Carpenter, Doyle, Hernandez and Villarreal are reassigned. 42 remain in camp, including Kalish.
Of the remaining 44, 32 are from the 40-man roster, one is on the 60-day disabled list (Kalish) and 9 are non-roster invitees (Carter, De La Torre, Maier, Sweeney, JBJ, Sutton, Overbay, Bogaerts, Diaz).

Okay so I understand a little better. What they gave up to get him may or may not indicate how they view him, they think they got a steal, but it does indicate that he isn't very good and thus has to fight for a roster spot. His 40 man spot doesn't give him an edge over Sweeney or Overbay, because the 40 man roster is full and it's likely that he'd be the one DFA'd to make room. All three players share the likelihood of being gone if they don't make the team so it's not relevant which one happens to be on the 40 man roster today.
I would mostly agree with that and the rest of your post but would like to add a couple of things that you could comment on.
#1 Does Overbay get another major league job if he doesn't make the team? If not he may accept an offer to play in Rhode Island and push his opt out time till May 15th. Who would be interested in giving him a major league job? Yankees?
#2 Wither Mauro Gomez. He's not often mentioned as having a chance to make the team because he's limited defensively and offensively. He does have options but if they have to clear a 40 man roster spot, wouldn't he be the most logical candidate? What other moves could they make to make room? Morales, Hassan to 60 day DL?

How about putting Drake Britton on the un-able to perform list. Wouldn't that theoretically clear a 40man roster slot.

Maybe they could put him on the practice squad.

Could they say he didn't pass the conditioning run and put him on the PUP list?

What was Kukuk on last season? I remember they were calling it something...... Regardless what they call it , couldn't we put Britton on that? Kukuk was placed on the restricted list after his DUI. The DUI was later dismissed due to lack of probable cause by the officer pulling him over, since squealing tires don't qualify as PC under Florida law in such a case. From MiLB.com: Restricted list: The restricted list is for players who are suspended because of failure to adhere to the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. It also may be used if a player violates contact terms or fails to appear for a team or camp assignment. An example of the latter is a foreign player who cannot join his team because of visa problems. Here's some further reading on the Restricted list, and the Disqualified List at Baseball-Reference's Wiki.EDIT: Ok, now you've got me interested in the various disciplinary "lists" one can be placed on. I found this to be an informative, and not too lengthy write-up by Jeff Euston, a KC attorney who runs Cot's Baseball Contracts at BP: www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=10855

Britton being on the 40-man makes this a different situation. I'm interested to see what happens.

They really don't have to do anything with Britton. He's optioned out to Portland but they can just leave him back in extended spring training if they want saying he needs extra work until his court appearance on April 12th.

Iglesias 3-3 today. 2 hits against Lee and lines a single to right against Papelbon. Bradley deserves all of the talk. But, maybe he's turning the corner at the plate and can hit 240-250.

Forgot to add. Was impressed with first 3 pitchers; Workman, Bailey and Bard. Had the Phillies broadcast. Didn't have a gun. After walking first batter, Workman settled down and threw strikes. Nasty hook in first to K Utley. Bailey threw really well. Actually, got 5 outs in his inning. Bradley dropped a pop fly where he waived off WMB and Napoli mis-played a foul pop-up. Was very windy. Bard looked good too. Had nasty bite on his slider. And, the hits he gave up were a drag bunt where Pedey usually makes the play and a flare to Utley after a tough battle. Blew a couple past Ryan Howard. But, who doesn't?

All-in-all, a good spring for the prospects. Nice to have the depth the team has built-up. The decisions about who gets sent down, where they go, and who gets cut will be tough. I'd argue that's the way you want it. Have not heard anything about Drew outside of the fact he's been cleared to play. Even if they do want to give him more time, they won't lose much at shortstop given what they gain in the field with Iglesias. A short-term replacement for Ortiz is more problematic, but there are options there as well, again because they've stocked up with some depth. The lineup will produce some runs. It's all going to come down to pitching if they want to keep their heads above water in what promises to be a very competitive division. Buchholz and Lester have impressed, so far. Let's see how that goes when this all starts up for good.

That's probably his assignment, yes. Everybody who's still around gets a shot, that's spring training. I don't think we'll be seeing Ramirez in MLB anytime soon, but this should give him some motivation to work on a few things. That's the idea. It's not as if he's the only one who's ever given up home runs to Utley and Howard, right?

Who's to 'know' but Noe, who has a herky-jerky delivery, did not appear to be either sufficiently deceptive or 'armed' with enough inherent stuff or consistent control/location to project promise on this day. Iglesias looked great in his ABs and in the field...great game for him. I hope that Drew is this year's shortstop but Iggy looked damned good today. Sharp hits all. Progress is being made.

Got the day off tomorrow, and I've searched, but haven't found it. Anyone have a minor league schedule for tomorrow? I'm in the Sarasota area, and want to take in a minor league game.

Bogaerts, Diaz and Sutton have been reassigned to minor league camp. 39 remain in camp, including Kalish.
Of the remaining 39, 32 are from the 40-man roster, one is on the 60-day disabled list (Kalish) and 6 are non-roster invitees (Carter, De La Torre, Maier, Sweeney, JBJ, Overbay).

Overbay released. 38 remain in camp, including Kalish.
Of the remaining 38, 32 are from the 40-man roster (of which four - Ortiz, Drew, Morales and Breslow are expected to start the year on the DL), one is on the 60-day disabled list (Kalish) and five are non-roster invitees (Carter, De La Torre, Maier, Sweeney, JBJ).
Effectively, there are eight more cuts to come.
A decision on Sweeney is imminent.

Sea Dog lineup today (off day for main club, so instructive for actual placements), per Mike Antonelli:
Wilkerson RF Vitek DH#1 Bogaerts SS Shaw DH#2 (spring training, so playing 10 batters) Almanzar 1B Vazquez C Meneses 2B Hissey LF Bermudez CF Natoli 3B
Barnes starting
Bench - M.Johnson, Gibson, Escobar

Update: Speier is reporting that the Sweeney decision won't be coming today. Sweeney's opt out date is Thursday, so the team technically has until 72 hours after that to either put Sweeney on the 40 man roster or release him. That is assuming that Sweeney asks for his release on Thursday. Five more days for Ben to convince Larry that putting Bradley on the opening day roster is a bad idea?
