Is Betts a little late on fastballs this season? Seems to not turn on them much.

And introducing our other gas can, garbage man reliever. The only reason why Brewer might not be gone is because he has options. He isn't pitching like a guy that deserves a roster spot either.

Only 7 more to tie the game.

Two good things in this game...Devers and JBJ. At least there's that

This was a lotta’ve ugh just to check in on. Just one of those games that none of us would sweat...if they didn’t completely tank the first 3 weeks of the season.
Sigh.

Getting to 4 games above .500 is proving a lot more difficult than you'd imagine.
E-Rod was lousy again. I was hoping he'd take a step forward this year. Thus far that doesn't seem to be the case when you stare at his 5.5 ERA. The offense didn't hit with runners on again. On the good side, Devers is hitting HRs with more regularity, Moreland is closing in on his HR total from all of last year, and JBJ's bat might finally be awaking.
As far as the pen goes, it gets harder and harder to justify "white flag" Thornburg's existence on the roster. In lieu of better alternatives, they're kind of stuck waiting on him for the time being, but between Thornburg and Brewer - those are two pitchers that are easy to part with (DFA Thornburg and send down Brewer) once Johnson and Eovaldi are back.

Entering the game, he has a 2.97 FIP and a 3.55 xFIP. He's striking out more batters, giving up less walks and getting more groundballs than ever before. Inflated BABIP and LOB% are f****ing his numbers but those ones usually regress to the mean. In fact he's taking a step forward this year, you're just looking at the wrong numbers

On May 14th (the first game at Colorado), Devers had a OPS that topped out at .870. His OPS is at .808 now. Has dropped 62 points in less than a week. Aaaaaaand back up to .834. Now .862. That was a quick recovery!

In fact he's taking a step forward this year, you're just looking at the wrong numbers Perhaps so, but at some point the guy has to put together consistent results. Having a FIP of 2.97 is really nice, but having a real ERA of 5.43 kind of sucks. I'm not stat-ignorant enough not to know that his ERA should head in the direction of his FIP at some point, but man that's a huge disparity, like really huge. At some point he has to do a better job of stranding those runners, making the big pitch when he needs it. Hopefully sooner than later.

Addison Reed was released by the Twins. Does he have anything left? He can’t be worse than Thornburg can he?

Addison Reed was released by the Twins. Does he have anything left? He can’t be worse than Thornburg can he? His velocity was way down from years prior. Averaging 89 mph this year with the fastball. That being said, sign him to a minor league deal. Can't hurt.

Aaaaaaand back up to .834. Now .862. That was a quick recovery! Keep track of it. Not sure what the medium lies this year. Last year it was in the low .700s with the OPS. This is mainly a BABIP driven thing here. His BABIP is in the .350's right now. His ISO is down from a year ago, but his K rate is down and walk rate is up. So I'm not sure if I like this hitting of Devers more.

He's had negative luck on his batted balls. His BA is .006 higher than expected, but his SA is .027 lower. He came into today with a .360 wOBA but .367 xWOBA (adjusting for MLB differential).
Those numbers has been trending steadily upwards, as he's .406 xwOBA / .397 wOBA since April 15. Again, that's not including last night.
He's slugging .651 starting May 10.

At least there is clarity about Thornburg's need to go - joining already existing clarity that Nunez needs to go, too. Can't afford two dead end roster spots. The problem with letting Thornburg go is that DD would have to eat crow to do so. Just as Cora would have to eat crow to put Mookie back at leadoff.
To be fair, most people have a hard time owning up to mistakes.

Devers and Mookie both have a spurt of HRs coming their way soon At least Devers is trying to prove me right!
