously, didn't you think an OK starting pitcher was going to cost more than this?

Sometimes, great AAA numbers don't translate to the Big Leagues. I hope the Sox get to bat against Beeks a lot over the next 6 years, although I suspect he won't be spending that much time in the Majors.

I wouldn't put that much emphasis on 2 starts where he had awful BABIP luck. He only had 1 start. Second appearance was in relief. And I wouldn't characterize 9 runs in just over 6 innings pitched as "awful BABIP luck." Mediocre stuff plus poor location is a bad combination. Maybe he figures it out in Tampa, and replicates his AAA performance at the MLB level. Like DD, I'd take the under on that.

I like it. I’d trust him more in the post season than Pomeranz. Come Sept maybe Pom and E Rod could help out in the pen and this kills two birds.
