It was gonna happen at some point. Their three best relievers all coughed it up. Meh...what’re you gonna do? Let’s just hope the offense picks them up rn and Walden walks away with yet another win by shutting them down in his second inning. Speaking of another regression that I talked about which the board didn't like....the bullpen. It’s less about “not liking” (for me at least) than it is thoughtful, thorough consideration of the data. Workman, for example, pitching backwards has a new baseline. We don’t yet know what that is. But the data are fairly consistent with the results. That’s not regression to the mean, really, to be finicky with terms, though I guess you could call it “regression to career norm.” But some guys actually *change.* you’ve got to allow for that, too. I mean, look at Barnes over the years. Barnes seeing his LOB drop from 98 to 85-90%, that’s regression. But if you wanna regress that, regress his HR/FB rate, too. Same with Walden (who bounced back nicely, actually). Results match predictions...so it’s not a case of regression to the mean, something *statistically* apparent. It’s based on your confidence level and perception, which is fine...but that’ll get pushback here. I mean, Brasier was due to “regress” because the data said he wasn’t very good, even if the results looked pretty. He did, butnow his command looks improved and maybe he’s back on track. They’re gonna have crappy games now and then (Hembree just now 🤣🤣🤣). But that’s baseball, not necessarily anything more. The sky is not always falling.

Hembree went from striking out a batter with his fastball, to throwing a curve that got hit for a homerun. Is Leon the great pitch caller I've been told about?

His breaking stuff this year has been shelled, both results-wise and statistical expectation. But his FB has been tremendous. He needs to start burying that ish out of the zone.

Wasted a couple to start, but that’s the up-down Hembree needs. Keep the breaking stuff low and/or off the plate.

Chavis at 424ft tonight. This would have been a stinker to lose giving up two late leads.

Nice Hembree bounceback. Walden too. ‘Pen bent but didn’t break. That was a nice win.
Mookie, please get hot ASAP. Rafi, do your thing. The legend of Aaron Ju...er, Michael Chavis grows daily.

Hembree was a pleasant surprise tonight He needs to bring back the change or go SF to keep working eye levels. Or really bury the CB/SL, which just doesn’t seem likely. Don’t get many GB with a high 4FB/SL combo. He needs something to get worm-burners. I thought he could use the CB like that (see Barnes, Matthew), but it’s just not happening. His FB has plus velo and plus spin. It’s a very good pitch. A competent SF/CH would boost his GB rates and probably get more whiffs. Been waiting for him to break through but it just hasn’t clicked.

Whew. That would have been an awful game to lose. Fortunately Chavis made it go away and Hembree got a 2nd chance to get the final out and did. Four of the top Red Sox arms in the pen got nicked for a run. You wouldn't think it would happen to that many guys and being 1 out away from victory twice and blowing it isn't the greatest feeling. At least when the Sox should have lost (in the 10th I think) they didn't as Walden escaped.
It was just one of those games where after Hembree gave it up to Tellez, I had to find something else to watch. Too aggravating. When I flipped back the game had just ended and I didn't know who won. Fortunately, Chavis equals winning this year. They were 6-13 without him early on and since his call-up they're 20-10. Of course that's not all him, but it's not an empty correlation in this case.
