So one play in the heat of a playoff game makes him a dirty player? Nope... he’s hyper competitive and that was a caught up in the moment play. Too far? Yes... individual dirty play? Surely Doesn’t make the guy a dirty player. He had a great hard nosed career. When you play hard and all out for as many years as he did, occasionally you could be in situations like that. You act as if this guy was reckless over the course of his career and/or was out to injure people. Yeah he only broke one leg and destroyed a career so let's canonize him. You watch, that one play in the national spotlight will keep him out of the HOF. Ok so yea, we are basing it off of one play. Good to know. And yes, that’s quite possible considering the source. The baseball HOF and it’s voters are a complete joke.

One side benefit of the trade is not having posters making a dairy product of Ty's last name.

So many jokes here... Do I go towards the conversation yesterday about how this is a racist take? Or Do we go the Fort Night route and how Price got another “gamer” for his team? I really didn't want to start that again. Just found it hilarious after yesterday. Haha and I found a recent post above as the predictable outcome of yesterday's conversation.

My money: the Sox stay under the cap and no more trades. I don't understand the Ziegler talk at all. Dombrowski is all about power arms and he's got a mess of them at this point what with Thornburg starting to show. The Kinsler move makes a lot of sense with the question mark around Phillips. And this isn't the first time we've seen Nuñez shine at third. He passes the eyeball test, for me, as a very good fielder at the position. Bogaerts was the hitman on that twin killing, but Nuñez was his trusted accomplice. When will we know for sure if we stayed under the cap? NBC said we were over it on sunday.

In theory, we don't know until the end of the season. There's another 2 months for them to add and subtract payroll, potentially. If they're close, there could be ways in which they get back under or something. I'm in agreement with the mindset that they're likely still under based on the money that keeps coming back in these deals, but jmei's point above is a very good one and could be all that's in play here.

Yeah I get that. They are under $237M until they actually spend that much. I would hate the idea that they're so close that they couldn't bring up many guys in September though. I just wish someone would ask what their intentions are. I guess they could also be getting salary added in order to have the option to go either way. Maybe they could still dump some salary somehow (with a trade of Joe Kelly or something similar). Another unrelated point - Nunez finally is heating up, so it's kind of nice that he'll have the opportunity to play out that hot streak at 3B which is a much better position for him.

Dombrowski dealing from the Sox depth of organizational arms. I think this is the part I missed initially, hated this trade at the time it happened because of how thoroughly Buttrey was dominating AAA. However, if the Sox were as enamored with Buttrey as I was we would have seen him in Boston a month ago. Plus, bullpen depth is probably where we have the most depth in the farm system. It would have been hard for these guys to break into the majors given they guys ahead of them and they've got two younger guys in Lakins and Feltman who are in the process of surpassing them. I've always thought Kinsler was a great player, so I'm looking forward to seeing him play for the Red Sox for at least a few months. Kind of still hate the idea of going over the $237M mark, but we do have a lot of our best prospects playing A-ball right now. If you had to pick a year for a down draft, 2019 might be an OK option. Also Beeks Buttrey and Jerez are all around 25-26 years old. All ranked higher than Denyi Reyes. Would anyone here rather have given up Reyes ? .

Really like this one. Completely solidifies our defense up the middle. I think, as others have noted already, his bat will play much better at Fenway than his ytd stats might indicate.

SSS, but Kinsler has a .941 OPS v. J.A. Happ, 2d behind Pearce (1.405).

Great trade! I really wanted to see Brandon Phillips make it up but after his injury this was the right move. I wish we could use that 40 man roster spot on Castillo but I guess it will screw with our cap. The dude is having a really good year just rotting away in AAA. We should of been training him at 2nd base knowing how old Peddy is getting.

Sure he's a very rich man, but he's just wasting away in the minors. He'd be a perfect guy for the Marlins with their Cuban population.

I'm pretty sure that the payroll that counts towards the CBT is not determined until the end of the season.
I assume that players called up in September get MLB minimum, and that their salary counts against the cap. Each guy called up is an approximate $80K hit.
Of the currently optioned players, Workman is the only guy guaranteed to be recalled. Adding Poyner or Scott would be desirable. But they could live without seemingly obvious guys like Lin, Travis, and (a bit less obviously) the second LHR and Marcus Walden, if they needed to, in order to stay under the cap.
My estimate that they're still $200K under is based on recalling a typical amount of guys, and they won't be.
Oh, and another note -- freeing up the 40-man roster spot might actually come in useful, because Austin Maddox is on the 60-day and says he hopes to pitch this year. He counts against the cap at MLB minimum rate, and they won't want to burn an option on him, so he can be added to the MLB roster in September without changing their cap hit.

@dwolfsonkstp If curious if a Dozier market still exists, it does. Actually is heating up this morning, I'm told. #MNTwins won't though just give him away.
Thats why.

SSS, but Kinsler has a .941 OPS v. J.A. Happ, 2d behind Pearce (1.405). Kinsler has always been one hitter I didn't want to come up to the plate. He was a real tough out in Texas, and other than Miggy, I hated having him come up in a big spot in a game with the Tigers. To me, he is like that pest Gardner in the Bronx. I just hate him leading off an inning or coming up with runners in scoring position. Him and Kinsler always seem to scare the blank out of me. I totally LOVE the trade! Kinsler, in my opinion, will lengthen the line-up (something we really need), hit really well in Fenway, and tighten our infield defense bigly (that is a word now?). Amazing that DD was able to add Evoldi, Pearce, and Kinsler for some prospects that, almost certainly, would not have played much if any role in Boston. I hate it that Pedroia can't join in the fun this year, but it definitely takes the pressure off him for pushing it and maybe re-injuring himself. LOVE IT!!

Loved this trade last night, love it even more today. Took a position of clear weakness and turned it into somewhat of a position of strength. No, Kinsler is not what he once was, but I agree with the general consensus that he has a nice Fenway swing and he is strong defensively. My biggest concern about this roster is not the bullpen, it’s 6-9 in the batting order. Having Kinsler on board helps assuage those concerns somewhat. It’s easy for me to see him thriving in his short time here. Here’s hoping.

With Kinsler, Swihart hopefully getting more opportunities, and Bradley picking thing up, their lineup is really lengthened.
Betts Benni JDM Moreland/Pierce Xander Devers/Nunez Kinsler Swihart Bradley
That's a tough lineup, especially if Devers hits.

To belabor a point, having Swihart get regular ABs and beginning to show why he was a first rounder is a lot like trading to upgrade catcher with the added bonus of his positional flexibility. WHile he is still in SSS limbo we know him well enough to think this is more like the real palyer and not a flash in the pan. Good non-trade.

I had completely forgotten about Castillo. If we're over $237M anyway then do we bring him up? No. If you call him up now you can't get rid of his money for next year by outrighting him anymore. He's not coming up this year.

Kinsler will wear #5. So, Lin not only gets sent to AAA, he also loses his number. I bet Kinsler doesn't even buy him the traditional steak dinner.
