This is one of those times where I wonder if there's a slight disconnect between field management and front office. Not in a 2012 kind of way where the two are on completely different pages regarding how to run a team, but more like an Izzy Alcantara situation, where Duquette viewed him as worthy of a roster spot, but Williams simply had no use for him.

Eh, without a true DH, that fourth bench spot becomes a bit superfluous no matter who it is. They can mix him in a match-ups dictate. I'm just not sure what those are. If you're keeping JBJ, there isn't much of a point in keeping Sweeney either.

I offer full contact mea culpa on this one. No way I thought, short of an injury to Ellsbury or Victorino, Bradley would be on the Sox on opening day. He faced a dearth of major league pitching during the spring, which was a woefully small sample overall as it is. I hope for the best. It is definitely a bold move.

Gomez DFA'd, JBJ added to the 25- and 40-man rosters.

I was thinking it might be Butler, Gomez seems more likely to be picked up Gomez might get claimed, but he's also much less important to the Red Sox than Butler. Between Napoli, Nava, Carp, and Mark Hamilton, there's a good bit of first base depth in the system. Meanwhile, Dan Butler is probably the guy who gets called up if Ross or Saltalamacchia suffer an injury at least in the near future (Lavarnway is not good enough defensively to be the only backup catcher and also needs to show a pulse at the plate, Vazquez needs more development time).

It seems pretty clear that the last bench spot could have gone in a number of directions, without having a real significant impact on our team layout. With JBJ as a starter, Nava/Gomes will share one spot, along with a C on the bench, and Ciriaco. Like Chris said, Sweeney wouldn't have made much sense either, since his value on defense and being left handed are completely replaced and improved by JBJ. I guess with Napoli's questionable health and Nava's inexperience, they felt they might as well give it to a guy who can play a decent 1B, who happens to hit left-handed with some pop.
As for Gomez, no loss there. Even if his bat could have played in the MLB in some situations, he hits from the wrong side of the plate and plays worse defense than Napoli and Carp.

With all the talk out there about Bradley making the roster there has been little said about Iglesias.
Concussions, as well as Drew brothers, can be tricky and lead to extended stays on the disabled list. Any thought that Iglesias may play well enough to take the starting role from Drew before he gets back? What if Iglesias is hitting .350 (may be a stretch) at the end of April while playing Ozzie Smith level defense? Do they send HIM down? This seems like a potentially far more interesting plot line IF Drew is out for an extended period of time (likely - sooner or later).
I know he isn't the shiny new toy, but with all the talk of Adrelton Simmons this off-season I think it is warranted that we give a little more love to Iglesias. If it wasn't for the Red Sox rushing his development then he may be looking like the superior prospect (although he doesn't have Simmons' speed) as they both have average-to-plus bat speed, below average plate discipline, little power and great gloves (and don't forget that Iglesias is younger than Simmons).
Just want to show Iglesias a little love here (albeit with a strong dose of optimism).

If Iglesias is hitting .350, he's starting in the All-Star game. If he's hitting north of .260, he's going to be tough to get out of the lineup. Definitely, an interesting follow. Because, we could really use another lh bat. Hope Drew gets healthy. I wouldn't label him another JD. He had a horrific ankle injury and a concussion. Not much you can do about either. His hammy wasn't a little tight.

Simmons' major and minor league hitting has been head and shoulders above that of Iglesias. Both have "little power"? Simmons had 35 doubles and six triples in 2011. It's to remember that Iglesias' solidly mediocre offensive Spring is a great development, and could signal real progress, but let's not get carried away.
