Something I didn't know. Mookie will become the first 30/30 player to win a batting title.

I'm sure the decision is deeper, but if today was the coin flip to see who goes to the bullpen between Eovaldi and EdRod, we have a clear winner (loser).

"I know Cora is resting the players and not worried about winning these games, but instead making sure they're all healthy for the playoffs. BUT I hope he understands that the Yankees are really trying to win these games, are very good and that it's silly to think that he can just flip a switch and we will turn it on against them in the playoffs (Because as good as Oak has been, it's NY we will be facing) We will see Happ and CC in the 1st 2 games cause they are suppose to be the Red Sox killers, Severino will be going 3rd game. So all this rest and this nonchalant attitude over these games might come back to bite them in the ass." My 2 cents.

Workman's turn to fail out of the bullpen. It's certainly been a generally widespread failed post season pen audition for so many.

At the risk of sounding repetitious (which people would probably say I am), I am less worried about playoff results this year. We have recent championships in hand. I am pleased that this year turned out to be a (franchise) all-time dominant one in the regular season, something I have never before witnessed in 62 years of following this franchise.

There might be a 3-5 year gap between Workman last important outing to this one.

At least we’ve got some useful info these last two games as far as the playoff roster. Have to give Eovaldi that 4th starter slot.

Its hilarious that people are acting like the Yankees are all of a sudden better than the Red Sox because of games that literally mean nothing.

Tomorrow they should start bunting drills and suicide squeeze.

When it really mattered, the Red Sox swept 4 and raised the lead to 9.5 games. If it were reversed, they would have had a 1.5 game lead at the end of it.

Either we were worn down from playing too much, or we lost our edge because we didn't play enough. I don't know the exact amount of at bats/playing time these guys should get (it's probably a different answer for every player), and neither do you, and neither does the coaching staff. But considering the coaching staff is a group of baseball experts operating with way more information than we have access to, I will gladly defer to their best judgment.

Happy that you have been a Red Sox for 62 years (You got me by 20 years) but let me ask you when are you worried about playoff results? When we barely make it in and have nothing to lose? And I love me a good underdog story but we are going in the playoffs as favorites and if we do not win it all (or get to the WS) it will be a disappointment. We are playing with no edge atm, giving NY confidence that they can beat us at will. Before we swept them we had that edge, we were still view as the Wild Card team. Now, not so much but at least our players are rested and having a good time we should be ready for 2019 ST. And our last championship was in 2013, that was a lifetime ago.

There isn't crap a team can do to guarantee a WS win no matter how good they are, no matter how hot they are going into the playoffs, no matter how healthy they are and no matter how rested they are. The best teams rarely win it all because anything can happen in a short series. The problem is that there are too many playoff teams and that makes it more likely that the best team will not win. So why worry about it? Enjoy what you can. I never worry about things that there is literally zero control over. What I've enjoyed is watching incredible baseball for the last 6 months. I'm kind of sad that the regular season is over. But yeah, the spoiled Boston fans who don't remember what not winning for 86 years felt like demand championships every year in every sport now so I get it.

I do not know this, you are right. And I know these games are "meaningless" but guess what? They are meaningless to NY too but they are still playing to win. And I am not making an excuse for being worn down, I am on that other boat. So I am hoping that when Cora flips that switch everything goes well and all that rest and that laid back attitude will help them be relaxed and win it all.

Now see, here's where I disagree with you. I think the regular season is very much why the game is played, and I'd think that 3 million fans in the stands for the last 6 months along with the money-making cable audience would tell you that a few weeks in October is not the main reason most watch. This site has constant discussions about who is how good, who is better or not better than whom, who ranks where among all those who have played the game, etc. Virtually all of that discussion centers around REGULAR SEASON performance. If the regular season is so secondary, why does anyone even care who is better than whom, or where players stand statistically?? If it doesn't mean all that much, it doesn't mean all that much. But if all the discussion and all the statistics are worthwhile and important to follow, so is the schedule that produces them.

Six months of nightly entertainment is pretty huge, especially when there is absolutely nothing on tv all summer. The regular season of baseball is awesome, unlike just about every other sport. I find the games so relaxing and exciting at the same time, even when they lose. I've always looked forward to spring training. I rarely look forward to October because I'm busy enjoying baseball already.

He certainly has gotten kudos for his first regular season managing job, but this is his first exposure to the lead-in to the entirely different postseason. It's his first time through this, AND he has essentially handed himself an unusual situation because of the extreme success to which he has led the team over the last 6 months. Maybe after the playoffs are over he will say "looking back at it after the fact, I would have handled the last few weeks of the regular season somewhat differently." Maybe he has something to learn. Or, maybe he's pushing just the right buttons for this team. We'll probably be able to make a better judgment about that after the playoffs are over, and I don't mean judging by results. There are subjective measures beyond results. If the team does not win the championship but plays hard, makes games entertaining and goes down fighting (they could for example play well but not be able to get past Houston's dominant pitching), we shrug and say it wasn't to be. If the team looks tight, lost, or plays tentatively or lackadaisically (i.e., can't "flip the switch back on") and loses, then there is more evidence that perhaps the last few weeks of the regular season should have been handled differently

Brock Holt cannot be contained! Is he our starting 1B in the playoffs?
Lin's OPS for the season is up to .758, which is pretty incredible to be getting from him. Holt is up to .766. Both are higher than Moreland's .757.

This may or may not mean anything...but some data for playoff teams the last three years. They are all uniquely different teams, so it is apples and ugli fruit - but just wondered what it would look like. Certainly not huge separations.
2016 - last 10 reg season games
Boston 5-5 Baltimore 7-3 Toronto 6-4 Cleveland 6-4 Texas 5-5
2017
Boston 5-5 New York 6-4 Cleveland 7-3 Minnesota 7-3 Houston 8-2
2018 - This year - last 10 games (counting this one as a loss for us, but Holt made it interesting - so who knows!)
Boston - 4-6 New York - 7-3 Cleveland - 6-4 Houston - 7-3 Oakland - 6-4
Not a huge separation - but we don't seem to exactly enter the postseason on fire.
and for completion, our last three WS victory years - as a comparison
2004 7-3 2007 6-4 2013 5-5 (but 12 and 15 runs in two of their last four games)

The REGULAR SEASON is part of the game just like in any other sports, but players (Bucky Dent, Aaron Boone) and TEAMS (Seattle 2001) are judged and remembered by what they do in the Playoffs .

I have enjoyed this season a whole lot and I am looking forward to the playoffs. I never worry about things I can't control but thanks for the advice, lol. You calling me spoiled? I guess you know me too. You live in NYC/North Jersey area? I was there for '78, '86 and '03 (and every season in between) my Dad was there for '46, '67, '75, etc; and I am the least pessimistic Red Sox (Patriots, Bruins, Celtics) fan you'll ever meet. So I never take anything for granted but since you know me you should of known that as well, sorry my comments hurt your feelings John. And these are not my Dad's or the Yawkey's Red Sox anymore. These Red Sox belong to a man that wants to win and will spend whatever it takes to do so year in and year out. And one last thing if you look back at the list of the past 15 World Series Champions, the Best teams like the 2017 Astros, 2016 Cubs or the 2013/2007 Red Sox or 2009 Yankees (I can keep going) usually end up winning it all.

Interesting discussion here on the "value" of the post season vs the regular season - and I suspect each member of this board will have a slightly to considerably different opinion.
As my user name says - I've been a fan of this team for 51 years. I've listened to or watched as many games as possible for most of those years - and many of those seasons were not about the post season. In rough seasons one looks for what good happens - becoming fond of certain players, following the stats.
For some of us, it may well be all or nothing that brings the joy. For me, going all the way is really icing on the cake - 2004, the one that changed everything, will of course be supremely memorable. But there have been elements of each and every season I've loved.
Even the Valentine season...how can you not love the Aceves blow ups, the mad utterings of a most unsuitable manager, and the knowledge that the farm system is working and that the pain of the truly awful seasons are temporary!
So my view is that I deeply enjoy it all - spring training, regular season, and if we are lucky enough to get there, the post season.

Not that it matters, but that home plate umpire was awful during that last plate appearance. JBJ had no chance given the plate zone for that AB.
