Not the encouraging start I was hoping for tonight. If Sale isn’t Sale in the postseason, I can’t see this team winning it all.

yea, i guess. But Chris Sale throwing his fastball around 91mph is a bit alarming He did this at the beginning of the season. He wasn't throwing with any conviction tonight. Minus well call this game a simulated game for him for this very reason alone. I was thinking the exact same thing i remember him throwing in low 90s in april. I really hope ur right and he's himself next week

At this point I'm thinking if Nunez isn't ready, it'll be Lin not Phillips. Palmer on Sale "Sounds like he has the governor on tonight." To clarify for those that are younger, a governor was a device that some people put on carburetors in the 50's and 60's that limited gasoline into the carburetor. Pre fuel injector thing.

Vazquez can't block pitchs in the dirt now, will call for the high fastball all day and he also can't hit. Give me Lin instead!

Ho hum game (aside from the interests of Sale's start), not surprising at all. Not a good appearance by Barnes. Rest the starters and keep them healthy (except for Devers for some reason). Let's get the last three games against the MFY out of the way with all of our important players in one piece....great season - I am ready for the playoffs.

Kimbrel joins Barnes in ugly appearance land...wow. Just getting some work, but Craig simply isn't good unless he is saving a game, it seems.

dam, turned off the game but just checked gameday. Looks like Kimbrel is in 2016 form in wildness tonight...sigh

To me at least, this is way more alarming than Sale hitting 91. Watching Barnes and Kimbrel not throw anything close to the plate are HUGE issues.

This is shaping up to be a disconcerting loss. The loss in itself isn't the end of the world certainly - just means that they likely won't reach 110 wins. They'll probably wind up with 108 or 109.
The disconcerting part was definitely Chris Sale's performance. The pinpoint command and the velocity wasn't there.
I have trouble believing he's simply going to flip the switch next Friday and be June/July Chris Sale. Otherwise I'd have thought he would have done it, just the way he did it against Baltimore in that August start.
I don't think the velocity is there for him right now. He's fighting it. Hard to trust that it's going to suddenly reappear when they need it most - and the Sox definitely need it most. They need for Chris Sale to bring "the ferrari out of the garage."
This team simply isn't going to get far without a top-notch Chris Sale. If Sale doesn't pitch better a team like NY or even Oakland is going to hit him hard and it'll be a short game for him. Without a prime Chris Sale I think the Sox are there to be taken in the first round.
And if Barnes doesn't look better than he did tonight that spells trouble for the bullpen. Barnes is a key guy in that pen. When he's right, he is their best 7th/8th inning guy. The Sox look like they'll have to depend on Wright to go 2 plus innings to get to Kimbrel.
Kimbrel's ineffectiveness is ok, I think. I think it's just rust and if he's going to be lousy, tonight's a good night for it, so I'm not really concerned about him - I don't think this outing means much for him as it certainly does for Sale and to a lesser extent Barnes.

Has Kimbrel ever had such an ugly stat line for a game?
1/3 IP, 0 hits, 4 earned runs, 3 walks, 0 K
Of course an assist goes to Robby Scott for all of the inherited runners scoring.

Why is Dave O' Brien so concerned about the MFY & A's scores? He hasn't one time mention that the MFY are basically 4 games ahead. It's 3 games in the loss column, but the A's HAVE to beat the MFY by one game since the MFY hold the tie-breaker.
I'm not wooried about Sale, Barnes or Kimbrel until Oct. 5th. Lets see what they do then. This is a glorified Spring Training game>LOL

There were also some pluses in this game.
Sale got his work in 92 pitches up from 73 ERod, Wright and Brasier all looked very good. Lin, Devers and Swihart all had solid ABs

Actually I'm worried about Kimbrel in a way, but not about tonight's game, unlike Sale and Barnes.
I think with Kimbrel, he's going to have at least 4 days off when next Friday rolls around.
I worry that if he comes into Game 1 with a lead he won't be sharp and will start walking guys. I think Kimbrel has to have a regular usage pattern or else his control suffers greatly, kind of like it did tonight. He was rusty and it showed. And he'll be rusty when his first appearance in the playoffs come around.

Man that's ugly. At least 2 of these guys should be left off the playoff roster in Kelly and Hembree though.

three games to go. Team tuning up nicely for the playoff run.
Check the stats of our starters
Mookie .346-32-80 - hot Benny .287-16-86 - heating back up JDM .330-42-127 - hot Xander .288-22-100 - hot Moreland .244-15-67 - ready to come out of the slump? or Pearce .275-6-21 - steady Raffi .244-21-66 - hot or Nunez .264-10-44 over his injury? Brockstar .272-6-43 - hot or Kinsler .252-1-15 - not Swihart .235-3-17 - hot or Leon .180-5-22 - COLD or Vazquez .210-3-16 - nearly as cold JBJ .232-13-58 - steady
Main issues are Moreland, catcher (if not Swihart), Kinsler - but the black holes have filled in nicely recently. Actually thinking Lin would look good on our roster, hitting quite well.
Awesome line up for the most part with which to hit the postseason.

Fangraphs & BRef haven't updated yet but I saw a tweet earlier that said Mookie now has 10 fWAR (9.9 without today's numbers). He has 10.7 bWAR. Pick your poison, a 10 WAR player.

Memory Lane....
Some other players many of you will recall..
Sammy White. The best all around Sox catcher in my memory until Pudge came along. After retirement started a then famous bowling alley at the rotary in Boston.
Pete Runnels good defensive first baseman with a strong bat. Had no power though.
Chuck Schilling. Got our hopes up with a rookie of the year as a second baseman. Flopped after that.
Don Buddin, shortstop, still the worst defensive shortstop I've ever seen.
Frank Malzone, 3B. Including longevity, the best all around Sox third baseman since Foxx.
A trio of outfielders who were decent enough defenders but put fear in no pitcher, Carroll Hardy, Gary Geiger & Billy Conigliaro.
Starting pitcher has to be Billy Rhor who made his major league debut at Yankee Stadium (their home opener ?) and carried a no-no within a strike to Elston Howard who hit a broken bat flair single to right field)
Reliever. Anybody who played Strat-O-Matic baseball knew who Dick Radatz was.
Honorable Mention.. Jose Tartabull who had absolutely no arm yet somehow was able to launch a rocket to nail a runner at home. The Sox were down 10-0 and came back to win 11-10. That throw was considered the play that launched the Imposible Dream year. Also, on a personal note, my all time favorite game to have attended. (I was in RF directly behind Jose.)

Don Buddin, the worst shortstop who ever lived, made 35 errors in back to back seasons. They weren't just regular errors. They were the kind with the game on the line. He only kept his job because he was from South Carolina, where Yawkey came from. Mike Higgins, the manager, was also from the South. If you recall, he once ran over a workman on the side of the road and killed him while he was drunk driving.
Anyway, when Buddin finally left Boston, he never came back. He knew how much he was hated.
Tom Yawkey didn't like Frank Malzone. Why? Because he was from Long Island. Tome Yawkey didn't like Willie Mays. Why? I think you know why.
