Supposedly Maier is getting real consideration as well as a backup outfielder, so it may not simply be a Bradley vs. Sweeney decision.

Bradley is competing with Carp, Nava, maybe Gomez, Lavarnway... maybe an extra pitcher.

Bradley is competing with Carp, Nava, maybe Gomez, Lavarnway... maybe an extra pitcher. That's a good point, I hadn't really thought of the backup CF angle. Though if Bradley makes it, they'll have three starting outfielders who can handle center, so having a backup who can do so may not be necessary. Bradley as the starting LF with both Nava and Carp making the roster (and Gomes as DH) seems possible. If Bradley doesn't make it though, I'd agree that either Sweeney or Maier would. Lots of moving parts here.

EVERY time I see Ryan Sweeney at-bat it makes me sick. He is a complete waste at the plate. His ONLY desirable attribute is his ability to play a good right-field and a passable center. Nava and Carp are OK back-ups for the 1st 9 games. Victorinio, who by the way has looked terrible so far at the plate, can easily play center if something happens during a game with Ellsbury. Nava is OK in left and passable for a game in right. Let Sweeney join the Yanks also!

I'm not so sure about that, but what if Victorino or Ellsbury is unavailable for a week? Not having Sweeney means having only one viable RF on the roster, Victorino, and I'm not sure that is wise.

Bradley is competing with Carp, Nava, maybe Gomez, Lavarnway... maybe an extra pitcher. Some might think having Bradley in Boston to start the year means you don't need Sweeney or Maier, since Bradley has range and an arm, so you could have Bradley, Nava, Carp. I'd be a lot more comfortable having Bradley in Boston until Ortiz gets back if we knew that Maier or Sweeney would agree to stay in Pawtucket. Bradley in Boston mean either Nava in AAA, or losing two of Sweeney, Maier and Carp as potential backups, and then a third person goes when Ortiz comes back. Right?

Yes, a "severe" left wrist strain on March 15. I don't think he's going to be ready to start the season.

I heard on another forum today that Owens struck out 13 out of 15 batters today. Is that true?

Lavarnway, Carter and De La Torre sent down. 35 remain in camp, including Kalish.
Of the remaining 35, 31 are from the 40-man roster (of which four - Ortiz, Drew, Morales and Breslow are expected to start the year on the DL), one is on the 60-day disabled list (Kalish) and three are non-roster invitees (Maier, Sweeney, JBJ).
Effectively, there are five more cuts to come. (Bard vs. Mortensen, Holt vs. Ciriaco, Maier/Sweeney/JBJ/Gomez/Carp for two spots)

I love the video added to the prospect previews! That being said, it impressed me to see how quickly Brian Johnson works. It looks like is maybe 13 seconds max between pitches. I think with his type of stuff it is essential for him to work quickly like that and he could be a really interesting name to keep an eye on. I would like to see him make it to AA fairly quickly to get a feel for how he produces with a higher level defense behind him.

Am I right that Bard would have to spend about 80 days in the minors to affect his FA clock?

Don't sleep on Anthony Ranaudo ... people have been writing him off too much. He's still talented.

Holt and Gomez sent out, based on internet reports. Three more cuts to come (Bard, Maier, Sweeney/JBJ).

Anthony Ranaudo (AA game) - 4.1IP, 0H, 7K, one ball hit out of infield Seriously?!...Wow... not the Ranaudo I saw last year. I spoke with someone at a Seadogs game last year that said he was associated with the Red Sox. This would have been in the late May time period and he said that Ranaudo had grown another inch to 6' 8" and this was causing him some control difficulties. He also said that Ranaudo had upped his velo. to 97...something I never saw even on the fast Portland gun. He was then mostly 91-92 and all over the place...mainly high.

Juan Nieves said Bard was sent to AA to make the point that he's not just a few good outings away.
OUCH
