I'll got out on a very short and strong limb. Devers is the best hitter in baseball. That's how good he is. I'm very excited about Devers rapid development, but think it's crazy to consider as great as he's been he's still 5th on the Sox in OPS, 6th if you include Chavis as well. Now for the month of May he's be #1. Also, he's on pace to swipe 20+ bags, curious to see if that is legit or not.

Devers is like 75% of this boards child, and any time someone criticizes him we go mama bear on them. It's hilarious.

As Devers and Chavis evolve into their best selves, I am hoping for a lineup of Betts, Beni, JDM, XB, Devers, Chavis, MM/Pearce, CV/Leon, JBJ. Right now, with all cylinders firing, even with some sputtering, it would be the most relentless, fearsome and balanced iteration of the Sox offense. Lucky pitching staff. Lucky fans.

HI folks, been a while- busy with Bruins and work. Decided to replay Weber’s start to scout his stuff after seeing the stellar results. Quite ironic to have him essentially replace Eovaldi who had arguably the best Sox righty stuff since Pedro last year. Unfortunately- I’d love to be wrong here- while his sinker showed nice cut and for the most part he commanded well, I saw lot’s of mistakes- curves he couldn’t break off and pitches with nothing catching the middle of the plate which the bat challenged Jay’s either hit foul homers on, or just missed on. He’d get punished with a better team or command errors. Hopefully more repetition will tighten his command and curve and change this picture. By comparison, I recall an early Derek Lowe appearance (granted he had a much higher pedigree coming out of the minors) where he sat only mid 80’s, but boy was that movement explosive.
Good article in “FiveThirtyEight” (as you may recall Nate Silver started out in sabermetrics) titled “MLB curves and sliders have gotten alarmingly nasty,” about pitchers such as Trevor Bauer and Matt Boyd training at Driveline Baseball and Dynamic Velocity. They use tech to capture their spin rate and movement and accordingly make grip/mechanics changes to optimize their “pitch design.” (Love it when a new product has a monicker concocted to justify the costs)

All this arguing over semantics. For the time being Devers is better than Vlad Guerrero Jr. Whatever gap there is should dissipate sooner than later as Jr has an 80 hit tool. The only question I have re: Jr is will his weight balloon up and affect his abilities somewhat? There was that concern a bit with Devers but he's done a good job staying in shape. I do hope that soon Devers winds up in the 3 spot between Betts and JDM again and that Cora sticks with that this time around. I gotta say that was one strange looking lineup Cora rolled out there today, but if everybody hits then I guess the order doesn't matter much. I'd also say the Sox are having great luck with pitchers whose last name begins with W. So now we're looking at Workman, Walden, and Weber.I don't anticipate that Weber will continue to confound. His stuff isn't overly impressive but the way that ball was moving was. He has done absolutely nothing to deserve to be demoted when some of the pitchers start coming off the DL. Guess we'll see if he can continue to be effective. That was a big lift by him, giving the Sox six quality innings. The Red Sox think you're on to something....they just signed right-handed pitcher Konner Wade.
