Don't love this for Milwaukee, even though it's where Moose wanted to be, and he's well-liked there. Forces Shaw back to second base, at least until Hiura is up, and Moose was pretty mediocre for the Brewers last year. It'd have taken a multi-year commitment, but getting Marwin Gonzalez would have been a much better fit and had a similar AAV -- he plays a solid second base where you have a need at the moment, and can shift all around the field. Milwaukee could have used him significantly at SS and LF, while Shaw would've remained playing a more natural position.

As someone pointed out on Twitter (and I can't find now), beyond the other stuff with the market right now, it's particularly tough for third basemen because they're well sorted right now. The good teams have good third basemen, and the bad teams are actively trying to lose because the CBA is moist garbage, so they aren't even going to take a decent second-tier guy on a bumper contract and try to trade him at midseason.

But what about if all their other prospects come up and are good. Then they'll only have (checks note) way over a hundred million a year to resign them all!

I really like this move by the Padres. With now being the only major sports team in town, and their (relatively) new stadium, you wouldn't be surprised if ownership just sat back and let the money roll in. They're at least trying to stay competitive, which is of course good for the game.
But now that Manny's deal is done, now MLB ownership needs to resolve, uh, you know... that the other of the league's stars without a team finds somewhere to play.

Once Harper signs the Sox should offer Mookie the same deal plus 10% more money. Hard to pass up 10 years $350-$360 million guaranteed.

I feel bad for the infielders in the NL West. Which ones will he step on? Which ones will he take the knees out?

I feel bad for the infielders in the NL West. Which ones will he step on? Which ones will he take the knees out? He's literally as far away from Boston as he can get, and on a team that they probably play the least the next 10 years. My off season wish list is now fulfilled.

Obviously winning is far from the most important thing for him. I hope no one remembers him.

Looks like Manny will be able to pay next month's rent after all. Does this mean the player strike is off?

Obviously winning is far from the most important thing for him. I hope no one remembers him. He's already perceived as lazy now. The NYY/LAD/PHI media would have eaten him alive and would be steering the fans towards resenting as soon as they could. Instead he goes to the team with the lowest expectations in baseball, in a great climate, where he can slack when the team is having a bad year. Sounds like a dream scenario for him at this point. As soon as I heard SD was talking to him I was like "yup, he's going there".

Away from the Machado news, RIP to Don Newcombe. First ever Cy Young Award winner, and first ever pitcher to win Rookie of the Year.

Looks like Manny will be able to pay next month's rent after all. Does this mean the player strike is off? Tony Clark and Manfred have been bashing each other for days now. Players are still ticked off. Wainwright even suggested a strike midseason (not going to happen), but it still shows a discontent between both sides. Work stoppage is coming, who knows about a strike? Hopefully it doesn't come. Good thing the CBA expires in the off-season, at least that'll give them time to at least rip each other's faces off and then clean up the mess after.

Per Forbes the Padres had revenue of 266 million, 102 million on players, made income of 26 million. They've now locked up two players for almost 50 million a year for the next 7 years. They better hope he really increases revenue or the question is how long till they eat a ton of that deal to trade him?
I'm kinda excited to see the little boy teams swimming in the deep end, yet I know how this ends.

Dont like him, but happy for him. Happy for the Padres. Happy for Baseball. I don't get all the snark here, does everything have to have some kind of 21st century trope ?
This is what players with his talent and age deserve. Glad it happened

I know some wanted Machado as the villain to the nyfy to enhance the rivalry and create interest. I am happy he will be in San Diego; and that Harper also seems likely to stay in the NL. 10/300M is too much.

He deserves to have his career ended, so he doesn't end any more careers more than he deserves $300 million. Other than female abusers, he's the biggest piece of s*** in baseball.

I said I didn't like him, and what you posted isn't untrue, but that is a totally different point than saying the snark is tiresome or the fact that he got a contract that is supposed to be handed out to a player of his caliber. they aren't mutually exclusive things.
